- Giorgetta, a subscriber, sent me a rare MRE from Italy. It includes breakfast, lunch, and supper all boxed together. Fruit candies for breakfast, tuna, peas, and tomatoes for lunch, and mackerel and soup for supper. Join me as we see how they taste.

The ones we traded for when we were in Iraq had small bottles of booze in them ( part of the reason we traded ) we also had an Italian base near by that we managed to sneak over to for a few meals ( and drinks not to mention the Italian women there ) best pizza I think I've ever had . Thanks for the video and the memories.

Oh those booze bottles were cordiale, a raspberry liquor developed by the italian military pharmaceutical institute during ww1 to keep the soldiers warm, because the frontline was on the alps, unfortunately in 2014 they replaced it with the cereal bars seen in the video
My wife and I went to a rummage sale at the beginning of summer. I got a case of US MRE's. The gentleman I got them from is a Vegetarian. And all the MRE's were Beef Brisket with Au gratin potatoes, Chocolate Muffin, Vegetable Crackers, Jalapeño Cheese spread, spray dried coffee, Vanilla Dairy Shake, Lemon Lime drink mix. I got the case for $10.00. When we got home my two sons and I tried one and they were still good. Needless to say when we went Bow hunting on our yearly trip to Southern Ohio we had them for lunch each day. One of our local military surplus stores always has the humanitarian rations for sale along with Supaco MRE's. Great video today. I always enjoy the memories you share from your time serving. During my younger years I ate Mac and cheese with tuna and peas for a budget meal and ate so much of it, it became a comfort food that I still enjoy for a quick no hassle lunch or dinner.

Italian rations are so hard to get, even for us right next to the EU.
The one thing I think you missed was squirting a generous amount of the sweetened condensed milk into the fruit cocktail and mixing it in.
That makes a really great dessert.
As a kid, it was a favourite dessert in our house, fruit cocktail with evaporated milk, which is very similar to condensed milk, just not as thick.
The mackerel looked really good. Your cat really thought so too 😂, but you're right about being better in a tomato sauce of some kind.
The Orifo drinks are really good. They are in many European rations, and they even show up in British rations, too.
The whole ration looked ok. One day, hopefully, I'll get my hands on one to try.

I'm a Canadian veteran however I'm also from an Italian family and on my first tour is with the Italian military what you're supposed to do with the biscuits is dip them in the coffee and breakfast is very light in Italy normally just bread and coffee.

Love Miss Piggy. I was in the Army in the 80's and will agree, those sleeping bag caps are very nice, and I still have a pair of those mittens, I wear them when I snowblow in the winter. Great video!

Mediterranean breakfast is exclusively composed of sweet things. Nutritional experts say that carbohydrates and sugars are the best meal in the morning because you need a lot of immediately usable energy, while proteins are better in the evening. In Italy we have milk, coffee or cappuccino, some biscuits or pastry, or toasted bread with fruit jam or honey on top, and sometimes fresh fruit or fruit juice.
Jelly candies are usually not part of a breakfast. I guess they are there as a substitute for jam. Concentrated milk, I assume, is supposed to be diluted in hot water and mixed with coffee to get caffelatte (coffee + milk beverage). Or you can put a small quantity in tea or in coffee, I guess. Or even drink it by itself, in case you don't like coffee and prefer to drink milk in the morning instead.
About the vitamin tablets, my best guess is that you actually just eat them.
Not in my part of the Mediterranean... Maybe it's best to just say "Italian breakfast is exclusively sweet" instead of laying claim to the entire Mediterranean. Rome has fallen, my friend.
Edit: Also, if it really were the "best meal in the morning" they wouldn't have to include vitamins with the MRE to make up for all the JUNK FOOD you had for breakfast.
Hey Me Ancient, hey Ace. Great video, really informative too. I was surprised by how light the entire days MRE was. It just looked like it was one big snack, instead of something to keep you going in the field. Maybe it's more substantial than it appears, but, the Italians must eat light meals in their military, I guess. I think Miss Piggy was the real winner with the condensed milk. Never imagined milk packaged that way. Keep the stories of your military adventures coming! Looking forward to the next one guys, God bless.

I’m the child of an Italian mama here in Canada and the tube of sweet milk is for squeezing on your crackers for breakfast ❤ Also Italians eat their biggest meal at lunch so it is always huge…I’m jealous of this ration but it is easy to get imported Italian items here though

Fun fact: the presence of alcohol in the Italian MRE is due to the geographic conformation of the Italian peninsula. Italy is surrounded on three sides by the Mediterranean Sea, leaving just the northern mountainous regions for potential enemies to invade; that's why boozes were considered necessaries for soldiers, because they had to warm them up in case of mountain fights

That's a looooong way from the k rations we has on the Italian army in the 90's! I worked briefly into the kitchens too...food was alright considering the quality of the ingredients! Great review

