EATING 45 YEAR OLD C-RATION HAM & EGGS! I TRY POUND CAKE & PEANUT BUTTER

  • I received 4 boxes of 1970s C Rations from a friend who's father gave them to him from his active duty time in the 1970s. We opened and tried the peanut butter, pound cake, chocolate, crackers and coffee. Also opened the chopped ham and eggs. These meals are the precursor to MREs. Come along to see what was edible and what wasn't.

I'm older than you. Born on a military base. Dad was COE and after floods & years at Elmandorf I was was in such bad shape that the military would not take me at the height of Vietnam. But I grew up on C rats. In 1970 there was an Army Surplus store on about every corner. I could buy C's and Mil Sterno for 10 cents a can. I went to an old high school that was due to be torn down and they closed the cafeteria. So the pockets in my OD Field jacket were always full of C's & Sterno. Fruit cake, Pound cake, & peanut butter were the best.

Onboard USS Joseph Hewes in 1979, had General Quarters for 7 plus hours...so we at Repair 5 got battle messing which consisted of 2 cases of C-rations (opened up from the bottom) for our dinner/supper meal. The C-rats were all dated 1972 and had cigarettes. I was the (un)lucky recipient of the Ham and Lima Beans meal, which of course was the only example out of both cases. Several guys there that day had served during Viet Nam and they were beyond amused at my bad luck in getting what they called "ham and M-F'rs". Did have a pound cake though, so I didn't starve.

Wow, the instant reaction the Ancient had to the coffee creamer, priceless!! I was employed as the QC lab tech at a company that made canned chicken. I would check the quality of the hermetic seal on the cans each hour. I'll bet that these cans weren't sealed with a shot of steam that is added just 5 milliseconds before the lid is joined to the can body, then sealed. When the steam cools, you have a vacuum, that greatly increases the shelf life of the product. Not sure if that is the issue, but, more than likely, it is. God bless guys, great videos.

@@MeAncient I worked there from 2010 until mid 2013. It was for the Hormel Foods plant in Dubuque Iowa. I started as a QC lab tech, and was then promoted into the maintenance department. Yeah, they put me right back on the chicken canning line, learning all about the production machinery. They eventually made me the unofficial production line set up guy. Every size and type of lid, (EZ pull or standard lid), requires about a 6 to 8 hour set up for the entire production line. I lost track on how many times that did a changeover!! LOL!! Keep the videos coming, God bless. :)

I'm not a doctor or a nutritionist. Make sure you understand that. So I cannot give any medical or health advise.
I have heard that the test is if you push on the top of the can good and it makes a clicking sound, the food is probably compromised. We've eaten lots of canned goods in our home over the years that were 'expired.' Never been sick from it. But it wasn't usually meat....only veggies and fruit. Just use your head, check for the clicking sound, and do a smell test before tasting. When you taste it, don't keep eating it if it's nasty or distasteful.
But remember, I have no idea what I am talking about as far as professionally goes. Take it for what it's worth, that is, what you paid for it.....nothing.

I guess it cannot be helped, even if there is no mold or bacteria, food molecules will slowly react and decay unless frozen (and even then it just slows down significantly). Makes me wonder how well rations that were left or lost by different polar expeditions are preserved.

If you had seen some of Steve's videos, you would have known not to mess around with that creamer. The chocolates seem to be hit or miss. The rest is just common sense.
I don't think that I have ever seen Steve reject a cup of instant coffee from a ration of any age. The instant cocoa is another matter...
Steve has learned some lessons the hard way. He was actually poisoned by a Chinese (I believe) MRE that was still within the expiration date.
Be careful out there Me Ancient.
