As a Chinese, I can't make a better translation than Steve LOL But for 干粮 (gan liang), "food" or "dried food" is not an ideal translation. In Chinese, traditionally it specifically indicates Carbohydrate(most are not rice-based) food without any visible water or soup. This word is more commonly used in the northern part of China. People there eat more wheat, millet and corn flour than rice. All different kinds of Steam Bread and baked flat Bread etc. They all can be considered as typical "干粮". In modern days, carbohydrate food like bread, cockies and biscuits which were introduced from Western countries also fall into this category. And in the scenario of MRE, I guess "dried and compressed Carbohydrate food" is a better translation here, unless I misunderstand the word "food" means.
