What a fun video! Such dedication using two rations in one video, thank you sir.
Our pleasure! I'm glad you enjoyed it TFW
lol ace sneaking a bite is always funny. another fine video men, keep em coming.
Thanks, will do! He's a sneaky one. I didn't realize how much he made off with until I edited it. TFW, Jimmy.
Me Ancient's channel is growing like crazy. I watched a video this morning, at 8 AM. It's 7:45 PM now, where I live...you have over 200 new subscribers in less than 12 hours, sir. I am so happy that your channel is growing as quickly as this. Your videos are so entertaining and your stories from your service days are always amazing and entertaining. The content is also family friendly and interesting. Thank you, Me Ancient and to your son for brining us all this quality content. Keep it up, please. Cheers and bless you.
i’m hooked on these videos!!
Joey, I'm glad to hear it. TFW
Whenever a video drops, I pause what I'm doing to watch them. Thank you for your service, and keep up the good work! Also, your stories are so interesting and entertaining!
I appreciate that! My pleasure to serve, and TFW!
I absolutely love these videos so glad I found them .
Glad you like them! Welcome aboard, Eldon. TFW
I watch your sons videos both are great. Your videos make me wanna eat while I’m watching and love the stories man. Thanks for your service sir much love from Southern California
Glad you like them! My pleasure. TFW!
Omg I can totally picture Ace about 20 years older with the “cleanse the old pallet” saying 😂 Y’all are just too cute!
As Always, Thank you for your service Me Ancient! 🫡
My pleasure and I hope to be around when Ace has his wife and kids so I can see that life for him. TFW
Just got back from walking my dogs and I find a notification for your video, oh happy days. :)
That MCW is one of my favourites, I know alot of people dont like FS bars, but they are great to eat before exercise.
The cheese pretzels are pretty nice too.
They put cinnamon in everything, probably to hide the lovely shelf stable taste 😂
Hahaha you can tell an army man when he emptys his canteen cup, smells it and just decides its clean enough😂
Im not surprised that the M&Ms were still good, the candy coating keeps the chocolate good.
I think ive seen everything now! New cheese pretzels with 30yr old cheese.
The chocolate hazelnut beverage is nice, but its not thirst quenching like the fruit drinks are.
Never tried a 30yr old cherry drink, but I trust your opinion ;)
The freeze dried chicken and rice is amazing, never tried the 30yr old version though.
Loved this comparison video. :)
That 30yr old ration must have been stored in optimal conditions, its a rare find.
Yes indeed about the storage of the older MRE.....it was cool of Steve to share it with me, for sure. TFW, as always, Christine.
Thank you for another great video. I really enjoy watching you and I love to listen to ACE. Y'all are a great duo.
That you for those kind words, Sara. TFW, as always.
Nice. I'm pleasantry surprised by the 1990s MRE still being in such great condition. I guess how they are stored is key.
I think you are right about storage being the key. TFW
I laughed every time Ace slipped his hand in and snagged a combo! LOL!
I noticed how many times his hand slipped in to steal a bit when I was editing. I'm going to have to watch him more closely.....🙂 TFW
my favorite 20 minutes of the week
or 28 minutes
It just seemed like only 20 minutes, right? TFW
I should be reading my Bible, I suppose, but I'm always peaceful while watching your videos on Sunday afternoon.
Come on, man! You can do both. Do the Bible first. I didn't even upload until the afternoon. TFW
@@MeAncient I wasn't criticizing you...just talking out loud 🤣🤣🤣
Love these vids. Been w since day one. Could Ace maybe do a mashup with like the funny smells , the laughing at squeezing out items, the gagging at rancid food etc. makes me laugh! 😆
Mike, Ace is so busy, I am lucky to snag him once a week to film something. TFW
Always a great video👍 Much love❤
Tks for that, Isaiah. TFW
Love you guys. Thanks for the video
We appreciate you watching!
This is my favorite MRE yet. I like the comparison of the MRE's and also how you two both tasted the MRE's together. Awesome job!
Thanks, John. There may be more in the future. TFW!
Man I happy when I saw u uploaded a program nothing on tv I looked on here said hot damn lol ..great show fellas as usual
Richard, Thank you for those kind words and TFW
Yes! A deluxe Sunday upload…Two meals, one video. I found your commentary on the first strike bar interesting. It’s surprising that it kind of melts while chewing. I’d have been instantly put off for like you said, fear of pulling a filling out. 👍
I'm at that age and my teeth are in that condition.....TFW
In my US Navy hitch - 1980 through 1986 - I only had military rations once, during a visit to Gitmo in 1984. My ship was undergoing "Refresher Training", and a bunch of us went to the shooting range, as we were in the shipboard security and guard force, no Marines on our small ship. We also did the teargas house. We had lunch with C-rats. Probably cycling them out before issuing the new MREs. Never tried MREs until years later as a civilian. I used to order cases of the entrees only, and use them for motorcycle road/camping trips.
