"Salt is sodium chloride (NaCl) and Epsom salt is magnesium sulfate. ... So by adding Epsom salt to your laundry you are making your hard water actually harder. Hard water causes soap to be less effective, fades colors and causes fabric to feel rough and scratchy."
"Rinsing with sea water is less effective at remove the soap and would leave the fabrics salty taking longer to dry and leaving the fabrics feeling stiff. Launderers in many developing countries just use one or sometimes two rinses where water is precious. You could then keep the rinse water for the next wash"

b pavilion I used the Epsom Salt with fragrance oil from my soaps & it made my clothes softer than without it plus they smell better than vinager. So, it worked for me. I really noticed the difference in my towels. So, I guess it works different for other people.

Magnesium reacts with washing soda to produce chalk. It reacts with soaps to deposit soap scum. Whether or not you believe it, science is always right.

Epsom salts contain magnesium which is one of the major minerals in hard water. What's happening is you're making your water hard or harder. I use coarse kosher salt or non iodized table salt.

I add the same essential oil to my wool dryer balls. I just want my clothes clean, fresh and soft. I wear fragrance so I don't want laundry scents to clash with it. I hope this helps. 😃

I make my own laundry soap, and I do add the scent Crystal's which are Epsomsalts with a nice scent. So, this might be an added boost of freshness and softness. Thank you!

Here's my recipe. It makes a very large batch, 2 large 5 gallon buckets full of the powder form. Then I make a few gallons of liquid form laundry as needed. You can reduce the recipe as you like.
      Ingredients:
      7 bars Fels Naphtha
      3 bars Zote soap
      2 lbs Baking Soda
2 Boxes Super Washing Soda (55oz boxs)
2 boxes Borax Laundry Booster (4lb. Boxs)
      2 boxes OxyClean (3lbs boxes)
3 to 5 bottles Scent boosters (Salt Crystal type, not the waxy circles)
      Directions 1:
Grate up bar soap. Mix with all other ingredients. Run through food processor to make smaller bits. Put into 5 gallon bucket(s) w lid, or your choice.
      Directions 2:
In lg pot add 1 gallon water (I use an empty laundry soap, or orange juice etc jug, fill that with hot water, then add to pot, to get exact jug amount. Add ½ cup dry soap mix and bring to a boil until all dry mixture is dissolved, while stirring. Then remove from hot burner, let cool slightly, and pour into your jug. You can add about a spoon of liquid glycerin (which will help it stay mixed). It slightly gels and you will need to shake the bottle before use. I just love this mixture. I'll have soap for many many years to come from this. You can also reduce the bars of soap if you like. Fels Naptha is great for stains, and Zote has citronella which helps keeping mosquitoes away. Crystal scent beads are made from Epsom salt and is a water softener (the other waxy ones may clog up washer). I prefer making it liquid as I do a lot of cold water washing and the bar soap doesn't really break down enough in dry form.
Hope this is helpful, you can see other recipies on CZcams, I have and came up with this one.

Kimono Snail I’ve noticed it definitely softens the clothes. The smell isn’t as strong as commercial softeners, but you aren’t getting the toxins from the synthetic fragrance or exposure to all of the bad ingredients. Plus, it is so much cheaper!

Ridiculous. No, this is not useful.
Epsom salt? Are you kidding? Did you sleep through chemistry class?
Hint: look up hard water. Note that magnesium is a culprit. Follow up with why you want softened water for laundry.
Helpful suggestion: take this jar and dump it out in your garden.
