  • This recipe boost the scent of your homemade laundery detergent. Add 1/4 cup per reg. load. This also softens clothes. Add more scent for your liking. Lavender is great for linens. Citrus is great for towels and clothing. Experiment and enjoy softer laundry. Thanks for watching. ~Chef Janie

    Your welcome! Lavender scent seems to work best, but I add the lemon butter scents to my wool dryer balls and that really gets my clothes fresh and soft. Dryer balls cut drying time down about 10 a load too, saving dollars!!

    Excellent video and teaching. I love Purex crystals, but stopped buying them because they were so expensive. Thank you so much for this, and it helps treat the hard water, which we have, to boot!! Thanks, will definitely do!

      Sometimes I add gain or purex crystals to my mix and make the more expensive stuff go further...or add ess oils to make the scent stronger...I make my own wool dryer balls and add scent to those as well. Try my homemade laundry detegent too...that is only about 10 a yr vs hundreds! Save save save!! LOL>>

    Hi Johnathan! Here are the ingredients: Epsom Salts enough to fill a gallon jar, Favorite scented 'essecence oil'. I use a lemon or orange scent...You can use lavender for bedsheets...etc.. Just use about 12 drops of ess. oil per quart of epsom salts (unscented bath salts)... Blend really well. I use 1/8 to 1/4 cup per load in washer with my homemade laundry detergent and my homemade liquid softener. This cuts the static clean and softens my blankets/bath towels too. :D

    I can't believe I found this... I'M SO GOING TO BE MAKING THIS.... Mahalo again for making this video and explaining everything so clearly on the different types of scents that I can use for this.. I've been using alot of the Purex as it helps alot to have the dog fur come off of everything. I was worried about the adding cost to doing laundry by buying one more thing as I have to go to the laundry mat for our clothes.. NOW I don't need to worry anymore.. Thank you again!!

    Try 100% wool dryer balls (about 4-6 of them) by either making ur own or buying on ebay...these really help with puppy hair, fluffing clothes, scent (I roll my dryer balls in my homemade fabric softener before each load) and they cut drying time down by 10 minutes a load!

  • @OurLittleHomestead
    @OurLittleHomestead  Před 11 lety

    Epsom Salts are in the pharmacy dept at our Wally World or at most drug stores. The scents are simply 'clear colored' Watkins from Walmart baking isle. You can use a clear ess. oil, or a clear potpourri as well, as long as it doesn't stain clothes with the oils or colorants. Test a pc of old fabric in a sink full of warm and cold water first and see how it goes before using.

    I'd read the bottle first and make sure the oil doesn't cause staining and rinses out easily. You could try a few drops on an old t shirt, was through and see if it stained. Then add to crystals... oil and water does not mix...especially a heavy mix of it. Tx!!

    I love your videos and have a couple questions about the scent booster. Does this work as a softener too, or do i need to make a softener to add with this? Can I use candle fragrance oils or body safe fragrance oils?

    • @OurLittleHomestead
      @OurLittleHomestead  Před 10 lety

      You don't want to stain your clothes with oils...use only 'clear' scents, like essence oils safe for fabrics from Amazon and I even use Watkin's food extracts...they are clear and give a great scent too without staining clothes.
      Remember, homemade doesn't have the chemicals store-bought detergents, softeners or crystals have so they are a much lighter scented once rinsed and dried.
      Yes, the crystals help soften your water and fluff your towels and such a bit before putting out to dry or in dryer. You can even add Purex crystals to this and mix to make the expensive stuff go further...I found that works best in our country water with so much lime in it. And Yes, I add additional softener to wash load; I have a HOW to MAKE Your own fabric softener video on my channel as well as how to make 10 gallons of laundry detergent for under $10.00 on my youtube...if interested in saving more money!!

      Janie Pendleton Just to follow up, I bought what I was told were fabric safe oils. They are 100% pure fragrance oils. They are also clear. Would that be safe for my laundry booster? They smell fantastic, but i don't want to ruin things and waste my time if it wont work. If they are acceptable, any idea of how many drops i would put per 2lb of Epsom salt? Finally, i see you add these to your home made laundry detergent at the beginning. We have a front loader, and I thought these would go in the washer, not the dispenser? Does it matter?
      I plan on making your home made detergent when we are done with the store bought that we have and will probably make the softener too. :) Thanks for ALL the help Janie!