I liked those tan M&Ms, which have been replaced by Blue.
I think the FD Mountain House will always beat out the retort pouch stuff of the same flavor. 👍
You are right about the Mountain House beating the other meals out, for sure. Thanks for your service and TFW, Lance.
2 MREs in one video? very cool to see, nice video.
See this for another 2 MRE video..... czcams.com/video/nD8S8WtKxig/video.html
Enjoy and TFW!
Really enjoyed. Yall make a great team.
Thanks so much and TFW, Michael.
Love the comparison videos. Can't beat the freeze dried mains in the MCW's. I prefer Tasters myself too. Especially the old ones of they survive. Thanks for the video!
I agree about the freeze dried, for sure......cannot be beat! TFW
13:30 😂 Ace slowly sides his hand for some m&ms
I've had the old chicken and rice and really liked it. It is interesting that there are freeze-dried components in the new rations; the very first MREs were mostly freeze-dried to save weight, but many times the actual texture of the food was changed, making it less palatable, and it was figured out that troops still had to supply water for rehydrating the food.
It’s Ryan 👍 good video chief as always my Sunday ritual
Glad you enjoyed it, Ryan. TFW!
My grandpa was in the armed forces and he always drank taster's choice .
My dad is the only veteran who doesn't drink coffee
He tasted it once as a child and proclaimed it wasn't for him
Travis, if it works for the man, I say, "To each his own." TFW
My wife thinks I should ditch my Keurig and go to Taster's Choice. I'm not ready for that. Yet....TFW
I drink freeze dried tasters choice to this day lol few scoops of that and a scoop or 2 of hot chocolate powder and the rest is history
As always good video 👍
Tks for those kind words and TFW
Great review thanks
Thank you for those kind words and TFW
The new main looked so much better, but the old MRE sure held up well in general.
It really was remarkably well preserved. TFW
Love love love your videos. Thank you so much for this channel. You have no idea how much this all helps me. God Bless you and yours sir.
Anthony, I am happy to be a help in your life. TFW
@@MeAncient Sir, may I suggest a Patreon page with some merch added.
Dziękuję za kolejny świetny film 🤘👍🏻
My pleasure and TFW
Well done guys.
Thanks for that and TFW
These videos always make me hungry
Matthew, I know, right? TFW
Good review Me Ancient Shipmate! I agree with the Cold Weather version I would like. Watch that little hand that keeps stealing your combos!! lol Cheers, S
I noticed that hand while I edited the video. I am going to have to watch him more closely......TFW, Shannon
Chicken and Rice was in my top three from 1987-1990! Along with The beef patty and Chicken Ala king! No heater needed when you had a pot belly stove and a canteen cup!!
That 90's MRE is almost as old as I am. Those m&m's look mint for their age... and so do I for that matter 😉
Oh my...nothing like a little self confidence. TFW
captaintuttle5006 LOL when i was in they were C rations.. Ham and Lima beans 😂
Another great video, lots of good comments on comparing the two MRE's. It's surprising that the amount of volume of the two main courses, were so different. I wonder if the difference in the coffee taste, was due to the older Tasters Choice, having noticeably more crystals in the package? Lots of fun watching the comparison, looking forward to more of your stories about your tour of duty, which were missing from this one!!! Looking forward to more, God bless.
TFW and I'm happy you enjoyed it.
Nice looking meals !! My Dad served in the army driving at times to higher ranked in the Jeep !! He once told me he would heat up his meal in the engine compartment ! He would place the food close to the block where it would stay !!!!
David, that's what we did lots of times as well. TFW
My grandpa was in the Turkish marines, in cyprus peace operation and he once said the mre they gave them lasted 4-5 days even it’s a 24h mre… crazy times…
Crazy, for sure. Turkish Marines have a great reputation of being incredibly tough! TFW
That chocolate covered cookie bar looked really good especially for being 30 years old.
Luke, not bad at all. TFW
Quote: "Does cheese ever die?" Ace 2023 😂 Great vid gentlemen, thank you both.
We enjoyed filming that one, for sure. Pleasantly surprised by the older menu items. TFW
I was in the AF in the 80's 🎉😂 and had the dark brown packaging MRE's. I've never had a better Ham Slice than the one's from those meals!!! If anyone knows where to purchase some comparable ham, please drop a link! It was so tender and flavorful!
