Kyle Larson's Racing Redemption

  • We talk about Kyle Larson's rise to fame, his fall from grace and his road back.
A resident of Elk Grove, California, Larson attended his first race with his parents a week after his birth. He began racing at the age of seven in outlaw karts in Northern California. As a teenager, he raced open-wheel cars, including United States Auto Club (USAC) midget, Silver Crown and sprint cars, competing for Keith Kunz Motorsports and Hoffman Racing with Toyota backing; He also raced in World of Outlaws sprint cars. His first sprint car race win came at Placerville Speedway, where he was one of the youngest drivers to ever compete. He won the 2011 4-Crown Nationals at Eldora Speedway, winning in all three types of USAC cars in a single night, only the second driver in history to accomplish the feat. He won two Silver Crown races that season and was awarded the series' 2011 Rookie of the Year. He holds the sprint car track record at Ocean Speedway in Watsonville, California, set in 2010. In 2012, he won six USAC National Midget races including the Turkey Night Grand Prix. Even during his stock car career, Larson continued racing open-wheel cars for midweek races in addition to going to New Zealand in some off-seasons to race.

I've always believed, that despite his faux pas last spring, Kyle Larson has always shown a high moral character. Take note; @7:37 the first thing Kyle said was remembering his "old" friend Brian Clausen as well as using the phrase which Brian made famous "we parked it for him." I hope the racing nation would join me when I say "Kyle, let go, let God" and continue on your path to Racing Greatness. PS; I really loved your video and the way you rapped it up! Nicely done.

The only reason larsonwas fired and suspended is because one driver made an issue about his comment . The same driver would rage quit while being paid to race in i racing.

Kyle would not have been in the lime light nothing would have ever become of the iracing incident. Am I saying it is right for him to speak like that ? NO. But is it right for anyone to use that language no matter the color of their skin or their race? NO It is bad no matter how you look at it, but at the same time people of African decent should also be held accountable for using the same word even when it is to each other. So if you are to call me out or anyone else for using the n-word then they should be called out as well. what is right for them is right for me and what is wrong for me is wrong for them. If you want to call me racist for telling the truth then do so. Otherwise I really don't care what people think I am only I know the truth there.

Hey the stupide German guy Again. I have some questions. Why do you guys start on dirt tracks? Here in europe we only drive on Tarmac. We stat at at age 5-6 with gokart racing and we stay on Tarmac. Is there any benefit from racing on dirt? Maybe you get a better car control?

I think dirt provides a very large challenge since it’s hard to do well on it. Young drivers go to dirt to prove that they have talent in something incredibly challenging so they get noticed. I don’t know for sure, but that’s what I think.

I'll try answer this; I raced karts as a kid on circuits in Australia, never had an interest in ovals at that time as it was all just about formula 1 not NASCAR haha.
I havent had much experience on ovals, but a tiny bit.
It is because racing karts on circuits is just completely different to racing an oval, dirt oval racing is similar to tarmal oval racing.
      I'll describe it, this is how dirt ovals and tarmac ovals are similar;
The way you make speed on an oval is unique, there is no apex to hit, and taking a wide line to the apex will just add more meters to your lap (a very very short lap), you are also not putting the absolute maximum load on the tyre throughout the radius of the turn. On an oval, you want to have 100% load on the tyres from turn in, to mid corner, and letting load bleed off natrually as you exit. That means your turn in speed, mid corner and exit speed are all maximised. Okay so now we know that, the optimal line through the turn should be consistent with the radius of the turn, to maximize the pressure on those tyres throughout the radius of the turn.
Oval tracks are very wide, through the turn, you could position your racing line as you please from the bottom to the top. Running the "low line" would be to run the car down the bottom of the corner, this is the shortest way around the track but also the corner will have the tightest radius. If you were to run the "high line" or the top of the track, you would have to travel further in your lap, but the radius of the turn is not as tight as down the bottom of the track. Theoretically, the more speed you could carry, but the further you need to go. I hope that makes sense.
Next up then, is racing lines and track conditions.
On an oval, no matter if it's tarmac or dirt, the optimal line around the turn is changing rapidly. To give examples of how this is on a tarmac circuit, different tarmac mixtures and surface finishes are intrinsic to the road base, there are many types of mixtures and surfaces on tarmac ovals, and they all react differently with the tyre. This itself doesn't change a lot, but how much oil breaks out of the surface of the tarmac base, how much rubber is being laid on the tarmac and where it is being laid.
Is the rubber on the surface sweating it's oils? is it damp? These are all factors that create changes in the optimal line, and even finer condition changes, track temperature being the most important, air temperature, air density etc have an effect on the optimal line. Car setup usually follows the line that it is most suited to on the day. Sometimes the difference is clear, and either the low or high line is a lot faster than the other, but for different cars, different setups, different conditions, the difference could be minescule between the low line and the high line.
On dirt tracks, well, you know how I said that on tarmac, the characteristics change rapidly?
Times that by 1000 and you have dirt track racing, dirt tracks can change so fast, that you could go through a turn once, and it will feel completely different 15 seconds later the second time you go through it...
Think of a dirt oval surface as clay (literally), this clay could come in any state, it could be dry, it could slightly damp and tacky, it could be completely soaked and look like slippery orange slime. As you can imagine, dry dusty clay and muddy clay sounds very slippery to drive on, let alone unpleasant. Obviously the fastest is the grippiest form of clay, the tacky damp clay. Every different dirt track has a different style of surface, and none of them really feel the same. They are all prepared differently, some are very well prepared and some are terribly prepared.
The real magic happens when you start racing 10-15 cars on the oval, you have cars flying through turns, spinning their rear wheels while trying to smash that rear tyre into the surface harder and harder to get optimal drive (grip).
You can imagine, on a dirt surface, that is going to change the characteristics of it quite a bit in just 1 lap, let alone 30 laps.
The optimal line is changing from bottom to top depending on how the surface is, the cars are constantly changing it.
So you can see, the way you make speed, and the ever changing track conditions are very similar between dirt ovals and tarmac ovals, for kids to grow up dirt oval racing, they become very adaptive drivers to their conditions, feeling where the grip is and where that optimal line would be on the oval. This is just invaluable experience when they go to tarmac ovals (I must imagine tarmac almost feels boring to them as they are so on top of what's going on).
Overtaking is pretty much the same philosophy between the two also, you can sacrifice exit speed for entry speed and vice versa but it becomes almost minescule on tarmac, it is very hard to stage an overtake on tarmac and usually utilises multiple different techniques to work together.
So I hope that helps you understand how different it really is driving around an oval compared to the racing on left and right hand turns and the relationship between dirt and tarmac ovals.
Hope you have fun watching oval racing!

Dirt gives you a unique ability and comfort in controlling the out of control. Cup cars move around a lot and require a good bit of correction to wrong every bit of speed out of them. Dirt is also the most popular hometown attraction so it’s just what people grow up doing. Randy Pobst actually has some arguments against kids going straight from cars with no suspension to race cars with suspension because they tend to setup the cars way too stiff and their feedback to the chassis guys is always making things stiff. Dirt relies heavily on suspension and making adjustments as track conditions and the tires develop. If you listen to radio chatter, a good driver can tell you they want more spring in one corner, more wedge, or less air pressure solely by feel.
