    • @ONLINEMARTY
      @ONLINEMARTY Před 9 lety +6

      ***** All you stated was just special pleading. Which by definition is a fallacious argument by default. To say this life is no more absurd that an afterlife is being dishonest. When you can test or demonstrate that there is an actual afterlife then your maybe correct. This life can be tested and demonstrated.

    • @ONLINEMARTY
      @ONLINEMARTY Před 9 lety +6

      ***** Again your assertion is just special pleading. If you make a god special then you can say the same thing that magic pixies are that reference point. Or the flying spaghetti monster is that same reference point. Having an all powerful god that can do anything would in fact be by definition be in and outside of nature. If this god was outside of nature then it would not exist.

    • @ONLINEMARTY
      @ONLINEMARTY Před 9 lety +5

      Actually yes I can. Because once you give credit to one god then all other gods that mankind have create now have some form of validity to them. Otherwise you go back to special pleading. With or not independent causation more probable does not mean there is a god in anyway shape or form. That doesn't shut down the debate it further intensifies it. IF you say not then again your are being dishonest. Well yeah you need life to live and to love.
      And to honest you only asserting things your not proving them. There is a difference. Maybe need should be part of your vocabulary.

    As a child student in a Catholic school, I was both disgusted, and astounded by the stories in the Bible: When I asked our nun-teacher, why Jesus walked on water, and frightened his followers, she asked: "Do you not believe?"; I answered "No". She then asked, all who do not believe, to raise their hands: Slowly, one by one, the hands went up, until about half the class had their hands in the air. I shall never forget this.

    I think the actual hosts should adopt some of his style a little more often.
    (maybe mellow it a little). But he is advocating for progress in a obvious "cut the crap" way. And thats good. People who follow this show now know the basics of critical thinking and why their beliefs dont fly. Jeff treat them like adults and respect them by doing so.

Glen - "because he's necessary" Host - "why can't I just say the laws of logic are necessary"? Glen - "but you haven't accounted for their existence"..... and he has NO IDEA how completely idiotic his argument is..... then he wants credit for erroneously accounting for the laws of logic.... priceless....

    How to convert an atheist. What an interesting theme. Since I'm already a converted atheist it's unlikely that theism of any kind is ever going to get me back. There is no evidence for gods.
    Jesus stands and knocks at the door. He wants you to let him in so he can save you. Wha is he saving you from? He will save you from what he is going to do to you if you do not let him in.
    Religion cuts you and then offers you a bandaid. It tells you that you are sick and then offers the cure.

    From the first day I was "encouraged" to study the "holy" bible and try to read it, I've never stopped hating that book of books, passages, verses, gospels ect. Regular English spelling and double meaning words sucks bad enough. I actually pity people who spent so much time of their childhood memorizing the entire bible with obvious untruths in it starting from the very first page. It's also a book that states in the book that this book is true. I saved myself years of time I could never get back. Religion forced me to practice my lying skills until I needed to sober up in AA meetings. Many meetings. Step one is about brutal honesty with yourself and measured honesty with loved ones and your sponsor. Also Christopher Hitchens helped me out for comic relief combined with intelligence.

      I did that to my cousin. I lost my faith when I was around 9 years old, when I was able to both read and fully comprehend what I was reading, I was about 13 to 14 when my mother finally accepted that I was probably correct and she lsot her faith soon after, becauswe she was utterly unable to answer my questions, yet even at that age, I was able to explain to her a valid answer to any of hers. She did not like it at first but soon accepted reality.
      So my family is a bassively religious family ( or were ) and my bousin is a huge catholic nutter, and I did this very thing... I converted for her over time, and it was done mostly by phone, I just started to agree wit hher and it was mostly to shut her the fuck up more than anything becyse she is relentless. She now thinks I am back in the fold, but thats only cos she is so incredibly stupid and she is a follower purely because it requires zero knowledge of facts, only to accept what you are told to be religious, and I find that shockingly mental.
      I am proud to say, that my firect family, my brother, sister and mother, not my father though, are now non believers and while at first it was rotten of me, they have accepted this and are now comfortable in the knowledge that there is nothing waiting for them when they die, other than worm food.

    • @BluePiggy
      @BluePiggy Před 7 lety

      Damion Jones Well, if you have a sadistic streak, which I obviously do, tell your cousin next time you feel impatient with her that you've dropped all the religious nonsense and gone back to being rational. And if you're feeling like being a real shit, tell her it's her fault and make up a reason. The more ridiculous, the better. Then tell me whether her head explodes.
      (Okay, I'll admit I'm not actually serious about ruining a family relationship here, but if anyone gets harangued by someone who doesn't matter to them very much, I'd still like to know what happens when you tell them you've deconverted.)
      (Actually, what I'd REALLY like is for someone to play this trick on a Scientologist, but that could be dangerous.)

    Like I said, it's much easier to believe that we simply don't know that it is to suddenly say there's a god who created it all with no evidence of such. If I say I don't know, how can that be 'untenably wrong'?
    Yet claiming that you are somehow privileged above all mankind and you know without doubt that a god exists and created everything can be delusion and 'untenably wrong' You simply make crap up to fill in your gaps in knowledge, your belief stems from ignorance.

    Special pleading and defining into existence... Damn I hate TAG and anyone who thinks it makes sense or proves god is just plainly wrong. The flaws are just so kind numbingly obvious. Sigh. Glad these guys cut to the chase.

    • @KiSs0fd3aTh
      @KiSs0fd3aTh Před 9 lety +2

      Gregory Dearth Actually there are even more wrong things with TAG than special pleading, depending on which version someone uses though.
      The biggest fail is the very first premise, which is the cause and effect. No matter how you spin it, cause and effect only applies to the things INSIDE the universe (actually, that's not even true, quantum don't have causality but let's leave this aside for a moment). But just because the individual parts of the universe obey to cause and effect doesn't mean that the universe itself has to.
      The same way, the parts that an airplane is made up off don't actually fly. The whole airplane though does. So the universe, exactly like the airplane example, more probably than not doesn't follow the same rules that it's individual parts follow.
      Another big fail, again with the first premise, is that it is artificially creating 2 categories. Things that began to exist, and things that didn't. But in order for the 2nd category to be anything more than a synonym for god, you need more things that didn't begin to exist. If god is the only thing that didn't began to exist then they are bringing the thing that they are trying to prove (god) into their premises, which is obviously flawed.
      I can come up with more if you like me to :P

    • @theatheistguard8690
      @theatheistguard8690 Před 9 lety

      Fus Ro Dah No thanks. That was pretty good though. I actually wrote a book on debating apologists (available on amazon) and devoted a whole chapter to just the Kalam (Dr. W. L. Craig version), fully exploring the structural fallacies as well as the more general ones. But when these types of arguments are made the fundamental flaws are almost always:
      Argument from personal incredulity
      Special Pleading
      All the other fallacies are not fundamental on a structural level.

      @KiSs0fd3aTh Před 9 lety +1

      @theatheistguard8690 Před 9 lety

      Fus Ro Dah lol. Yup. The chapter I dedicated to Kalam is pretty damn long. And it was only possible to reduce it to one chapter after explaining various fallacies and simpler forms of bad apologetic arguments in previous chapters. I use St. Aquinas 'the 5 ways,' as a primer of sorts. Same fallacies, just more complicated. It masks its stupidity using pretentious jargon that probably wows the average theist.