Do ya fry them in butter and serve with buttered toast and 2 sunny side up eggs for dipping lol.
My grandfather told me I must be part cat or with all the noise I made back then, he called me a dolphin -the way I love fish. We would eat sardines and saltines and cheddar or butter out on the lake fishing lol.
My newest grandson(just turned 2) insists on trying my sardines or kipper when I have them and he gets so disgusted and spits it back in my hand or his.
But he still asks for a bite every time. Lol
He is a tad fussy but he will try a bite of anything as long as you're eating it.
He didn't like fruits last summer or earlier this summer other than raspberries.
All of a sudden the past couple weeks hes been eating oranges and apples.
I can't wait for next summer. My strawberry beds are nice.lol

Showed up on the back porch after we moved in. Turns out she's a neighbor's cat who left home because of the addition of a new dog. They didn't get along. Anyway, her given name is Miley, but she was Miss Piggy to us 'cause she ate so much when she first showed up. TFW!
This was a really fun one, from Italy. The best thing about this ration was the little stove, and the 3 toothbrushes and toothpaste. That breakfast was bloody terrible. I've heard that Italians just like something sweet and some coffee for breakfast, a pastry or biscotti or something. Give me a huge bowl of oatmeal with fruit and milk, and a big omelette any day, like those hash brown and scrambled eggs US MRE's, what bloody beauties. You can work all day on that. I don't know how their troops can work until Midday on those lollies and a small chocolate. Nice pictures of you when you were a young fella, you look as American as apple pie. That is really cool you've got the ensign from the USS El paso. That is bloody pitiful that the insulated covers weren't provided by the corps, but I totally agree with you about that whinger, ended up being at least $10 cheaper than him and he still turned into a howler monkey 🙊🙊
I live in an airforce town and the amount of free stuff I’ve gotten from airmen going on a long deployment or getting restationed is crazy. For a lot of the stuff they’d rather rebuy it than go through the hassle of packing it and unpacking it. Some of the best guys you’ll ever meet.

I really wish that I could meet y’all one day and go fishing. I don’t get to go fishing much anymore because I only ever went with my dad and he works a lot and when he’s not working he’s busy doing something else. I went through basic training during winter at fort Leonard Wood Missouri. We had similar mittens, but they had a separate trigger finger for firing our weapon.

Italian breakfast is usually espresso/cappuccino with a roll/bread.
Lunch is a big meal.
Dinner is just picking at a little food/snack... cheese and fruit, slice of bread and salami (cured meats).

Shirley, I really liked the Spanish one with squid in its own ink, myself. Russians make some pretty good meals as well. I like the MREs of European extraction, maybe just because they are different from ours. TFW!

I really love watching these videos every time you upload. One thing though is I wish I had some MREs. I guess eBay would be a good start to look for them as long as they are not spoiled. Haven't had one since my dad left the National Guard around 2011. I remember him bringing home a box full of them from time to time. I think they were close to expired or whatever it is where the National Guard had to get rid of them. I guess they just gave them to the people there to get rid the of old stock.
If stored properly, they can last quite a while. I do know you can pick them up on eBay and Amazon. TFW!
There is several online stores for them and they are even on Amazon. If you plan on it make sure they are full unopened cases.

I had the same ration in Iraq 2004. We begged the Portuguese soldiers for their MRE’s and they gave us those, but they were packaged individually not as a 24hr ration. They were very sweet, coffee heavy as I remember. I must have been given a breakfast meal.

First of all I wanted to say hello, and as an Italian to give you some explanation.
for breakfast: it is true we prefer it sweet, but strange that we put jelly candy instead of jam. We usually eat them when we need something sweet during the day not for breakfast.
Enervit energy tablets, they should be eaten as they are, no water, hot or cold; remember tangy lemon or blackberry taste.
And strange that there is no canned meat in the Italian MRE either.
Love your videos. I was a CT who went through school in Pensacola. We had Marines in our classes. Did you go thru Corry Field? Also, I got to visit the first Iwo Jima, LPH-2 when it came thru Hong Kong where my family lived for several years. Again, great job and very positive style.
No way!!! Yes, I went to school at Cory Field. I was a CT as well. Our MOS was Manual Morse Intercept Operator. They don't even have the MOS anymore.......When were you in and what branch Stephen? TFW
@MeAncient cool. I graduated from T Branch school in March of 1971. The Navy also dropped the CT rate but has brought it back. I had learned Morse in the cub scouts and did pretty well in that part of the school. The "Big room" was pretty easy but they switched me to T Branch the final 10 weeks. Then on to Guam.

Italians generally drink milky coffee with breakfast. Like a caffe latte. Black coffee first up in the morning is considered bad for the digestion. So the condensed milk is for coffee for a milky coffee.
For breakfast they give the sweet biscuit, lunch and dinner are salty biscuit.
Still have my P38 from my Army days back in the 70s. Never heard them called John Waynes before Jarhead.
Italian diet, but the cat approves :D
