- Archery deer season opened in the A zone on July 9th. I hunted here last year for 10 days - saw lots of deer, more than ever before, and I learned a lot. This time I tent camped at the nearby campground and didn't even have my dog with me.
I learned a lot, but I am still without a deer.

Thx for sharing your video.
Thank you for watching!
Good for you it’s called hunting for a reason all this work will pay off. Keep hammering 💪🏼
Thank you! We have 2 more weekends and luckily the temperatures are dropping right now. Here's to hoping!! And there will be some rain this weekend
I like a little low volume music from time to time, lol, good job young lady, keep hunting
Thank you so much!!
No deer sucks, but you're still out there hunting. Good for you!
True 😊 not the kill, it's the chase that counts, right?
Keep trying dont give up. Have fun
Thank you!
Too bad about the truck repair cost ($$$$) but salute renting a vehicle to get out!!👍
Yes, I couldn't just not go lol. I was so worried with that truck. It was almost brand new, I worried that it would get scratched up and all dirty with the camping gear. I even put a tarp in the truck bed.
Luckily it stayed clean, even the inside. I don't know how, I'm kinda rough with tricks and cars.
I had my truck for 2.5 years and never cleaned it. Washed it once. My mom was so troubled by how dirty it was that she said she would pay to get it detailed. After renting that clean truck, I said ok.
Now, I can see what I have been missing lol
keep it up like you said hunting is not esay.. love your determination! Good luck on you next hunt
Thank you so much! I'm going back there in 2 days and stay as long as I need to (well, probably no more than a week lol)
Thanks for sharing your observations. I've observed similar things during my time out hunting, it's nice to hear others having similar experiences that helps to confirm some of my theories about them but they're still unpredictable lol.
Thank you so much for watching! I'm still trying to put this puzzle together lol. In the A zone I always saw forks and spikes together. In D8, it was usually one spike or fork with a few does - sure it was a few weeks after season opened so maybe they started to pair up.
In D7, I hardly see any bucks lol. It is in the A zone that I have seen the most bucks.
I also noticed on that landscape the deer come out in the morning and evening in the wide open areas. Yellow field, some trees here and there but they're out in the open, I'm sure it's to see the predators. But around noon they're out just as much. Ut always in the shade, not just under one tree but in forested areas. It makes sense, who would want to be out in the sun in the heat lol.
I also noticed in Arizona and in the D zones as well that deer are out midday just as much as morning or evening. In fact, overall, I have seen the most deer between 11:30 and 2:30. Especially when it's full moon, I think they go back early because they were out all night eating but by 11 am, they're hungry again.
So I know a lot of hunters don't like full moon and they don't hunt midday, but that is one of my favorite times. These deer have to eat, to be able to fight to mate.
These are my theories which I have seen a lot to be confirmed, I just wish I would have a buck to sound more credible lol
@@Huntress308 thanks for sharing all this info! I've noticed similar things with deer entering grassy fields but they tend to be does and spikes, occasionally a forked deer. Depends on the hunting pressure in the area.
In the D-zones, I've been told they hang out high in elevation, basically on the edge of where the trees stop growing until storms push them down.
@@truoutdoors yes, you're right about where the deer could be, but I have listened to a lot of hunters' stories and have seen some of it myself and basically most but not all the deer do go up high, even 8-10k feet where we can't even get to during the summer and then start migrating down.
So at the beginning of the season they can be found at 7-8000 ft and really start moving down when there's a storm / change in weather but often there is not a drop of rain.
At the end of hunting season they migrate down to the Kings River at 1000 ft (bears as well), I even know some of the areas they cross in Shaver Lake.
But! A lot of the deer can be found at any elevation at any time, 5-6000 ft, even lower in the foothills, just like right now there was a buck by my house and I live at 2300 ft. In fact I have seen several bucks in the past month on my property. Most are migrating deer but a lot are resident.
And hunters will tell you that have been taken at all elevations. And a lot of them are taken at 5-6000 ft even at the beginning of the season, so what this tells us is that we can have all the theories, the deer know it better and they will continue to do their thing lol.
Keep it my dear, you'll get one California A zone is tough hunt. It took me 16 yrs to bag my first buck love channel
Big John socal outdoor adventures
Thank you so much! Your encouragement means a lot to me!
People need leave them tiny forks alone so we have bigger deer 🦌 quick rinse feels good doesn't it 😂thanks for sharing hope you get one.
That's true, but if you've been hunting for 4-5 years without success, you can't be picky. At least I can't lol. Feeling desperate haha
@@Huntress308 yes definitely but it will happen
Atleast you seen some deer I've had trips that I never see anything not even fresh tracks. I can't wait till next month I'll be up in the same area where I met you and Lesa a few years ago. On the good note I picked up my deer mount from last year archery the other day it turned out nice. Have a good day
Yes! I'm going back Monday! With my trailer 😊 my truck is fixed and as much money as I put into it, it should be good. I can stay even a week, with the tent it wasn't the most comfortable and it was in the 70s. Now it will be in the 80s, high 80s. So taking a quick shower every evening and having a fridge and a freezer where I can make ice and freeze my water will keep my spirits up 😊
Don’t give up, keep trying your chance will come. I’m curious to know what county you hunt in, I’m from socal and hunt Ventura county with bow. Plenty of game right by water during July so look for active water sources and you’ll find them.
I was in Santa Barbara County. It's pretty dry but I'm sure there is a little water here and there. There are some private properties and I'm sure that's where the deer get their water (mostly)
I think I'm going to go back Tuesday for 5-7 days
Is that near cuyama?
No, not that I know of
Oh okay what part of the zone you go to?
@@BigGameDream this was the south part of A zone
@@rrod49 it was probably me lol. I'm usually lol. I probably had my dog at the campsite in her crate
What's your camera set up like? -Thanks!
In the A zone? Nonexistent lol.
Do you hunt deer in other zone's?
Yes. I live in D7 so I usually hunt that, but I have hunted D8 and up north a couple of years ago.
This year I'll be hunting D7 with my archery tag. I actually live in the mountains so I can hunt close to home. In fact there are some deer on my property 😊
@@Huntress308 I have a place in D6. Good luck to you this season. The buck in my profile picture I waited 4 weeks in the Same spot sun up to sunset. I have harvested three deer in that same spot all 3x3.
Yeah, music at a campground is not good.
That really annoys me!!
I was kinda mumbling to myself "can you please stop that music" and maybe they heard me because the next day they were super quiet lol
