- Hi! This time we're going to give this old Packard Clipper a home so it doesn't get melted down and made into 7 or 8 Yarii. This old girl has seen way better days, but I wanted one for the CWMC used-car lot to class the place up a bit. Thanks for joining us as we take a little look around this straight-8-powered beauty. It's equipped with the Ultramatic transmission, Packard's own automatic. No power steering in this one, though! This car was originally a light grey with a black top and grey interior. At some point it seems like it was repaired after an accident on the left front corner and repainted this green with a white top.
I'm not sure what to do with this Packard, but I just wanted it anyway. Maybe we'll try sometime to get it going again? Let us know what you think.
Thanks for watching this stuff; I enjoy sharing these junkyard gems with you. Please subscribe to the coldwarmotors channel if you like this kind of thing!
Cheers from me and Stella. - Auta a dopravní prostředky
I still love the old Packards. Thanks guys.
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR SAVING A PACKARD!!! SHE IS BEAUTIFUL!!!!! THANK YOU FOR GIVING HER A SECOND LEASE ON LIFE!!!! GREAT VIDEO & THANKS FOR SHARING!!!
This car MUST drive again...it's a jewel.
The body shop sign in the trunk! You gotta be f/n kidding me. The universe went all in on this one. This one needs to move up the list. :)
Had to come back here after watching the straight eight showdown.
You know you are doing god's work when your 'new' car has to be loaded with a forklift.
It's so great to see a car resurrected from the field of dreams!
Thanks for saving these old cars. Even the orphans deserve love!
Hey, thanks for checking it out! Lets save everything we can! Cheers from me and Stel.
Too bad forkliff damaged both left doors. I have built so many packard 8"s. Buick wheels will fit
Now, having seen the Straight 8 challenge, it's fun to look at how this Packard arrived at CWM.
It just sucks to see cars get forked.
I am going to have to buy a 1953 Packard. That's a great car for restoration.
I never tire of watching this episode. It was a great car and still can be. The race between it and the Buick a few years back was absolutely epic. It would be a great daily driver project
It's nice to see people who care about these classics
Make that old Packard a driver. She deserves it. I'd like to see you do to it what you have been doing to your Frazier. I love your channel. Making them run but keeping their character. Gun and guitar collectors have been collecting like this for decades; They want them to work but they don't want the wear and "patina" poshished away. Love it.
+siegel197866 Hi, thanks for the note. Glad you liked the Frazer project... almost finished now! I would like to put this Packard together and drive it, but I think it's probably a little too rough to be worth trying. The engine is seized and there is a lot of rust and old collision damage to sort out. I am kind of hoping to find another one and combine the two to make one good one. I am happy to hear from others who appreciate letting a car "wear" its history... Cheers from me and Stella!
You have done a truly wonderful thing
Love the old episodes! Lol back when Dean had more hair.
That is one lucky Packard! Thanks again!
Great save and video!
there's a special pleasure to bring old cars back to life!
This needs to be a runner!
And four and a half years later it's brought back to life!!
How did i miss this?!?! A Packard Straight 8!!
On the strength of watching this video I went out and bought a 51 Packard 200. The only thing is I live in Yorkshire, England. This means undoubtedly I am the guy with 'the Packard' !!!! Seen as I will need at least an airplane to see another, please please please can you make another video on your Clipper ?
Many thanks guys. Keep the good work up !
Congrats on buying the Packard!
good cars, trend setting in many ways, many good things from this orphan car companies, thanks for the video.
Just came across this old episode. Love how raw your channel was and still is! You should get the ol girl running again
A big thank you for saving the old girl.
Future Star of the "Straight-8 Showdown" These were built with such high quality. that upholstery must have been incredible brand new. The whole damn car for that matter, eh!
You guys are doing the world a tremendous favor saving these cars. I've been to the Packard plant (it's still standing in Detroit) and the Packard Proving grounds (the building has been restored and is popular place for car shows) in Shelby Township Mi. Awesome old cars.
+Junk Man Hey, thanks! Glad you agree that someone needs to save this stuff...

