I’ve made this twice now. First time just a small batch and this time I quadrupled the recipe. I anticipate this lasting me 5 months and 100 loads based off of my first batch! It cleans my clothes so well and I only use about 2 tablespoons per load. It even leaves my dog’s bed smelling fresh without bleach. 10/10 thank you for the awesome recipe!

Calculate how much soap you’re using per load. It’s likely to be minuscule.
FYI: spread baking soda on a cookie sheet and bake for two hours at 400 degrees. Baking soda in my area is 0.50 a pound and washing soda is $1.07 a pound. Decide for yourself if it's worth it.

Ive only made washing soda when I needed soap and didnt have it but had baking soda. Its a pain in the a and you have ti stir it also.

Friendly FYI. Soap builds up in the trap in a washing machine, as if it were wax, and burns out the motor. In old machines one could pull back the machine and take it out and clean it (but no need if you use detergent) but in the new ones, the trap isn't removable.
are you trying to say that the liquid version of this would be better for this reason? (zote, borax, washing soda dissolved in hot water in 5-gallon bucket)
This is true. It creates a buildup because of the soap, whether its powder or liquid. Yes for a while it works wonders like nothing else but eventually you end up with congestion issues. Another youtuber has done some research and also done a little meta on it and found no solution. Soap is soap and requires friction to break it down and the action of the drum dosent do that... would love to be able to do this, but its not worth it unfortunately.

You did. I have been making my own detergent for a little over 2years and it has been good to me. I use between 1 to 3 tablespoons depending on the load.

Even lazier , and for pods do this: Cut the Zote soap into half inch cubes. One cube for regular loads, two cubes for large or heavily soiled loads. Add the soda separately according to the directions on the box. I've been doing it this way for over 3 years with great results. Keep the cubes in a jar with a screw on lid and they won't dry out.

What brand of laundry soap would be best for us in Australia I wonder .. I’ll have to go and check some out . Sard is an amazing laundry soap on its own ( for rubbing on stains ect) so I wonder if that one would do . Anyway good recipe 😉👍
Sard should work! Zote is for rubbing on stains as well, so it sounds similar. Did you try it?
What about good old sunlight soap? That is cheap but I am not the fan of the smell
The bar soap is called “Fels Naptha” not Napa...just so folks can find it easier.✌🏻 Just FYI....I find this does not get our clothes clean though.🤷🏻♀️ Tried MANY different diy laundry soap mixtures & feel our clothes just are not clean unless I use an actual store bought detergent. I have a LG front loader for reference.
Sorry you are not having success. We find that it works great for us. I do like to pretreat any stains first, but my teenagers don't always pretreat theirs and their clothes come out clean.

Hi Sara, it's a Farberware 3000 and it's 12 cups! My last one was only half as big and I had to make the detergent in two batches. I've had this one for about a year now and I love it. I didn't pay for it, though, as my mom bought it and it was collecting dust in her pantry. When my other one broke, she gave it to me. Here is a link to it:

We are on a private well and our water is super hard. I made this DIY laundry soap but I don't really smell clean clothes when I pull them out of the washer or dryer. I'm wondering if hard water does something to make it more difficult to clean or if maybe adding more washing soda would help?
Where I live we have hard water too, but I'm guessing well water is even harder. You could try that and see if it helps! Good luck!

Of course hard water reduces cleaning effectiveness. More washing soda would help. Rinsing with vinegar would reduce accumulation of soap scum. Switching to a commercial product which does not contain soap would be best.
Add more washing soda and add vinegar to your wash, you could also add essential oils to the mix like lavender or lemon.

Masking odors caused by bacteria feeding on deposits of soap scum and contaminants trapped in it is not really a solving the problem, is it?
Can an essential oil be added to this during the final blending process?
I think you could, but I know that any moisture will cause it clump. If you want scent, you can add those scent beads. I have done this before, but it cost too much for me.

How long doe one batch of Zote and washing Arm & Hammer soap cost total for just one batch? We need a annual cost savings for 2 people.
It really depends on how much it cost in your area and how much you use per batch. I use abt 2 T a batch. Zote cost me $1.12 a bar, and washing soda is $4.12 for a box. It takes one bar of the soap and only 1 cup of the soda, making the cost for one batch $1.64, but I'm not sure how many loads I get out of that batch, but I would guess 30-40 loads.

If you get 40 loads per batch, each load receives 4.4 dime’s weight of soap.
I’d use the ZOTE POWDERED SOAP. No need to shred it.

That Arm and Hammer washing powder doesn't soften water. Do you see anyone using it for that? I don't either......
Is this safe to use for very sensitive skin? Will this work on stains? Will this work on cold water? Is this safe for baby skin?
I've used this for the past year and I have very sensitive skin, plus allergies and asthma. And all of those have improved since I started using this diy laundry soap. I have an 18m little girl and it went well with her too. It does work with cold water providing you grind the ZOTE soap well, when I did it I used a cheese grinder because that's what I saw in another video, but this seems better! Hope it helps.
I agree with Rosie, it should be fine on sensitive skin since it doesn't have extra scents added. This would also be true for baby skin. If I have stains, I like to pretreat, FYI. I use warm water, but cold should be fine. Let us know your experience.

