  • Join me for some dehydrated pork, apples, cheese n crackers, and all the rest in my trip down memory lane. I bought a whole case of 1982 MREs. Just like I had when I was active duty from '80 to ''84. What a treat!

I was about 15 in 1978. My aunt's first husband was in the Army and he brought me a C ration when he visited on leave. I remember the thrill of opening it and eating it. I was a military enthusiast back then and loved getting the C-ration. Unfortunately, I was not able to enlist when older due to health related disqualifications. Anyways watching your program evokes these memories. Good to hear you praying over your meals as well. Robert

I was in high school 1971-1975, and had my first C-rats in the Civil Air Patrol. I spent 1976-1980 in the Airforce, and got to eat C-rats again. From 1980-1986 I was in the Navy my second hitch, and again had C-rats during a couple training days. I didn't eat an MRE until much later, as a civilian IT guy in the late 1990s. 😊

@MeAncient I met a guy who asked me “have you ever had green eggs and ham?” I thought he was being funny until he told me that his dad stockpiled C rations when he was a kid. Guy ended up serving during the Cold War, he was a fire control guy. He said he had wanted to be a firefighter, so he was excited until he learned what “fire control” actually meant.

My dad was a second generation Ukrainian farmer from northeastern Montana. He went to the army in ‘53 and told me he’d never eaten so well in his whole life! He’d poke a small hole in the c ration canister and heat it up on his half track engine. He’s gone to be with the Lord now but I sure miss that guy! Thanks for everything you did for me dad! Love you!😢❤

Dana, that's a great story. You have an interesting heritage. My grandparents (maternal) came from Holland in the 1910s and spoke broken English at best. My grandfather never entered the military as he was listed as 'farm help' and they needed him more on farms working than in the war. Both of them are with the Lord now and I can't wait to see them again. TFW!

I was in the USN 80-86. In 1983 my ship was on a deployment, and spent a week tied up in Mombasa, Kenya. The Seamen's Mission there, catering to civilian and Navy sailors, had a big board with many visiting ship's plaques. One was the HMS Sheffield. We all hoisted our beers in memory of those brave British sailors on the Royal Navy ships that were lost.

The dehydrated pork patty was one of my favorites. When we opened up a box I'd let it sit for a bit as like you mentioned a lot of folks don't like it. I would reconstitute it, but I did like a bit of crunch so I didn't go all the way. Plus it had cheese, which I always preferred over the peanut butter. And coco powder, which I would add the creamer too and pour in a bit of water, stir, and have chocolate pudding for extra desert. I was a tanker, so we just heated things up on the exhaust grill. Is there an omelet with ham meal in there? That was another one I liked, that most folks didn't. Breakfast of champions!

They've been really sharp, but, edible. That pork patty is something that I've never seen. I wonder what it would be like, if you didn't add any water to it? I am nearly out of stories of my own. In most of the other videos on my channel, I tell stories of my time during active duty. Thank you for your kind comments. The cheese actually had some dark spots mixed in unlike any other of that type that I've seen opening all the MREs in the past. It was a little 'off' from most of the other old cheese, which just gets sharper as it ages. That cheese wasn't right, as they say. TFW!

Incredible looking at those brand new shiny MRE packages when you opened the box. This one has been stored well. I wasn't surprised that any of the vacuum packed items were still good. The freeze dried pork was always good. What I was surprised about was the ketchup or "catsup" as they called it. It was NEVER good. Always turned into a brick.
There was another menu that had freeze dried hamburger meat, and there is also a freeze dried potato patty (like a hash brown). And the freeze dried fruit. Those were always good as long as the seal was intact.
