I belong to a very religious family. I m a kind of woman who stays home and takes care of kids and husband when he is the bread winner but my husband is the one who I remember tied my shoe laces in front of everyone when I was holding the baby. This doesn’t make any of us superior. We appreciate each other.

Absolutely. All the supposed "work" she listed and accepted that she herself doesn't do it, there are women who have to do it as compulsion. Who have to carry children sometimes even earn yet look after their husbands like a babysitter. And yet abused, violated and even killed for it ( woman murdered for not making hot Sehri for husband) Miss Kanwal just put herself on a pedestial and lectured about something she has no clue about, put her in that life she wouldn't survive a day.

  • @drmalnoor
    @drmalnoor Před 2 lety +90

I often enjoy A&H's conversations, but this episode had me cringing at points:
1.Hassan's determination to lead the conversation on these sensitive issues around gender, gender roles and their projection in Pakistani TV hits at the core of the issue Amna was patiently trying to explain to him: Patriarchy is so deeply embedded in us that even the most well meaning male (like H) felt compelled to mansplain lopsided power dynamics and make excuses for it. Listen first please :)
    2. Sadaf and Shahroz's demonizing feminism and liberalism as Amna says, is a conscious white-washing of their image. Private life aside, Sadaf doesn't understand or appreciate the privileges afforded to her by Feminism - she's a successful model in a conservative country like Pakistan and able to marry happily *despite* her unconventional work is because women like Vinnie, Nadia H and Iraj made it "respectable" and therefore possible! That's FEMINISM. Respect it, it's given her money and fame and social mobility! Hassan, your making allowances for her immature pandering was not cool, some lines have to be drawn. Celebrity status doesn't absolve anyone. What you allow will continue.
    3. Lapata: Hassan announced at the outset that the scene didn't feel like the big deal. You know why? Because the scene was playful and therefore felt harmless - which is the trap. A women publicly and casually lying about sexual harassment is really extreme. Why? Because the stigma is going to be worse for her - it's more likely to get her INTO trouble than OUT of it. In the last episode of SH, Hassan mentioned how the kidnapping scene in Dunk could have been cut out because it didn't service the plot and was tone-deaf, why should that not apply to Lapata?
    4. Hassan please don't throw imaginary stats around: "90% of women" "80% of men." Made up numbers don't validate your point :)
Apologies if this felt stern, I write this with the kindest intent, we are all learning and in this together. Hassan, I usually enjoy your analysis greatly! Thank you and Amna for your hard work. You guys are fab! I wish production houses would push more content for a kinder, more tolerant and nuanced Pakistan.

My mother went the extra mile to ensure her sons knew how to cook, clean, hemming, sewing on buttons, launder, change nappies( we had a big family); and prepare baby bottle, and baby feed! She did this to ensure that none of the wives of my brothers would have to forfeit their rights to a career, because the male is incompetent in household duties! The girls were also taught DIY, and other skills erroneously associated with ‘ men’s’ forte, , like changing a tyres, putting oil in the car, etc! Both my brothers are excellent and creative cooks too! We also had the first female aeronautical engineer in our family, who is also competent in her household skills! We all can be trained in doing all sorts of life skill work, most Pakistani mothers ‘cripple’ their sons by spoiling them!

Does she mean mard ka darja buland hai because wo kamata hai family paalta hai? What even? Biwi bhi ussi ke bachay paalti hai un ki tarbiyat kerti hai. Us ke kamaye huey paisy ko sahi jaga utilise kerti hai. What does she even mean by mard ka darja buland hai. Dono ka darja barabar hota hai. Darja buland honay ka mtlb hota hai ke agar wo kuch ghalat ker jae you cant question it because he is not answerable to you because us ka darja buland hai. Ya darja buland honay ka mtlb hai wo zayada respect deserve kerta hai aur biwi nahi kerti? Issi soch ne aj society ko is jaga pohanchaya hai. Ke femicide is now a routine just because females consider themselves kam darjay ki-to men.