Lori, I was thinking of making this for my children. They have infants and elementary school age children. They get very dirty. Does it clean well for those types of stains?
This is a good, general detergent, but it doesn't have the stain-fighting extras that you would find in say, Tide, for example. Because of this, I like to pretreat stains. It is still cheaper to pretreat (I like hydrogen peroxide and Dawn dish soap or Spray and Wash) and then use this homemade detergent, than to use an expensive commercial brand. If your goal is to save money, have less irritants and be more environmentally-friendly, I would give it a shot. If you'd rather spend more and save time pre-treating, then I'd buy the commercial detergent. I've found success in the past with Whisk and it's a bit cheaper than Tide.
My kids are in their preteens and teens now, and they still get pretty dirty from sports -- thank you track and football -- and this detergent gets dirt, sweat and stink out, but for stains (especially food) I have them pretreat.

This is not a detergent. The only surfactant is bar soap.
Is this HE safe? My washer is HE and Im only supposed to use this type in my machine
I've been using homemade laundry detergent in my HE washer for the last 15yrs, no problems. I wash in hot water, my husband is a garbage engineer & my daughter is a nurse.

I don't use a HE washer, but I've heard some do with good success, but I can't vouch for it, personally. This is just a basic soap, so if you need bleaching, you'll need to use bleach or more natural alternatives such as lemon juice.

It’s spelled Zote. You can use Fels Napa, Dr. Bronners ( more expensive and beats the purpose of saving money) or any Castile soap or you can make your own plain coconut oil soap. Using coconut oil, lye & distilled water. Suggest if you make your own soap, that you make lots of it cause it takes 4-6 weeks to cure the soap before using.
So idk if I'm doing this right. 1 cup or washing soda and 1 bar soap. My soap is 14.1 oz. Once I mix it I feel like I have way too much bar soap than washing soda. So I did my first wash and it wasn't clean. What could I have done wrong?

Chemistry: there is no such thing as a ‘detergent bar’ of soap. It’s just soap intended for washing laundry. Detergents (as surfactants) are different chemically than soaps (as surfactants)

Silly question but I've seen bread keep fresh and last longer with a celery stick do you think that will help also with this ?
You could try. I would worry the moisture from the celery would make the detergent clump. If you try it, do let me know your results :)
Is it HE safe? Can you also use the laundry detergent a front load washer?
We have used it in a front-load washer with great results. I haven't tried it with HE machines, but from some research, it should be fine. HE machines use less water, and thus a low suds detergent is recommended. Some soaps and detergents use an ingredient in machines to make them extra foamy. Since this detergent doesn't contain those, it should be a problem. If you try it, please let us know your results.

Hi Katie, It should be totally safe for children and babies. have used it on my kids when they were little, but I have not tested it on babies. The reason most detergent is not good for babies is because it has a lot of extra additives such as perfumes that can be harsh on tender baby skin. The container was given to me in 1998 as a wedding gift. It was called a crystal biscuit jar, and given to me by a family friend called the Gongs. I wish I knew where they got it. Sorry! I know any old container would work -- and I've been using it for years with teenagers, but sometimes mundane chores like laundry, just go better with something extraordinary -- like crystal biscuit jars.
You can buy containers like these in home woods.

Borax is a water softener and it only works in hot water. You don't need it.

Doesn't your food processor get gummed up with the zote? Last time i shredded it and tried to crumble it in my new Cuisinart one a couple months ago the sucker was so gummed up took awhile to get it clean. I knew it wouldn't mess it up it was just soap that would eventually rinse off. The ivory I heated in microwave was less of mess when i put it in processor. I make my own ivory snow since all there is is liquid you cannot find in stores that has to be ordered. The newer snow has all these additives and chemicals anymore. I wanted pure old ivory snow good for dishes etc like it was in the past.
Amy Le Moyne add some washing soda or other powder ingredients to the soap when using the processer. It really works!
another idea that works for me is to let the zote sit out for a day to harden. Then there isn't so much gummy mess. hope this helps.

You could try a blender, but I'm not sure how well it would do at grading up the detergent bar. I think if you don't have a food processor, it might be better to grade the detergent bar by hand.

You could. I'm sure it would not hurt. Washing soda is baking soda that has been baked, so they might do the same thing.

Wrong. They don’t ‘do the same thing’. Washing soda is sodium carbonate. Carbonate reacts with hard water minerals to form insoluble carbonate salts, thereby preventing them from interfering with soaps, forming scum. That’s how it softens water. Baking soda is sodium bicarbonate. Bicarbonate doesn’t soften water under laundry conditions.

It really is helpful. You could probably grate the soap by Hand, but it wouldn't be a fine, because then I use the s-blade to grind up the grated soap and washing soda.

As far as i know, Zote is less than $1/bar & she only use 1 cup of washing soda (not entire box).
Now in 2020, this cost $42.00. Zote is now $8.00 per bar IF you can find it.

lilstep noel I do too. The washing soda and borax are not just boosters but are also water softeners. I don’t have any issues with it cleaning. I don’t use borax in mine (my recipe is the same only I add oxygen cleaner like oxyclean)
All u did was was alot more work..Your cutting, food processor and food processor again?? Grate that bar with a big holed grater, just like you'd do for cheese. Less mess and having to wash the food processor and then not use it for food again. This soap is super lemon scented.
