As an Australian I will say Vegemite is an acquired taste out side the country. Best description is the taste is similar to a bullion cube, very salty. Vegemite can be spread as a topping, added to a soup or stew or added to hot water for a drink and jokesters will say it works well as an axle grease or applied to ones head to keep your hair in place in a strong wind. A good video on Australian mre's.

Vegemite is pretty cool, i had some from a friend and i loved using it in soups & stews to add some depth to the dish when outdoors, i also higly advise trying "Vegeta", its basically salt that has been mixed with fine chopped vegetables and the salt took all the flavor & moisture out of them, goes really well with bread & butter and of course in soups & stews, if you wanna switch it up and have the saltyness without the yeast than give it a go👍

Here in South Africa we get both Vegemite and Marmite a yeast extract, Grew up on Marmite but don't like it all that much same as Vegemite, I will only thinly spread it on bread and only time when I loved either was with grated cheese in a sandwich. When I cook then I use a lot of either for bit more flavor in stews soups or even Minced meat (ground beef for the yankees lol).

As an Australian, the milk chocolate goes white and chalky when its a year or so old. Vegemite is a multi use product, because its so salty (fermented veg products) its great in a gravy, stew and on toast, spread lightly on the toast
    ... enjoy :)

As an Australian all I have to say about vegemite is to spread it very very thin, don’t eat it like Nutella, butter and thin vegemite on toast goes alright, or on crackers with cheese.

You were so close to the ultimate discovery, they were on the same tray even. Mashed potatoes with a little bit of vegimite mixed through it is great. Also vegimite in hot water makes a nice savory drink that goes well with bread.

The can opener is a FRED - ‘field ration eating device’. I had many from camps with Cadets. So useful. Vegemite is only a fairly thin layer with butter, or can be added to the meals for a savoury punch. We used to add it to our field rations when heating them up. Muesli is usually only made with hot water in the winter, cold water or milk in the other seasons

Great video. Our soldiers certainly are lucky to hvae such high quality rations. Just on the cream crackers being plain, they are usually used with either the cheese or spread with plum jam as they are very bland and the toppings add much needed flavour to them. :)

Hey mate great video, I've eaten my fair share of RAT Pack's (MRE's) and im stoked that you liked them. I would say that none of my mates including myself , ever drink the protien drink or even the sports drinks, and for the Vegemite the best way to eat them is with the cream crackers with the cheese and a little bit of the Vegemite. Being so hot down here, we just put the main meals on the roof of our PMV's (Bushmasters) and the sun will heat them up. Great video hope to see more Aussie content.

for the dried biscuits, try vegemite and cheese with them. The jam or sweetened condensed milk can also go with the muesli to make it a little sweeter.
Vegemite can also be used in the mains to change the flavour.

Hello there Me Ancient, it’s great to see you doing another video, I’ve missed your stories.
That protein drink definitely looked a bit dodgy! The cream crackers are supposed to be eaten with the cheese. They’ve been around in the UK for at least 100 years and that isn’t an exaggeration! When I was a girl in the 70s, the cream crackers and cheese would appear on the table after your Sunday lunch. Vegemite is yeast extract, Aussies have Vegemite and we Brits have Marmite. The best way to eat it is on hot toast with butter and you only need a very thin layer! It’s said that you will either love it or hate it! (the haters say that if wasps made honey, it would taste like marmite)
    Looking forward to next time😊

Hey. As an Australian you kind of need to have a guide to take you on the Vegemite journey. I always see videos of people overseas trying it and they always eat too much in one mouthful. The best way to eat it is to make generously buttered toast and spread trace amounts of the Vegemite on it. I mean trace amounts. Like half a teaspoon worth spread as evenly as you can. It will taste completely different to putting a teaspoon worth in your mouth all at once with nothing else. It may be an acquired taste but it doesn't take long to go from trace amounts to having large amounts. The other main option that is similar to Vegemite over here is called promite. I personally prefer promite. Promote vs Vegemite is a huge thing over here. Ward have been fought, friendships broken and families ripped apart over this.
Love your videos by the way. I love that you rated the Australian mre so highly. It has some iconic foods in it, like the sweetened condensed milk.

Pardon me for being a little long winded explaining why. But I swear by these MREs. I’m a retired Police Sergeant. In 1997 I was in the New South Wales, Australia - also a member of the regional swat team equivalent. Bordering rural and wilderness (rain forest, eucalyptus forest) areas used for growing cannabis crops with occasional armed guards or just crazy off grid people like at Ruby Ridge or doomsday religious cults. I had a bushcraft/field craft dive bag with all our own copywrited pattern digital camo gear. (The local defence force objected to us wearing their pattern camos). Long story short I took the Australian MRE at the time and took the biscuits, tin of cheese and tube of jam and shoved it in a day pack with some gatorades and a camelpak. Never when in the bush without them. Also took a gortex jacket, compass, map, (gps was a bit patchy at times in heavy rain or canopy back then) first aid, knife, lighters, radio batteries. The amazing think although rated for 5 years I still have the unopened packet of biscuits, processed cheese tin and strawberry jam tube on my mantle piece today almost 30 years later, I think they would still be fine to eat too.

Sometimes while hiking i would chop my jerky up and soak it in soup. Or to make soup. Sounds silly but at the end of a long day and especially if its chilly that hot "jerky" broth is welcome.
Adding a bit of vegemite to the broth just makes it taste even better. Another good broth maker thats light to bring hiking is the jerky and a couple squares of kombu seaweed. It adds minerals and nice flavor to a cup of broth while taking up a very tiny amount in your pack.
But i love vegemite. Its one of those things. Either you do or you don't. Good for vitamins and adding salty umami flavors.
I add to grill cheese or mixed one heaping tablespoon to a stick of butter(ratio 1 tablespoon to 1/4 cup butter )and use it to baste on roasted veg and chicken it is phenomenal.
In the US i found it at world market or cheaper on amazon.

    Speaking from experience
    1. I have never come across someone adding creamer to the muesli, usually it's mixed with the protein powder. That is a unique take on them muesli.
    2. You usually mix the soup and the mashed potato together. That produces a really nice filling and flavourful meal
    3. Steak bars are GOLD.
    4. Jam biscuits are often known as "fuck off" biscuits depending on the shape of the centre. If it's a heart you share it, if it is a circle you don't.
    5. The cheese clogs you up.

Vegemite and it's UK cousin Marmite is a beef extract that is quite salty. It's a love or hate type situation. Some of my UK friends spread it on bread and add cheese. I usually used it in cooking like Pot Roast or Braised Beef Ribs. Does enhance the flavor. Thanks for the content

Just FYI vegetated can be used several ways. Straight from the container use just a very small amount and spread just as thin of a layer on a cracker to eat it that way. Personally I put about a tablespoon of it into a 3qt pot of venison stew or just about any meat that you might throw a bullion cube into to give it an umami flavor.

Great video guys. So much food. You shock me though when you ate the vegemite. It was way too much. I live in england and we have marmite here. Its pretty much the same thing from what I've heard. But you either love it or hate it. That's the marmite slogan over here. I love it! Anyway best way to eat it is on hot buttery toast. You only need a thin layer of the vegemite/marmite. I suggest trying it again on toast with lots of butter n a thin amount of it. xxx