Well done guys for saving one of these good looking old Packards ... I hear they would sometimes suffer a broken valve if over revved , this might be why the motor is seized - not too difficult to fix if so , and I hope you get it running again soon . It is a real Find !
Uuh, nice car. Please restore it in your special kind of way and make it a runner and a stopper! I'm looking forward to see more of this terrific automobil.
Learned to drive in my father's '53' Clipper. Glad to see you resurrecting her. That big old "straight eight" was some engine.
1961>>3 went to school in 57 Packard, power windows and leather seats.Friend's mother's car, dad drove a TR3 Triumph. Very cool people. Thanks for saving another oldie !!!
Hey thanks for the note and for checking out the vid... More oldies on the way soon here!
My first car was a 1946 Packard Clipper. Packard used the same top grill bar design for about five decades. Also look for the hexagon hubcaps. The spear chrome up in front is another Packard styling feature.
Whoa a Featureman comment in the wild! Keep on being you!
Fantastic.
Really glad you are saving this Packard, good job
Thanks! I think that this one was worth keeping out of the crusher...
It will take a lot of work but its a good starting point. Packards are always worthwhile restorations. The more running Packards, the better!
Whatever you do man, get this car going; you don't see many of these old packards, and this one has so much character already, plus the body shop sign just completes it :D
LRCVWDude Well, we will certainly give it a try this summer!
I always share your videos on my FB page.
love those packards, a bit stodgy but first class for sure. wish i had a neighbor bringing me cars like yours! but seriously guys, i live in arizona and always find well preserved beauties. found a 58 edsel sedan with 43,000 miles yesterday! no, im not bullshitting you.
I love this car, would love it even more restored, but it would cost a ton of money. My '54 Olds Super 88 Holiday Coupe used 760-15 size tires. Back then I got only 12K or so miles before new tires or recaps were needed. Thanks for showing this baby right off the fork lift. My family owned a 1941 Pontiac black fast back tudor with flat head straight eight similar to the Packard. I cut my teeth on that car, painted the wheels red and tires white with special rubber based "whitewall" paint available back then.
Fantastic car, guys. Looking forward to seeing it run again. Good luck with it!
Thank you for saving the old beauty. Please take good care of her.
What a beautiful car! Congratulations for getting it and saving it from the crusher!! I'm impressed!
Man you guys are what I wish I could do right now. I always wanted to save the retro era of America
+Mr. Gamer Hey, glad you liked it; cheers!
Right back to ya. Good luck in the future.
Jeff Hull--- I worked in Amesbury mass and near the old factory and older home part of town, I found a 1956 Packard Clipper on a road I would walk down from my one of my first jobs in 1987 and wanted to buy it so bad. I never did, and it got hauled away and I never saw that happen. It was in good solid condition, no rust, it had clipper (tall Ships) embossed on it's original hubcaps still also. The Engine was missing the whole top of it though, including the Carborator. The License plate on the car, was dated 1972. Too bad I let that slip away!
love your place not a junkyard for me but heaven for sure
thank God for saving the old Packard...who the hell in the right mind would want to crush it !??
i think she is a beauty and hope to see a video of it running and driving again.
A guy not too far from me has a 54 packard , it sat for 23 years not running and he got it running , the old gal sounded good when she finally fired on all 8 cylinders , and it moved under its own power too . I was very impressed . His video is here on you tube too , his channel is hotrodscars .
Love your videos! I can truly appreciate what you are doing! I hate to see history being crushed, one car at a time!
Hey, thanks for watching them! Cheers!
Sooo cool this is the kind of stories you hear on TV!
God bless you, you saved a great relic of the past! Now, to get her back on her wheels...
Congratulations! You're now a 'Man Who Owns One'!
Thank you for saving all these treasures. These Packards were great cars with straight eight engines that ran like Swiss watches.
Love the old girl! Nice to see her still in one piece and away from the fate of the crusher!
And the old signs on the trunk such a great find, and saving this beautiful rare classic,
a 1951 Packard hood....just a little gas and voila! my dad had a Packard in the 30s.
Back in the day Packards were the best cars in the world.I love them. Good on gas consumption too.lol!
WOW !! I LOVED THE HIGH FLOW FISHING HAT ON THE CARBURETOR....THEY WERE WAY AHEAD OF THEIR TIME IN 1953 !
