I am so impressed! Also, a tip for staying cool in this costume in the future: Make a simple vest out of thin, breathable fabric that has little pockets in it and buy some of those ice packs that you snap to activate. Activate the ice packs and put them in the pockets, then put the costume on over the vest. You can also make little leg bands that will hold them in as well. That way you aren’t risking overheating when you wear it.

As a fursuit maker myself, I'm SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO impressed by that!!! You did an amazing job- especially with the wings. Also, if you're looking for a feet pattern that doesn't stick out too much, maybe consider making sock paws or normal shoe paws- the talons don't have to stick out too much if you don't want them to (espically if you do sock paws), and there are tons of good patterns out there. Also also, make sure you're disinfecting the suit after you wear it!!! Usually you can just used watered down isopropyl alchohol and spray it into the head, body, wings, e.t.c. But the reason you have to disinfect is because you are sweating sooo much lol. And if you don't clean the suit properly (btw the body suit should be fine to put in the wash- just don't put it in the dryer), it's going to get super gross, smell weird, and look weird. This goes for the head as well- you need to spray disinfectant almost every time you wear it to prevent it smelling weird and the growing of mold (epically if it's not lined or your not wearing a balaclava). Also make sure you're brushing the fur to keep the boi lookin nice :D Also also, you can get some under armor to wear that's sweat wicking that'll help you keep cool and help keep sweat out of the suit more; I don't have a fullsuit, but I know that helps a lot of fursuiters stay cool and keep the suits cleaner.
Anyway you did a great job :D)

Just finished the video- as a fursuit maker and furry, this is a really really good first "fursuit" cosplay! Especially considering that you did a full bodysuit + wings! Hyped for all of your future projects! :D (P.S. if you're ever curious about how to do a furry-ish project again, feel free to DM a maker within the community! There are certain types of fur trimming that could help fur look more like feathers, if that was something you got stuck on! We're always glad to help out :D!)

The crafter will laugh at you if you doubt its power. It will prove you wrong. It will sew through ANYTHING.
My old band teacher got it to make a new reindeer suit for a holiday photobooth. He told me it sewed through EVERYTHING, that it didnt even WHINE. He used it to sew the head together since the last one he made had issues with the head panels coming apart. He has never had a sewing machine that could do that. He used THICK ass foam for the head and it laughed at him thinking that would be a challenge for it, and happily sewed through it.

I just wanna say, I love this so much! Not only is the cosplay AMAZING, you were also so incredibly respectful and encouraging about furries! I'm not a furry, but my best friend is and I'm just so grateful for how supportive of the community you've been. So many people have such a negative and toxic view of furries and it's such a breath of fresh air to see someone who recognizes the amazing aspects of the furry community.
Ps. For the question of if you're a furry now, that's up to you! Personally I believe that it's up to the individual to decide if they consider themselves a furry. There are tons of people who make and wear fur suits but don't consider themselves furries. There's also tons of people who don't have a fursona that are still furries. Either way is totally cool! Heck, tons of furries still consider furry allies to be part of the community so there's no pressure to say you're a furry just to be part of the community!
Sorry for the mini essay, I hope it made sense and was easy to read!

aaa this is such a good suit, so proud of you for dipping your toes into the fursuit craft!! I would have gone with follow-me eyes instead of puppet eyes if you want something dynamic on such big eyeballs, but I think all put together it still works well (if you make the eyes concave behind the ornament domes they will give the illusion of following you around, i suggest looking up fursuits with follow-me eyes for more info and examples).
the body and clothing are excellent though, your craftsmanship on the harness is downright masterful too, the tricks you used to keep the thing rigid worked really well and turned out looking really crisp.
One note on the head, using metal and wires so close to your face is kinda scary, I would avoid doing it as much as possible, especially on a foam base. Falling or collisions in that head could cut or poke you pretty bad. I only really see flat metal pieces like that used in constructing resin or bike helmet heads (or else in buyer beware articles) so please be careful!

    • @riverartstudios5481
      @riverartstudios5481 Před 11 měsíci +5

I agree with the eyes thing; follow me eyes are great for the moving illusion, but also because you can see through them rather than having to look through the beak, which is what most fursuit makers do.

I feel like a lot of what you’ve expressed here in this video- how working on the build made you feel, how you felt about attending the con in costume- all of it
It really encapsulates the *good* parts of the community. It’s all about self expression, putting yourself in character and having a fun time. It was nice to see all of this shine through in a *cosplay* build video of all places! Shows that the communities really aren’t that different at all. Some people wear faux leather, suede and the likes and others wear couch foam and faux fur xD

Tulin is great, and that look so fun! And so are accurate character cosplays! My Lucario blue fur was close to $30 a yard, so you did pretty good. And yes, you are correct that different fur piles are different to work with. For Lucario's fluffy torso, I have 2" pile fur, and my regular machine wouldn't use it, so I had to use my fully metal heavy-duty vintage machine, and so much brushing and picking the seams! If you want truly invisible fur seams, use a long stitch first, then brush it, and then go over it with a smaller stitch so less of the pile gets stuck. But honestly, it's pretty forgiving. I also learned that wearing a mask or face cover when cutting fur is helpful so it doesn't end up in your face.