Tasters choice for instant coffee is incredibly good for sure. So is Cafe Butelo its an espresso grind super fine so a great coffee flavor
My wife thinks I should go out and buy Taster's Choice and ditch my Keurig. I'm not there yet. TFW, Travis
@MeAncient I actually use my k cup machine still however I bought a thing you can fill with regular coffee and brew in k cup machine cause I refuse to pay 6 to 12 bucks for 10 maybe 12 k cups lol
Great comparison! I think I'd go with the newer one! Thanks my friend!
Indeed, Adam....I agree. TFW
Nice review. This MREs was made for Operation Desert Storm 1991 and to the war in Afghanistan in 2020.
It was a dandy. Amazing how it was still good after all that time. That's a testament to good storage. TFW, Vlad.
When I hear the name Steve and mre I wanna say nice hiss let’s gets this out on to a tray 😅
Not that Steve, this is another one. His channel is linked now. TFW, James.
Hey James howdy that Steve is me 😆aka RUSTYSURPLUS
This isn’t a 1 to 1 comparison cuz back then there was also the Ration Gold Weather. That vintage MRE does look in excellent condition.
I wish that sometime he would show the bottom of the coffee cups to see the brand name and where it was made. 😊
Let's get this out onto two trays!
Best way to compare, for sure. TFW
Please always give Ace HALF of each item. Thanks!
Asa was grabbing everything this episode 😂
Stewart, I didn't realize it until I did the editing. He's a real thief. I'm going to have to watch him better from here on out. TFW
25:13 we always dumped as much tobasco on the (old) chicken and rice as possible. That’s why we’d save little bottles from other MREs for meals like these that didn’t have much flavor.
Great idea about saving the tobacco sauce bottles. TFW
Dip that French toast in the coffee!
Great video!
It was fun one to make. TFW, Justin
Another lovely mre selection, however no story or pictures from Beirut but not complaining..thanks Me Ancient 🙂
Glad you enjoyed it. I figured the video was a little long so I left out a story. More stories coming on future videos. TFW, Srijan!
God bless you!
May God bless you as well. TFW
I personally really like the first strike bars when I have encountered them in MRE's.
That one was top drawer! Ate it all, for sure. TFW
The chocolate cookies back then were essentially a coated dog biscuit. Very coarse. But I admit..they were good!
My grandfather was in the navy during Vietnam. I remember him talk about getting smokes in his mre's and telling me the amount of brass dropped in the ocean if someone was to able to recover it from the ocean floor. They would have one rich SOB just from scrap. I have the bottom of one the shell's from when he was on ship that he turned into a ashtray. That thing weighs probably 10lbs
The new MRE didn’t come with salt, but there may have been a little salt left over at the bottom of that bag of Combos. Pretzels always shed a little of their salt in the bag.
What a great idea! I'll try and remember that next go around. TFW!
🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼 Amen, brother!
Always! TFW
The drawback to the newer Cold Weather MRE is the need to add hot water. If you don't have access to hot water you can't eat it, your S.O.L. The older MRE doesn't need anything, you can even eat it cold, as is. Also amazing that the older MRE is 33 years old and still good. If stored proberly, in a cool basement, they last over 33 years, the perfect prepper food.
That's a good point. When we got the first generation MREs back in the early 80s, lots of the menu items were all freeze dried and would have lasted many years, I imagine. If you could get MREs new and have control of how they were stored since new, I think you could have a real shot at an MRE lasting over 30 years. TFW
yummie
I love your videos Me Ancient. What is the biggest fish you’ve ever caught? Mine is a 30 pound salmon.
I think you asked me this one the last video.....it was a shark caught in Florida....about a 5 footer. Couldn't weigh it cause the scales weren't big enough. TFW
The sweet part of the old MRE looked better, but no one can beat that freeze dried new main meal, also the beverages were better in the old one, cocoa powdered drink might be nice, but a fresh cherry would definitely by better for me too. Great video, and interesting to see how the meals evolved in a relatively short period of time.
Good point about the evolution of the MREs. TFW
I don't know if it was just my unit, but the newer meals gave us constipation and the older ones gave us bubble guts😂
I never had any problems during active duty. I guess other than boot camp. TFW
The freeze dried MRE’s are so much better tasting then most of the pouches in my opinion.
Brian, you are right, my friend. TFW
Semper Fidelis ya old Salt Dog!!
I remember the cheese spread being more soft and creamy, like peanut butter. And it wasn’t sharpe at all. I wonder if the aged that way.
I think that is what has happened. The newer MRE cheese spread is quite creamy in texture and smooth tasting, not sharp. TFW, even though it's not really you........
Love ya Me Ancient!
TFW!
Gday Me Ancient and Ace. Just a few questions - Did you ever serve with soldiers from Australia and New Zealand? Did you know they have there own Cookie named after them from WW1 called ANZAC Cookies? You can find a reciepe online for them and I reckon you should give them a go :D
And whats Creamer?
