- We look at Joey Logano's path to becoming NASCAR's biggest bully.
Joseph Thomas Logano (born May 24, 1990), nicknamed "Sliced Bread", is an American professional stock car racing driver. He competes full-time in the NASCAR Cup Series, driving the No. 22 Ford Mustang GT for Team Penske. Logano was the 2018 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series Champion. He previously drove the No. 20 Toyota Camry for Joe Gibbs Racing from 2008 to 2012, scoring two wins, 16 top-five finishes and 41 top tens.
Logano's first major NASCAR win came during the Meijer 300 at Kentucky Speedway in just his third start in the 2008 Nationwide Series. He became the youngest driver to win a Nationwide Series race at 18 years, 21 days old. The previous youngest was Casey Atwood in 1999 at 18 years, 313 days. Logano became the youngest winner in Cup Series history when he won the 2009 Lenox Industrial Tools 301 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway at 19 years, 35 days. The previous youngest was Kyle Busch in 2005 at 20 years, 125 days. Logano is currently the youngest ever winner in two of NASCAR's three top divisions. Logano is also the first NASCAR driver born in the 1990s that has competed in NASCAR's three major divisions. In 2015, he became the second-youngest Daytona 500 winner, only older than Trevor Bayne. He is also the youngest ever driver to win in both the Cup and Xfinity Series.

People were telling Joey to stand up for his self. When we started doing that, he became the bad guy. That Auto Club race against Denny Hamlin was when he really started to come into his own
It's honestly pretty sad knowing that Joey had a reasoning to why he is the way he is, all the drivers did nothing but pick him apart till eventually Joey snapped. Villains are not born, they're made...

I don't understand why Hamlin acted like Logano wrecked him with intent to hurt him. They were just racing. I don't care for either but Logano was just going for the win.
The thing is that Logano ran into Hamlin up into the wall, as payback from Bristol.
The drivers wanted to push him Joey Logano around and now he pushed them back and they started crying about it they wanted to push him around Joey just was giving them what they asked for

I have ALWAYS said that the drivers made Joey what he is today. I was never bothered by what he did to Mark, but I understood the frustration and anger from the fans. Now that this video puts that move in context... I understand moreso why he did that to Mark. But everything that has happened since the 2013 dump and run by Denny... I think that was the straw that broke the camel's back for him, so I stand by saying, even though I don't condone a lot of what Joey does, the drivers MADE Joey who he is today. I'm not saying anyone has to like him or forgive him his current trespasses, but I've always asked that people stop forgetting of how Joey got to this point.
Well said and spot-on comment. Finally a comment in this section that isn't bogged down with the trashy "rubb'ns racin', boys", the old "he's just going for the win" or even "I don't blame him for fighting back! Go get 'em, Joey!", never quite getting it right, until your comment. Always failing to address that, just because he starting fighting or pushing back-which is great-doesn't mean he didn't start racing like a total toss by doing so. He just was influenced and dragged down to their level by childish bravado idiotic bullshit from the types of Ryan Newman and Tony Stewart-resulting in the nice, young kid getting bitter and warped thinking in the process. Hate to see in life and sports is no different-still under the same umbrella.

I'm new to NASCAR watching only for a couple of years and I've never understood why Joey sometimes acts this way. But this vid made it clear for me. He became the one only because there were no options. Proud of him in some way. Thank you very much for the video.

I never understood the hate for Logano, it just seems like they're bitter that he pushed back and beat them at their own game.
Because he became what he hated. And was two faced as shit about it. Like Matt never did anything that warranted being dumped for no reason at Kansas. He started that rivalry. Then he'll go to an interview and be like i hate it went like that. Or i didnt mean to. If you want to race dirty, Then own it. he didnt simple enough.

I honestly haven't seen a better video on this subject of Logano, excellent job! And I like many other NASCAR fans, have seen my share of this bully reputation Joey has many times on track before. And not being a fan of him and a huge fan of Truex as he's my favorite driver, I have definitely witnessed it first hand as I never will forget what the 22 did to the 78 at Martinsville that October evening. And naturally in the moment, I was heated, much like Truex. As I am also one of the fans who don't like the scenario of racing a guy clean for as long as Truex did with Logano, only to be raced the way Joey did on that last lap. But hey, that's just my opinion. Great work again on the video! 👏
OMG that is racing. And Marty wasn't a saint thru out the racing. Look at his car!!!!! And his nasty insane spotter yelling. Mad Marty got respect from a half lap he took from Logano. I agree. As somewhat a Logano fan, while I recognize what created this behavior with him, and can see his point, I still don't agree with it. Yes, villains are made, not born, but even the villain has an opportunity and a responsibility with how they are going to approach a situation. No one is 0% or 100% responsible. We all can constantly work to do better.
You can only push someone so far before they are going to stick up for themselves. I like Logano because I've always been a fan of the underdog, the bullied. People love to dish it out, but boy are they salty when they get a taste of their own medicine. 🤷♂️ Fuck 'em!

Lots of people did dislike Earnhardt, BUUUUT time tends to heal sore feelings (people used to dislike DW too, but now he is a beloved commentator) and Dale being dead also impacts how he is remembered. Also Earnhardt was seen as more of a "blue-collar" guy.

