Honestly I really wanted to sew a pair of pants, and I also wanted to serve up my favorite advice for leveling up your craftsmanship, so I did both at the same time! Cosplaying for twelve years has given me a lot of mistakes to learn from and a lot of sewing techniques I wish I'd figured out years ago- and I am here to save you that time and heartache by having a lot of feelings about interfacing, necromancers, and google!

Hey! I'm Lizard Leigh! I'm a designer who turns abstract concepts into obsessively constructed cosplays. This channel is where you'll find every weird DIY cosplay build, shared with you in a detailed breakdown or build log! And when I say that, I really mean.... flying by the seat of my pants to make it work and catch that cosplay vibe lmfao.
We're building the airplane as we fly it y'all, and having fun getting WEIRD with original cosplay.

notebooks (like all commercial paper) actually have grain lines too! One of the first things I learned in my bookbinding apprenticeship was how to identify them because no matter how good your craftsmanship is if the grain of your paper and cardboard is wrong the pages will pucker and the cover tends to bend, this gets even worse if the grain of the cardboard and the paper you used to cover it do not match up. This is also the reason why I can not just use your fancy aquarell paper, fold it in half and sew those signature (=sheets) together, the grain would be wrong, my paper starting out needs to be either double the final size in short grain (which paper not specifically made for bookbinding is, like, never) or four times the final size of the book you want in order to be usable. Yes, I do get that question a lot when making custom sketchbooks since people want their favourite paper kind for those and I then need to try my best to source the biggest possible sheets of it.

Thank you for the great advice! I'm a total beginner sewer, but I feel like most of the advice applies to any kind of craft. The bit about choosing fabric reminds me of something I learned in a digital artist's video. She talked about how when she was young she got into art by drawing her favorite anime characters and the like, but how by college she felt like she needed to do "serious art." The thing she said I'll always remember was "I was improving faster when I was drawing for fun, because I was drawing all the time." So important (but difficult) to not let the spark and passion that encouraged you to learn s a skill not die out. Looking forward to more videos from you!
Yes!! I totally agree, so much good advice for one craft can easily apply to another one, and I think that advice of working with what you love is SO so key!

I recently started sewing and am considering dipping my toe into some cosplay pieces, but my ambition is much higher than my current skill! My mum will gift me a sewing machine and sewing lessons this Christmas. It's been years since I last touched the sewing machine. I'm getting really hyped up rn and it was just fun to watch you share what you love and even though I can't work with most of the advice here yet I'm sure it'll save me lots of time later when I struggle to just come back here. Mmmm.. my best advice is.. 1. Enjoy the process.. don't hurry too fast just because you want the garment in the end. So I agree with taking the long road is the short road! Remember this piece of clothing will be with you for YEARS.. so. .you can take a bit of extra time right? And 2. Don't dispair when you see other cosplayers/historial dress makers. .that can afford more/better materials then you.. or even worse..machines. Don't kill yourself for not being able to make that huge mega embroidery that others did.. because they most likely (not always) did not either but could afford a REALLY expensive but great machine to do it for them. One day. .that will be you too! You will get that machine one day!
I came to this channel because I have been wanting to revamp my dark vibes forest witch costume and I saw your lavender town witch cosplay shorts. I have been slowly navigating the sewing world and have learned about grain and what projects you can and can't use certain fabrics for (often the hard way). This is the first time I have heard "fiber" and "finish"! You literally just made everything click together in my mind. I love this channel, please continue :D

Finally have the time to actually watching your videos and it has been a delightful time thus far! Can confirm this video increases sewing speed, my backstitching was 60% (if I've remembered how proportions work correctly) faster than usual while watching. Excellent and kind advice!

YESSSSSSSSSS I am SO excited to digest some of these tips when I start my next big project at the end of October!
I will say, to your interfacing/layering point, I have found some more success with interlining and padstitching/permanent basting than interfacing on some fabrics. Mostly because I HATE the buckling effect that some interfacing gives to widgy, floppy fabrics, whereas adhering a lining layer with some tiny wee stitches can be infinitely controlled and modified until the final effect is nice and smooth. I wish I was as wizardly with an iron as you are to get a smooth adherence with my interfacing!!
I've got some projects in the pipeline for early next year that are going to get me into padstitching and I'm EXCITED about it!! It's such a great technique and I've just never had the chance to use it!

Suggestions: I'd love to see chapter markings in the description that link to each tip! I have ADHD and some of the title screens went by too fast to read. Having them written out somewhere else + maybe lingering on the titles a little longer would make it more accessible imo. Literally loved everything else about this tho

omg lizard youtube! omg ianthe! aaaahhhhhhh!!!!!! 😍😍 if you're looking for any more video ideas, i'd love to know how you decide on non-structural details, like the lacing on the sides of these pants. like i'm good on the basics but all my cosplay projects end up being kinda basic and i never know what else to do with them other than adding some trim along the edge. but also i am now inspired to maybe actually work on my obscure CR cosplay this weekend :D
That's a fantastic suggestion for a video!! In this specific case, the lacing details were included in the pattern, but other things like the little studs on the waistband and the front gold stripe were things I added. I'll definitely think about how that could be a video 🤔
