First year clown student here! Mehron is our #1 company for clown makeup (at least for my college), and I’d like to add some tips. If you’re expecting to be out and about in makeup, wear sunscreen under the makeup. It does help! Setting powder is integral! There’s a brand we use (forgot the name) they keeps the makeup on even if you want to go swimming (why you want to go swimming as a clown is beyond me), but nonetheless is integral if you sweat. That’s all!
Edit: yeah clown makeup is thick and you’ll definitely feel it!

I worked as a professional face and body painter for years and I recommend using a Kabuki brush to apply and blend paint! It gives an effect very close to air brush and the secret to it is to wet your paint cake with a spray bottle and lightly wet your Kabuki brush with the spray bottle. Layering won't be necessary at all. Also, translucent powders and setting sprays are your friends when working with Mehron Paradise. And my favorite paint brand is Diamond FX.

When I was in middle school, I was the Wicked Witch of the West for the school musical. My mom was in theater her whole life, so she knew a weird way to do colored makeup that wouldn't come off as you sweated under the heat of theater lights, kool-aid! She made a colored paste out of kool-aid and water and semi-dyed my skin. I was green for one day after, but it was PERFECT and the tin man was super jealous since my skin just felt like normal skin and he was caked in thick silver makeup. 😂

Make yourself grey smooshing the colours. Doing this I have never had to scrub my skin, and can get completely paint free in a max 2 latherings. Even with the dreaded staining aqua!

Using colored foundation can really help too, they can be more expensive tho. Sunset Makeup has a great collection.
OH also there’s another company I forgot the name of it, but they have a lil fox mask thingy on their paint containers and the coverage looks great too.
Also side note: I found out about this neck fan thing that you can use to cool down. And oh god it sound revolutionary, more people need to know about this. I think it’s an absolute need for cosplayers (especially fur suits). It’s a tad bit expensive, but it frees up your hands, and prevents you from dying from heat exhaustion so I think it’s a nice investment :3

As someone who works in a store that sells these sorts of products, here’s my two cents on water activated makeup. Get mehron’s barrier spray and spray it on both before and after you do your makeup. Also if you activate the makeup with a mixing liquid (Ben bye’s liquiset is great for this) instead of water it won’t go all funky if your face gets wet later. Another tip is the brand Diamond FX. HIGHLY comparable to mehron paradise (as in I can’t tell a difference at all) but generally cheaper in price. As much as I love Ben nye as a company I say steer clear of their water activated makeup because it’s super chalky and patchy.

Some tips as a pro MUA and former Homestuck and Adventure Time cosplayer: use a heavy moisturizer before body or face paint! Some colors will stain regardless, but this will help it not stain AS much. Also, water activated paints are considered makeup! You were correct about not putting the paint too close to your eyes though. Kyrolan aquacolor is also an accessible option with tons of colors for water based paints.
PLEASE invest in a good body paint sealer! Don’t rely on makeup setting spray. Ben Nye has a good affordable option, but if you can find and afford it I’d highly recommend Blue Marble or Green Marble. Also, for removal, a wash cloth and warm soapy water in the shower is excellent. If you have some tough spots, coconut oil or an oil based makeup remover works.
You also do not need a lot of setting powder. If you can see the color of the setting powder on your makeup it’s way too much!

Professional facepainter here! The reason the color is so weird with the sponge for water based facepaint is happening for 2 reasons: first you should never use your regular makeup sponge for it as the regular stuff will mix with your new paint so you get a browned color. 2nd you should be using a paint sponge not a makeup sponge. The makeup sponge doesn't have the proper porosity for it. You need a bit more water on the cake and sponge it down a few times before applying to your face. You also can do contour, layer etc with the facepaint without ruining, however it takes a lot of practice. (Also face powder does help make it last)

The use of the cream base is similar to what they do on Broadway for Wicked and Elphaba's makup--they stick usually with a water based primer/thin foundation and then use the Mac Chromacake/Chromastick which is water based--and just seal it with translucent powder. All of these methods you've shown can be sealed by using Ben Nye's Final Seal makeup spray. That stuff is RIDICULOUSLY strong with how well it seals makeup both everyday and cosplay/stage makeup. I've sweat through entire shows and not had my makeup budge with that stuff.

As somebody who is blue more often than not for Dnd cosplays I wanna offer my tried and true setting method. I use the water based Mehron paints. First I prep with the Mehron alcohol setting spray to dry my skin, after my base is done I use that again followed by all my powder products (eyeshadow blush etc). Finally I’ll use the alcohol spray again, powder my whole face with the elf translucent setting powder AND the elf matte finish setting spray. This method keeps my makeup on for HOURS, and that alcohol spray is not only making it super transfer-proof but it keeps my face VERY dry. If you have dry skin this will not be the best for you but bodypaint makes me SUPER oily and this is how I keep it under control!