I'd love to see a will it run series on this beauty.
Oh! Well, it looks like a few other people would, too! I guess I'd better try when the weather warms up...
You know you've made it when you can say you're 'A Packard Man'!
I know, right? That kind of thing used to mean something. Now anyone can finance a Cadillac on garbage credit for 10 years, haha. Cars are just meaningless debt-instruments now, with zero intrinsic value.
coldwarmotors
Yea, sucks frankly. Which is why I like seeing you get the old dogs barking again. I'm an Olds man myself ;-)
To think that this is now a race-winning car!
Packard Straight 8 , wow
wow nice can't wait to see you getting her back in running order again
Thanks! We'll start on it in the spring, I hope...
It's amazing that classic cars this old that are still around even have to worry about the crusher. How can anyone even contemplate crushing a 50-70 year old car even if it is only halfway intact? I personally saw a 1951-ish Kaiser sedan at the scrap/recycling yard(not even an auto salvage yard) about 3 years ago, not very rusty and it had been fairly complete and straight, but it was already too late to save it. I just couldn't believe whoever sold it to the scrap yard couldn't find somebody who would have wanted to buy it for more than they got for it for scrap. Add the demise of these survivors to the ones that have been destroyed by being "bagged", "chopped", "slammed", "tubbed", "gas monkeyed" etc., and it's a wonder there are any classic cars still around at all.
That straight 8 is a great motor and won't take much to fire up. Good luck
That was so cool when you lifted up the air cleaner and there was a old hat covering up the carburetor 😊
You're doing God's work. This was a peach back in the day. Fully loaded this would have electric antenna, 327 CID engine, wonderbar radio, PS,PB, auto trans.
Wonderful intro to a classic Packard Clipper saved from the crusher. I hope to see follow up videos on this Packard to see the progress of developments of a finished Clipper. Nice Video, Gentlemen! Thanks!
Hope to see and hear this Packard run and drive , thanks for saving it .
WoW Packard ask the man who owns one! Great Save wish I could help you, wish you were my Neighbor! love how you save cars!
Kinseydsp bravo !:)
I absolutely love that car , seriously nice buy ! . I know after a pointy or two , it will look amazing . Please ,,, by all means , keep the videos coming . much appreciated by Ray in Pa. U.S.A.
Hey, thanks Ray! Glad you like the ol' girl. She's rough and dirty, but I think we will probably have to at least try to get her going again. A pointy one to you, too!
i had a 53 once ! i bet it's american made !
That's too funny you found a hat under the air-cleaner. Haha,
At least it ain't a wreck! I love it!
Thanks! Me too!
You're definitely savouring that Packard. It's a nice looking car for sure.
Keep the videos coming I'm a big fan of what you guys do. I look forward to your next videos of Will It Run.
MOBILE COLLEGE Thanks! More on the way soon!
fantastic..im really impressed how complete it is .... no massive holes and no road salt for 40 yrs or more
What a beauty, many thanks for your efforts saving these diamonds.
Hey thanks, and thanks for checking it out...
Well bless your heart for saving her . I wish that we could save all of them ...
thats a fantastic packard. would be cool to see you guys try to get it going. your vids are great, thank you.
Hey, thanks for watching this stuff! Glad you like the ol' Packard. Sounds like we'll have to at least try to get her going in the summer.
sounds like a plan!
Really awesome find! I hope you continue this project.
Glad you saved it .Thumbs up .
Thanks! Cheers from us at CWMC.
Video 2 needs to come out soon!!
Well... it'll have to wait a few months for sure... it's way too cold and the Packard is snowed in 'til spring! I'll definitely do something with this one though. Thanks for checking out the video!
These independent makes are right up Corvette Ben's alley.
Hey Scott , was there an update with the packard ?? What a neat car
What a beautiful car,I can hardly wait to see the Packard when she's all done,I love watching your show, and I am also a proud owner of a classic car,a 1966 dodge charger, all matching numbers with a 361 engine, and the original certification card, that came with the car,I love watching you guys restoring the old cars
And Owners manual 😊
You are correct about that hood. It appears to be a 1951 hood. I actually like that hood on that car. Thank you for sharing your great experiences thanks for saving these artworks of yesteryear.