And by normalizing this stance that women casually lie about harassment you are taking away the only power that the victim has (truth). When you establish this narrative that most women lie about harassment maybe the girl who wanted to publicly name or shame her harasser will stay silent because no one will believe her without proofs

I have never come across any one including Iffat Omer forcing any one or imposing their point of views. They are vocal about their opinions and what they think is right or wrong. Human is an epitome of mistakes so they can also sometimes do something wrong, say something which might not be right according to others but that does not mean they are imposing anything.
The Liberals group as you call it is vocal about women rights and treatment. This is what most people cannot accept since women are raising their voices in a country where we are taught to keep our mouths shut no matter what is happening to us.
Being a women in this society is harder than you think it is. You can not even walk independently on the streets with out the thought of men staring you from all around no matter how covered you are. There is a constant fear what might happen when we go out, we can be kidnapped, raped, harrassed, touched, catcalled, or beheaded. This is the anxiety that every Pakistani women goes through everyday after hearing what is happening around us.

I, a 21 year old not even a celebrity or influencer knows what to say to blow up the internet and get people start talking about me. Celebrities like Sadaf and Shahroz are much older, working in this industry for many years so it is not possible for them to not know what they are saying and start massive debate.
However, a comment was made publicly about what women should do and what they should not. It is not a private drawing room chat that no one knew about, it was an interview on a national television channel. This is how a society grows by debating about our point of views and right or wrong. Thus, I don't think there is any judgement here. They clearly stated if Sadaf said what she wants to do it would have been okay but she had a tone which said that every women should be doing this, which is not correct.

The level of so-called "sensitivity" is for sure downright abysmal and absurd to even comprehend. Get a life, people! Amna wanted to wear a piece of clothing she liked, and she wore it. She DOES NOT need to justify her choices to anyone. People were even having issues with Aima Baig wearing a certain thing on her bare arm on her engagement. People also had issues with outfits at the LSA. The same people had issues with a whole lot of other things. What constructive do they make out of it though? Apna imaan dekhein, do right as per your conscience, rather than preaching others. And, FFS, stop being overly sensitive, esp with trivial things like someone's choice of clothes. If this representation of such serious issue ends up invalidating the actual event of harassment of even of a single girl, it is damaging enough in my opinion and in our messed up society, it does have that potential. This is a discussion that has just begun in our misogynistic society and we should refrain from showing anything that can make it even more difficult for the victims to come forward, thinking that there is a possibility of them being called a liar 😢so this perticular scene in Laapata and the whole plot of Dunk was a bad idea that will effect many lives

    1) Sehmat nhi Urdu mai 'Mutafiq' hota hai.
    2) Again, I'll quote The Devil Judge ongoing kdrama. There's a female mainstream character Sun-ah which uses her sexual abuse as a blackmail against the culprit to up her status. Now, she's an evil, manipulative person obsessed with becoming privileged and there's a whole back story about her thefts, dubious deaths of family and thinking. You can't implement it on every other women or generalize. It's 'one' person. Similarly for that Lapata scene, it's her character. She's a liar and negative manipulative person. To show in a 100 dramas every female character been casually slapped is different from showing a psychopathic character in one drama. Please, start to differentiate maturely.

My question is, don't statements like this form the core of "anti-feminism" stance? I mean these statements are uttered by people who want women to be confined to the house (they argue that women bodies are best created for only a certain set of tasks like cooking, cleaning, rearing children, etc.; hence they should stick to these and not bother about "wordily" affairs).
I feel that all women and men (including Amna & Hasan) in Pakistan say they believe in feminism while in reality they are practicing something different in everyday lives.
Fun question for Hasan: Who arranges for your meals and makes sure the laundry in your house is done? Its easy to support feminism in a Haute Bite session, but the values we preach, how much of those are we actually practicing?

We have clearly established after the Noor Mukadam case that a woman has to get beheaded to get heard.