Suggestion for anyone having issues with the fur pile getting eaten by seams: if you brush the fur away from the edge of the fabric and then clip or pin it in place like that then less of it will be stuck, and just a little brush can hide the seam entirely.
It's easier if you do the initial sewing by hand because you can push each section out of the way as you go, but it will obviously take longer, so depends on your circumstances.
I have also seen fursuit makers use blanket stitch, and copied this for my own creations. I guess it has the benefit of finishing the seam at the same time, but I don't know the actual purpose for it. I reckon an overlocker might do a neat job for making a fur bodysuit as long as you brushed the fur pile inwards before so it doesn't get cropped. 🤔

If you have good ventilation, you can also use a soldering iron with a cutting blade to cut (well, melt) there will be basically no shedding and it seals it so the edge is stronger. Works on plastic type fabric, so polyester velvet too. It will discolor the very edge, so you cant have any exposed edging especially with white fabric.

Tip for setting grommets and snaps WITHOUT breaking your table:
-make sure your table is sturdy. I like to use a kitchen counter since they are very sturdy. But a well constructed table or desk will work too.
-Get yourself a block of wood. Make sure it’s decently thick(at least 1in) and about 5in long. But just use what you can find easily. The important thing is that the board has larger surface area than your grommet/snap.
    - you can now set your grommets and snaps on top of the board on your table.
The board will take the force applied to the grommet from the hammer and distribute it across the surface of board, reducing the stress that gets applied to your table.
This trick can also be done on your floor if your still worried about your table. I’ve only tried this on carpeted floor though, so if you have hard floors I’d recommend doing this on top of a rug to provide an extra layer of protection.
    Happy Crafting! :D)))

i’ve been super on the fence about making my own cosplay but you know what, if you can become the bird, the boy, then i can at least make a weapon that’s basically just a rectangle with a trigger.

Thank you for blessing me with an hour long video to power through handsewing the feet on an anthro bug doll… this is the longest I’ve worked nonstop on a project at 4 days or something :sob: but it’s for a buddy I’m visiting so I’m channeling your energy to get it done in time

this honestly makes me wanna try to make a rito cosplay in the future because i also love Tulin very much as well as a lot of the other rito 😊

Watching your videos always makes me excited to work on my own projects. Im so often scared to continue for fear of making mistakes but you show how those happen to the most skilled of cosplayers too and that its ok. That its alright to struggle with new skills or materials. Its so comforting and helps give me courage to try things I havent done before.

I usually hand-sew fur stuff, and pushing the fur through before you sew makes a huge difference compared to the brush it through afterwards. I've done it with a machine as well, using the clips and pushing the fur through works really well too

Tulin is legit one of my favorite characters and my friend also love him. I don't play ToTK (still slowly going thru BoTW), but according to my friend, he's super helpful and nice. He's so adorable and you did amazingly bringing him to life :3

I loved this video, i tend to be pretty harsh with myself when my cosplays don't look exactly like the character, but this made me realize that that it's not the exact same, doesn't mean that it's not cool, thank you for always being an inspiration for me❤

Gurl congrats on that Bernina and partnership! That's so sick! Obvi the cosplay is fab as always 😋
Side note: another zipper end method
At a sewing job I had, we often used separating zippers. For the end of the zipper, we would use a small vinyl rectangle, fold it over the end of the zipper, and stitch that in with the top stitch that attaches the zipper.

MAN THIS MACHINE IS INSANE!!! I immediately showed it to my mother, she has been a fashion designer, seamstress, cutter for many years, and she immediately told me that now we are saving up for this sewing machine and overlock. I'm sitting rejoicing.
Really happy for you and your work! This is insane and i'm sure things will get cooler

And I live in a pretty small populated country *5 million* and
I was so hyped!! I am also a cat owner lol 😂. And I also make Fursuits as well, and that Tulin is SO good! I LOVE the wings.

watching you do the legs I feel immensely happy that the pattern I have for current project which is my dnd character that's basically a griffon walking on hindlegs only had two pieces per leg.
But then again, they are just regular old digitigrade legs (since feline shaped) and not birb legs. Oh and along the front and back seams of each leg there are a bunch of darts. So different approach.

That came out really well! The box cutter trick works much better for more realistic faux fur, it has a thicker, stiffer backing. Scissors are definitely the more feasible way for the kind of fabric you used.