God Bless And Thanks For Your Service Me Ancient. Appreciated From An Aussie Subscriber :D
You are welcome, 'Aussie.' Interestingly enough, I just got an 24 hour Aussie MRE that will be coming up in a video soon. I have not heard about the ANZAC Cookie. I'll have to take a look....... TFW and stay tuned!
Watching now before bed 😊
Get to sleep! You've got a big day tomorrow. TFW
@@MeAncient oh thanks! Have a goodnight 😊
Are there measurement markings in those canteen cups? Or do just eyeball it? I've never been in service, so I've never held a canteen cup to know.
Eyeball, my friend. TFW
Id taught you'd know as someone in the military should know that in the winter your body overworks even more and needs more food, thats why its more food in the other mre
Exactly. TFW
Desert storm wasn’t until 1991 because I was there in the Marine Corps infantry
Kevin, passing on what I was told by the Marine who got them and sent them to me. Thank you for your service, Semper Fi, and TFW!
Was Mr. Ancient on a boat when he was in the Marines? If so, which boat and when?
14:08 welp, answered my question here. 😂
The things I’d do for that chocolate covered cookie bar!
I'd a shared it with you if you were around. TFW!
Prob should not open those old M&Ms could be worth money some day I’ve never seen an old pack like that.
Chocolate covered fudge bar was the absolute best you could get back in the day! Chocolate covered cookie bar not so much :(.
It had turned to simply sweet over the 30 + years that had gone by......no real chocolate taste and just a crunchy cookie that was sweet, but no distinct taste either. TFW
their was no full description on his channel though??
Just added it. I just added it about an hour ago. TFW
Hey Accidental howdy @RUSTYSURPLUS here Me Ancient has got me a bunch of subs and he is the best MRE tester out there.😃
Do you ever have any unwanted/ unexpected reactions from ingesting any of the MRE’s ?
Not yet, crazy lady! TFW
That old MRE was stored well usually if it's not the Tasters choice will be moldy.
That's what I thought. TFW
Hey Funny ya those MRE's were stored very well they were in the guys house for the last 32 years. I will be sending Me Ancient a corn beef hash to try out real soon. RUSTYSURPLUS
you guys need to try Latvian mre
Martin, perhaps one day. TFW
Hey pops...have you ever came across a book of matches that didn't work?
Not in an MRE, Danny. How about you? TFW
You definitely are not kneading that cheese long enough it takes a few minutes to get it nice and thin! Is best to warm it up some and knead it smooth and thin.
Yeah, but then you can't have cheese with multiple colors and textures oozing from a tube. To quote the current occupant of our White House, 'Common, Man!' TFW
Wish I could see a frankfurters metal.🤤
? TFW
What are the ingredients of spread cheese?
Cheese and something to preserve it for a long time.....I don't ask too many questions. TFW!
I always add the coffee to the cocoa powder with the creamer an just add a little more water to make a army mocachino
Great idea. Hopefully I can remember for next time. TFW
@@MeAncient its a nice treat i promise ya. Just gotta make sure the perportion of water is to your likeing
Lmao i don't know why i found it so funny at 4:33 when he said "at least it's not soft and pliable like taffy" as he proves it's soft and pliable like taffy
I''m happy to see you appreciated the humor. TFW
Was it Steve1989MREinfo who gave you the 90s MRE?
No, it was Steve from Idaho. He is a former Marine, too. I failed to mention that in the video. Next one when I use another one he may send me. TFW
@@MeAncientI will be there to watch the next one
Hey Playscale howdy I am the Steve Me Ancient is talking about.. aka @RUSTYSURPLUS thx for watching !!
If I’m not mistaken they have a domino sugar plant in New Orleans
I think you are correct. TFW, Aaron.
Blue wasn’t new, they had some dye in them that wasn’t good so they got rid of the blue for a while in the late 80s, early 90s
Interesting. I hadn't heard that. TFW
Why am I getting this notification 2 days late 😭
Not sure, Cathy. I'm happy you have taken the time to watch it.
More salt the better for ration heaters you don’t add enough whole packet maybe 2
Tks for the tip and TFW, James.
Where is the link for steces channel
It's in there now. TFW and the reminder.
me ancient did you ever dress up as santa during christmas at the military exchange store
Never did. TFW, David.
These all look like great meals compared to the ones we got in Vietnam in the early 70s and see rats that we got each lotta times you had to eat them cold because you couldn’t have a fire
That would have been tough. We had C Rats from Viet Nam era when I was in boot camp and in the FMF initially. TFW
I grew up on MRE meals I grew up on a army base my buddies and I would go out were they would play war and load up on them they would give us all we wanted I liked them and ate them every day I’m not fond of them now days
Wow this MRE bearly but from USSR time's 🤯
Indeed! Those were the Cold War days, for sure. TFW