I use Mehron's Clown White Lite for my Joker cosplay. I actually really like it: it's very comfortable to wear imo and the pigment is great (is opaque on my brown skintone). That said, when some gets on uneven it's so hard to fix or add more on without it getting more patchy (I use a sponge which overall gets me more even coverage than a brush). Like, you have to do it basically in one layer, as fast as possible. And for the life of me, I haven't found a way to set it which makes adding contour a nightmare. (I use the same powder as you but it still tends to pick up product off my face, or leave a patch of powdery white that doesn't match everything else and won't blend.) TBH those issues probably have more to do with learning curve and application technique than the actual product, but it's a pain. Which is too bad because again, aside from those issues it's my favorite product I've found. I'd love to see you try it out sometime if you want, these videos are super helpful and a solid white coverage can be so tricky. I used to use the white Paradise water-based paint, but that always ended up cracking on me where my face moves (not a good look) and then kinda fading/muddying almost into a gray after a while in those areas.

Ben Nye final seal (the best) and Mehron sealing spray (alright) are going to stay on for a long while while you’re setting. Also a very big fluffy brush for the setting powder.

As a Mina Ashido cosplayer, I have lived by the Mehron Aqua paints, BUT recently switched to colored foundation (haven't tried yet, because I've put a pause on going to cons, and cosplaying); HOWEVER, seeing you try the Mehron Liquid paints, makes me wants to try those; I really liked how the coverage laid down, and how quick it seemed to go down, rather than having to constantly mess with mixing colors to get my desired shade of pink 😅
Also, one of the things I do to help the aqua paints hold on, is I do a base of foundation; this was a trick I learned from watching Madeyelook, who also has her own line of face paints and brushes! Def recommend her videos if you're looking for face/body paint tutorials

as someone who first learned how to face paint using aquacolor and later switched to creamblend sticks, i'm never going back. I painted my entire face+neck+arms and the tops of my hands blue (using the dark blue and white sticks like they were contour and highlight) to a summer renaissance faire, in 90 degree weather, wearing a triple-layered long sleeved black canvas costume-- and it looked like i'd just applied it after sweating and running around in the woods for over 10 hours! they last FOREVER too, i've been using the same set of white, dark grey, and silver sticks for over 4 years for multiple costumes and they havent run out yet! my trick is to apply it sparingly directly to my face and then blend it out with a loaded sponge and brush.

My main issue with face paint is sweating it off, so to get around that, I discovered that they make an actual facial antipersperant. It comes in gel form and if you try it MAKE SURE you get the one that says "facial antipersperant" cause a normal sprayable one is not meant to be used on the face.

    A little tip:
I do body paint very frequently and I work with the mehron creamblend sticks. I apply it with a makeup sponge, what I do to ensure that the paint is gonna have a very high coverage is that I wet my sponge and then I squeeze it real hard with a dry cloth to get all the water out, the sponge has be plush but not wet, that way it won't suck the product and leave you with a very nice thick coat of paint on the face, also make sure to set it afterwards with translucent setting powder. Hope this helps.

I haven’t tried it yet but I recommend trying Sunset Makeup’s colorful foundations! They’re literally just foundation in colorful colors, and you could mix them to make pretty much any shade. I’ve seen some people who do bodypaint give it great reviews, so I’m gonna try it when I eventually do Jester, since I sweat too much for the mepron aquacolors RIP

I have a funny story about the Mehron liquid makeup. In my senior year of highschool we did Into the woods for the musical and had extra people for group numbers aka the Trees. I was one of those trees, the director got us the liquid makeup in green and brown so we could blend into the background. During rehearsal we did a makeup test, so we could get used to the product. I and my fellow trees quickly realized that the brown paint was exactly my skin tone.😂
TL:DR I now match my foundation to Mehron liquid makeup in Sable.

This video is so fun, I learned things I didn't know today! I wanted to say though, the other thing about clown white is that it WILL pick up little dust and hair particles if you don't set it. You most likely won't see them, but you'll certainly feel them. It's honestly a sensory nightmare, but there's nothing quite like it in terms of makeup.

with layering cream paints, you can wait for them to dry or do a LIGHT layer of powder in between layers to help.
the ben nye powder is my personal favorite (I used to do makeup for a theater)
choosing between aqua and cream paints can also come down to your skin type. Some people with oily skin CAN'T do cream paints, and some people with dry skin CAN'T do aqua paints. Someone in the comments already mentioned, but washing your face first and moisturizing / priming for your appropriate skin type matters a lot.

I've been thinking of using Kraze FX facepaints for my eventual Pomni facepaint (well, facepaint in general but so far Pomni's gonna have the most out of my cosplans). I've been told that wax-based paints will stay better on oily skin (which I have), but I'll definitely try out the Mehron paints to see which one will work better! (and also MAC cosmetics as recommended by my sister)

For my Mollymauk cosplay I use water based makeup but spray it with setting spray thats meant for sweating. It helps keep it on and less likely to come off. I then do my eyeshadow contouring and other makeup before spraying the setting spray twice over. I did the same thing for my Skinbleshanks makeup for Cats and it didnt sweat off even after all the dancing

My favorite way to get a smooth effect with face paint is also paint brushes, but then a make up sponge to smooth and blend, and i get a very natural skin finish
**Also DAMP sponge before using it with the paint, stops from absorbing too much paint. Set it with a powder of the same colour (when I do my demon paint, I use a matching red blush and set everything, black details with matte black shadow, and even metallic shadows are amazing over top for a scale finish)
And set with a make up setting spray (especially something formulated for the summer, this can go for a primer as well, you can get ones that are meant to make things more water proof ect)