    • @OurLittleHomestead
      @OurLittleHomestead  Před 10 lety

      Try a 1/2 cup of epsom salts and a few drops of the fragrance, mix well and add to a 'towels' load (not to expensive clothes load) first, and see if that works for you first. Adjust the oils in laundry detergent to match the scent in your booster and you should be fine. I like doing this and that way I'm not mixing scents from washer to dryer. For ex; I keep everything kinda citrusy (is that even a word?)...lol...and that seems to help not to overpwr my nose. I suffer from migraines so I have to be careful. What brand of fabric safe oils did you find? Where can others buy these? Thanks!! Let me know how it turns out.

    • @robertcooper8355
      @robertcooper8355 Před 10 lety

      Janie Pendleton Hi Janie, i'm back with an update. I have tried numerous options. I have tried 3 different combinations of mixture. 1) essential oils 2) the exact same extracts and combination you used in the video and 3) a couple other fragrance oils that i mentioned in my original posts. They smell wonderful in the container i mix them in and they smell good in the wash, but after the wash, i can barely smell them and when they are done drying, it is completely scent free. Am I just not using enough oil with the salt? Someone told me that the fragrance could just be reacting to the heat and breaking down. I use 1/4 cup of the boost mix per load. I don't want to be overpowered by scent, but i DO want to be able to smell something. The last batch i made i used about 25 drops of lemon myrtle to just over a pound of salt. Nothing. I added a couple drops of lavendar to the next load to see if the lavendar lasts through the dryer. On the plus side, our clothes are coming out very soft!
      I thought at one point that the detergent fragrance i was using was overpowering the boost, so i made my own powdered detergent with borax, washing soda and ivory bar soap. (Fun project my daughter helped me with - she loved watching the soap in the microwave).
      Any advice on how to get the scent to last through the dryer? Thanks so much!
      Bob

    • @OurLittleHomestead
      @OurLittleHomestead  Před 10 lety

      Dry scenting dryer balls...it will dry your clothes wrinkle free and leave a nice scent. I add dryer sheets as well to dryer. The problem I think you are having is that we get used to strong chemical filled scents in our store bought version and it takes awhile to get used to a lighter fresher scent. I suffer from migraines so this works for me. You can add purex crystals to the epsom salts and make the crystals go further saving money that way. I make homemade laundry softener and homemade detergent as well...all the same scent...could be why I notice mine. Mostly the epsom salts are to soften harder water...so I'm glad that worked for you!

    Do you have to use the essential oils to scent your laundry detergent or can you use the stuff in the baking isle like peppermint extract?

    • @OurLittleHomestead
      @OurLittleHomestead  Před 10 lety +3

      I've used both...in video I'm using Watkins from baking isle walmart because it's clear and doesn't stain clothes...but I find the scent just doesn't stay on the clothes through the dryer, I ended up using ess oils that worked better ...but using Purex crystals, 1 bottle to three containers of epsom salts worked great...Purex has chemicals though...and the way I made it, it doesn't. Some ideas on how to make it go further though. Hope this helps.

      I also have another question....about laundry detergent this time. I made some with Zote, not liquid like your video, but powder. I used a small food processor after grating the soap, but it still isn't SUPER fine. Will it be ok to still use, and will it still dissolve in hot water?? The Zote seemed pretty soft, so I'm assuming, yes....but I need your expert opinion before putting it into my washer. Thanks! :)

    • @OurLittleHomestead
      @OurLittleHomestead  Před 10 lety +1

      The zote should melt away in warm water washes, and if it soaks long enough in the cold water washes...this is why I make it liquid form...but so far, I've not stained anything with it. Give it try on some bath towels and kitchen towels and sock items...see how it goes...then try on darks...jeans and t shirts and see if it works...if you notice white streaking; pour it into a large bucket, add hot water and let rest six hours and pour into jugs...it will be the liquid version. Hope this idea helps.~ Janie

    • @OurLittleHomestead
      @OurLittleHomestead  Před 8 lety +1

      +Maria Collins This is not a store-bought, full of chemicals type booster; it is to help boost softness and less static in clothes; did it do that much? Also, if you are used to the store bought, your senses automatically want a higher scent. But it is the scents and chemicals that bother ppl. You can add storebought booster crystals to your machine instead of homemade...or make storebought go further by mixing them in a jar and adding that. I add alive booster to my crystals to boost the scent at times. I found that gave me a migraine though. Scents bother me which i why I started making my own detergents and such. You could add more scent to the crystals as well. Adjust till you get it the way you like it. Let me know.
