2020 Russian Prisoner 24 Hour Ration Review Tushonka Vegetable Caviar Convict MRE Meal Taste Testing

- A very difficult to acquire package of food given to Russian suspects, convicts, and prisoners during transit or for when regular hot meals aren't feasible. Featuring a ton of hard tack, sugar, a couple tea bags, and a few halfway nourishing meat and grain kasha type items, along with a vegetable caviar - or rendered puree rather. It's some pretty delectable squash, carrot, and vegetable oil spread which really is the star of the show, along with that beef tushonka.
Truly a fascinating ration that you don't get to see every day.

Steve commiting crimes in Russia so he can get a taste of the Tushanka.
The prison staff had had enough of his chatter, plus he had eaten everything even the borstch.
RIP to all those who would have followed in Steve's footsteps but never made it out
The lengths Steve will go to for a ration. I mean, just imagine going all the way to Russia, committing a crime, turning yourself in, processing into a prison, establishing dominance among the other prisoners, digging a tunnel, breaking out and going on the lamb, then paying off a boat captain to obtain passage back to the states...
...just to get lunch.
Mad respect, Steve. Mad respect.
Why do you think there's such a long time in between his videos sometimes? He's ultra committed 🤣

In 1993 I worked as a labourer on a construction site in Russia for a month and the tea was literally twigs from a tea bush, no leaves at all, and even that tea dust looks like a improvement. The only saving grace was the enormous sack of sugar crystals we had, to dump into the tea for energy. As the hotel food provided was borscht twice a day, those sugar crystals provided most of our calories.
Russian Borscht doesn't have cream? Or just the "gulag" version?

Alot of people would take a couple bites, make a remark or two, and then throw it away.
That lonely pile of hardtack won't eat itself!
I'm so surprised he ate all this. None of it looked like I would eat it if I had a choice. I kept expecting him to say "now that smells like a can of cat food" but then he takes a bite 😅
I was in jail and one of the inmates was a Russo-Ukrainian guy who had all the classic prison tats, he showed how Russian prison tea was really used: sticking like 50 of those tea packets in a small container with hot water for an ultra-concentrated version that felt like drinking 20 redbulls at the same time
It's called chifir.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chifir
Chifir' (чифирь) - ultra concentrated Soviet prison tea
Have you ever heard the term “samovar”? This is a device for making Russian tea. A heating source below, a kettle above. And at the top there is a teapot with extremely strong tea extract. You dilute the tea extract with the hot water to make drinkable tea. The extremely concentrated tea extract has nothing to do with prison, but is the completely normal way Russians enjoy tea. The fact that there are people who drink the tea extract pure... well, everyone as they wish.
@@giostisskylasin Poland we don't have samovars but prisoners still make the tea the same way. They call it "czaj" and it's made as described by the original commenter. It's supposed to have some narcotic effects (or at least give you a lot of energy) but I don't know if it's true.
It is somewhat true as this ultra-highly concentrated tea has a lot of caffeine - so it gives prisoners a bump in productiviti and it's a measure to survive long and cold nights. But it's also a drink that is really damaging on your teeth and bad for your overall health@@ziemowitzderski1071
Been watching Steve for years. What I like about Steve is that he doesn't feel pressured to release videos every day or week. He does his thing, puts up videos when he feels like it, and we all benefit. He has the secret to longevity that many content creators haven't gotten yet, and they end up burning out and vanishing.
I love him for this. He stays true to himself and his work after all these years. No flash, no gimmicks no fucking moronic thumbnails of himself pointing at things with a clown expression. Absolute A1 informative content delivered with easy going class.
the secret is botulism.
If you'd watched before you'd know he used to post regularly but doesn't so much now.
I would think he would need to spread a lot of mulch and put tons of plants in the ground so he could earn enough money to purchase some of these gems. Military ration collecting is not an inexpensive hobby.
Some of these rations Takes him years and thousands of dollars to get his hands on.
I like how Steve treats this with as much respect as any other ration.
I'm VERY curious how "Russian-prisoner-grade" pork pate compares, taste and quality wise, to stuff that's easily available in the US like Potted Meat Food Product, or those little cans of deviled ham in the paper wrapper.
Or the cat food on isle 6?😂😂@@TheB3e3

Steve I was excited to see millet in this ration. My wife (native Russian) has been feeding me millet for years but always at breakfast. She says farmers would usually eat it in the morning before heading out to work due to how calorie dense it is. I typically eat mine stirred up with a bit of sugar as well. Definitely my favorite Russian breakfast food.
Steve may be the most "glass half-full, not empty" person to ever exist. Only he could find the brightsides of what could barely pass as effort given for this ration lol. Never change Steve.
raised in the US by euro immigrants - these rations actually look awesome 😭
@@XxpurexrussianxXpackaging is absolutely garbage, but it doesn’t look that bad, a decent main, beverage and vegetables.

Another brilliant video.Just to add that transporting convicts from Moscow to Siberia is normally by prison train which takes 45 hours-a bit more than all day.If they are transported by road for any reason,it takes six days.
Really unique and fascinating ration. Only Steve could "start the day off right" with a meal of hardtack and cat food.
Hahaha you thought that too. You can bet western cat food is better quality meat cuts then whatever they ground up into "meat"
There is a chance Steve just ate people.
And baby food (orange paste in the corner of tray)
@@canadiansovietI know it looks bland at best, but that stuff is AWESOME. eggplant-based is 10/10
Chicken pate is SO good, especially when made with liver. Highly recommend with flowery teas. Calling it cat food is doing it a disservice. Though for sure the one he had was very low quality
It’s better than the food prisoners get in the states. That would be a high priced commissary item.

For a Russian convict MRE, it's better than I figured it would be. Though it's also clear there's a fair bit of a 'we don't really want to give you anything but we still will' feel to it.

Steve is truly blessing us this month.
There's something almost artistic about the way Steve presents all of these MREs and I really liked how he committed to using the cracked cup just for that added effect... It really gives you a feeling of what it's like on your way to the gulag and the type of food you're expected to eat and how it's presented and what's the best way to make it enjoyable if you can even say that. Avid follower for many years. Keep it up!
Please note that the food and materials provided cannot be turned into a weapon to be used against guards or other inmates. Though the foil can be twisted in to a spike like shiv if you get enough meat tins and twist around tight enough.
The bag of hard tack could be used like a sock full of pennies as a makeshift sap, but authorities thought ahead and made the bag super flimsy.
I think if you give prisoners a sturdy bag they'll asphyxiate themselves/one another. But yeah a sap would work too.
Another potentially interesting detail is the low amount of very weak tea given and a very flimsy cup provided with the ration. This might be, at least in part, to prevent the convicts from using extra strong double or triple boiled tea as a low impact drug.
I commented that hard tack sock instead of sock of rocks thing somewhere else lmao. surely they would have socks?
@@poppymason-smith1051 actually I’m fairly sure they do have socks. So that hardtack in a sock might actually work. Has anyone mentioned that to Alexi Navalny yet?

I worked in a correctional facility and prisoners could make weapons out of simple Styrofoam by simply heating it and molding it into a knife or sharp object. Crazy stuff prisoners will do out of ordinary items.
In some correctional colonies of the former USSR there are museum corners with confiscated “prison weapons”. In some colonies, especially gifted self-taught people managed to assemble revolvers and single-shot pistols.