I'm not even a NASCAR fan.. at all.. and I really like your content. The history is very interesting. I even find myself watching next day highlights on CZcams of NASCAR events.. hoping to see Joey at the top, or a couple other names... and he seems to usually be in the top 10.
I actually watch the race highlights instead of the race to just can't sit through 500 miles

He didn't get bullied, he raced guys hard and when they raced him the same way back he played victim. Notice how when a guy stands up for himself or has a reputation for standing up for himself he leaves them alone. Look how he has targeted guys like Hamlin, Elliott, Kenseth and Byron. All guys who don't have a history of standing up for themselves and 3 which were/are some of the cleanest drivers out there. If he was going after guys that had a history of being bullies I'd get that, but it's just not been the case. Joey isn't a guy defending himself, he just tries to make it seem like that. Which I think is what really annoys most people about him. A dirty driver who owns his driving is at least respected, Joey can't even own his style of racing.

Joey logano is not my favorite driver but I think that's the reason I can look at this with zero bias. I don't know how many of you have ever been the new kid in school and got picked on by the cool kids but you're pretty much putting a lose-lose situation if you don't stand up for yourself then you're a spineless wimp and they'll just walk all over you if you swing back all of a sudden you're some kind of like aggressive bad person. No one ever sees you get punched but everybody sees you punch back and they'll judge you for it.

I was just giving my two cents on the conversation of Joey logano, im saying I'm not a fan of his therefore I can be completely unbiased with my opinion and basically come to the same conclusion that Trevor did. I'm a staunch defender of Joey logano I feel like he's got a bad rap because he's not as good at representing himself with the fans as some of the drivers that he's had run ins with with and NASCAR fans are about as tribalistic as it can get in a situation has less to do with the facts and more to do with whichever driver they like the most. I think if you take Joey logano out of all of those stories insert Dale Earnhardt Jr or Chase Elliott nobody has a problem with any of those moves that were made on the racetrack.

I’m new to NASCAR, and I don’t really see him be as annoying as people claimed he used to be. Maybe he changed? I dunno. He is my new favorite driver though.
He has changed- The 2015 Martinsville wreck humbled him. He still gets into it every now and then with other drivers, but he chooses his battles more carefully.

I mean regardless of what Logano meant to do by turning Hamlin, its ultimately Hamlin fault that he ended up in rehab. He poked the bull and instigated a fight with a 2 ton steel death trap flying around a circle at 185 mph. The hell did he think was going to happen? The only reason Joey is the way he is, is because everyone kept pushing his buttons and he got tired of it. He stood up for himself. Whether the injuries sustained were intentional or not is meaningless, the only person Hamlin can place blame on is himself by instigating that fight. It’s like walking up to a bear after smothering yourself in fish guts. Just asking for trouble. I really like your videos man, I know this is from like a year ago but still. Production quality is amazing, keep it up!

I was always a fan of 24 and 48 growing up, so I like the more clean cut drivers, but I can’t help but like Joey. He’s so much more likable to me than Dale Sr. was and worlds more likable than is Kyle Busch, even though he can also be a “bully” at times.

Joey's story is much like mine so obviously, I love him as a driver. I've never been a fan of a race car diver who wasn't bull-nosed aggressive. Nice guys do finish last or not at all.
I don't think most people's issue is with how he races, but rather how he doesn't own the type of driver he is and worse how he complains about drivers who race him aggressively.

No, guys still wreck him. Joey has just gotten smarter at picking his victims. He finds guys that don't fight back. I hate to say it, but Joey has in a sense always been a bully. He races guys hard, but then gets mad when he gets raced the same way and uses it as an example to wreck a guy. Joey played the victim role for years and still tries to play it. For a while it worked, but as time has gone on people have caught on to it.
In my opinion the only 2 things he has done on the track that people should be mad at is 2018 martivile but I say he is trying to race for a championship and thr win guarantee a shot at one so I don't blame him for that. And 2015 Kansas witch one could argue the same thing I just mention for martivile

I’m a big Logano fan (been a fan since 2009 when I was a little kid) and I agree about Kansas and 2018 Martinsville were dirty. I give 2018 a little bit of a pass because he needed to punch his way to the championship, but Kansas was 100% avoidable

I think if Joey owned up to his style of racing I could respect that. Guys like Busch and Hamlin are some of the more dirty drivers. Been annoyed by both over the years, but they atleast own up to their style of racing. For example, if a driver were to wreck a guy for a win I see nothing wrong with it since Nascar does allow it. I think it's dirty and I hate it more if it's my driver getting wrecked, but I can atleast respect the driver doing it when they own up to it and have no issue being raced the same way. Joey lacks big time in that department. When he does it he tends to come up with some lame excuse to justify his actions rather than just saying he wrecked them for a win. Then when guys do it back to him he whines about it and then seeks "revenge" and worse yet spews the same line of "I just want to be raced how I race others". I think that's where he gets most of his hate.

IMO, the NASCAR media had a script, no matter what your eyes saw and ears heard...JOEY was to be the punching bag for the pampered bullies and they ran with it! Creating this narrative out of whole cloth that Joey was the problem, not the NASCAR pampered bullies! The whole thing was and still is a narrative that is a lie and yet they still promote it.
