Back in the 60's there was a product, the name was something like Fizzy Pop. They were large tables that you dropped into a glass of water that then would start bubbling and turned your glass of water into a flavored drink. They came in different flavors and no need to stir. This would be a good substitute for the powdered drink packs in the MRE's.

I've had those Jack Link steaks bars and they're normally soft. Not sure what happened with yours.

If your a foreigner spread your vegemite very,very thin or you will hate it. As an aussie,we lick it off the spoon as a lolly,its what makes us great fighters.

Note that vegemite was put in USMC rations during WWII in the pacific theatre to increase salt intake

When I was on a school exchange trip to France in the 70's, it was quite normal to have horse steaks in the school canteen, and I ate a few. It's just another sort of meat. We don't eat horse in the UK though.

Yeah that was what I thought on exercise with yanks we were shocked that they left all their rubbish when they left the position. They can't do that in the Australian Army because we take our rubbish with us. That is why I wasn't surprised you didn't know what the rubber bands are for, they are to close the bag with your rubbish in it so gunk doesn't get all over your gear when you put it back in your pack.

The tea is the Mongolian version if an electrolyte drink. Those fatty tasting chewy bits are bits of tendon from the meat.

Your 3 rd meal was buckwheat, Mongolia is not a very rich country especially in food aspect there main dish is horse milk and plov (rice with meat ) That's why there is no variety

The intersection of my two fascinations: MREs and Russia. Why? I don’t know, but I’ve watched this twice.

Holy smokes. Finally a MRE drink tablet that is worse at dissolving than the US MRE drink powder. Wooohooo! USA USA USA USA USA!

The candles included in many foreign MREs may seem strange, but they are intended to be lit as a light source to allow you to read or write letters during down time. Getting letters from home and being able to send your own written letters is HUGE for morale and considered extremely important for a soldier's well being.

Super interesting MRE, I’ve never seen one of those before. Looks very similar to a Russian MRE and I do think you are absolutely right, menu fatigue would set in super early as it’s all the same stuff. That was an interesting one, I couldn’t wait to see your reaction to the sea buckthorn because it actually grows here in the Uk and I’ve tried it - it must be the sourest berry I’ve ever tasted but it’s supposed to be very good for you!