Right on! Love to see new faces in the CWMC fleet! Definitely get that awesome flathead straight 8 unstuck and running again!
Thanks for checking it out! We'll definitely see more of this one in the spring...
Another nice score Scott! Hopefully some of those bias tires I sourced for you will work on this old girl!
Thanks Doug! I can definitely see a set of them ending up on this sweetie!
Excellent! I really hope you can get that straight 8 going again. It's really quite remarkable this car has survived so well, here in the UK it would just be a patch of rust coloured ground.
Since it is starting to get nice out we are all expecting another Packard video! :)
Bryce Sheedy Right! I suppose we'd better get the head off and see what we're up against... I'll definitely do an update video soon! Cheers.
Be prepared to unbolt about 40 head bolts... fun haha
I think this is my favorite car out of all the ones you have. I just love the styling and attention to detail everywhere. "Ask the man who owns one." Hah that's a great slogan. I remember Jay Lenno saying that when he was giving a tour of one of his Packards. I think I remember from his video too that these were extremely high quality cars.
Toyota also has the "Ask someone who drives one." or did have that motto several years ago I remember from commercials. For these companies to be saying things like this, you know they care about their product and put so much time and effort into it that it will prove itself and needs to special advertising. I think they worked really hard on making that Packard a nice car.
If you don't have too many projects going on right now :) maybe you could work on that Packard next. It seems to be in really good shape.
what a beauty! looks pretty much complete. i love those small fins on the back. very nice find. get it running again!
Beautiful old car, Cold War. Just awesome. Would love to have the time, and equipment and property to go and get some old gems like this.
Jesse Hancock salvage yards r like children u have 2 take care of them
Thank you for saving American history
Im amazed at how minimal rust it has! This car wasn't outdoors for a long time. For a person that can restore it it would be an interesting project. Wont be cheap because packard parts are hard to find. Can only pull them from a donor car.
I love these early '50s conservative sedans,Packards and Imperials on top of my list! glad someone is saving them! (I did also note the "JC Whitney" seat covers, right before you guys said it!) Who didn't grow up with those!
I so enjoyed this Packard video that I decided to look on ebay, in order to see what other 1953 Packard Clippers may look like. To my surprise; there is one 1953 Packard Clipper being offered on ebay; approximately 45 miles from my house. The cool thing is that it is the same color green, as is your you tube find!!! I may start bidding on it.
BTW, I watched as many of your you tube videos, as I could find yesterday, Eh.
Ol Chuck, in Mesa, AZ
Hey, thanks a lot for checking out the videos! All the best from us here at CWMC, eh? Cheers!
Hello from California. I have inherited my dad's baby, a 1953 Packard Clipper Sportsman. He has since passed on, but in his things he had what looks very similar to a 1954 Packard front grill, but not quite it. I have been searching to find out what car this grill belongs to. I was wondering if I could email a pic to you or someone on your site to see if anyone recognizes it. My email is surelyblessed2@gmail. Thanks for any assistance, Nita
In the movie the Godfather I, a 1953 Packard Limosine model was used where Michael, Kay & their son Anthony arrived at the Corleone estate in the movie, later a 1950 Packard Hearse was used for Don Vito Corleone's funeral. My late maternal grandfather had a 1937 Packard, my late mother & aunr called it the Queen Mary. My late aunt took effect her drivers test in that Packard, when the time came for my aunt to park the car, she had a hard time parking, then the New York State DMV tester tried to park it, he too also had tried to park it, he also had a hard time trying to park it. The DMV tester in Buffalo told my grandfather that he better get rid of it.
Man I'm needing more of the Packard!
Great stuff as usual - thanks.
Wow,. It has come so far!
Thunderbolt!!! Spring is here. Nice save!
My first car was a 1955 Packsrd Patrician.
My first trip to the USA in '08 and i was in Iowa when I heard my first US train horn like at 09:02. I have heard that sound so many times on the movies but to hear it for the first time in real life was so cool..PS My dad had a '34 Packard straight 8 in the early 50s down in Australia...
