  • We discuss Joey Logano's rise to fame, his early struggles, his legendary run-ins and his rise to the top.
Joseph Thomas Logano (born May 24, 1990), nicknamed "Sliced Bread", is an American professional stock car racing driver. He competes full-time in the NASCAR Cup Series, driving the No. 22 Ford Mustang GT for Team Penske. Logano was the 2018 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series Champion. He previously drove the No. 20 Toyota Camry for Joe Gibbs Racing from 2008 to 2012, scoring two wins, 16 top-five finishes and 41 top tens.
Logano's first major NASCAR win came during the Meijer 300 at Kentucky Speedway in just his third start in the 2008 Nationwide Series. He became the youngest driver to win a Nationwide Series race at 18 years, 21 days old. The previous youngest was Casey Atwood in 1999 at 18 years, 313 days. Logano became the youngest winner in Cup Series history when he won the 2009 Lenox Industrial Tools 301 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway at 19 years, 35 days. The previous youngest was Kyle Busch in 2005 at 20 years, 125 days. Logano is currently the youngest ever winner in two of NASCAR's three top divisions. Logano is also the first NASCAR driver born in the 1990s that has competed in NASCAR's three major divisions. In 2015, he became the second-youngest Daytona 500 winner, only older than Trevor Bayne. He is also the youngest ever driver to win in both the Cup and Xfinity Series.

Joey might have lots of instances of racing like a tool on track, but he’s one of the absolute nicest drivers in the garage. I’ve met him six times over my decade and a half as a NASCAR fan, and Joey is constantly one of the friendliest. Not to mention all the work he does for charity. @@zzz6valvoline In advance, thank you for coming to my TedTalk
You can really see this on the superspeedways especially. Yes, there are others that are just as, if not more, aggressive than he is on them, but those guys mature and new ones take their place. Like Ricky, Byron, and Chase I remember not too long ago were terrible blockers and horrifically strong pushers the entire race and it got them in trouble, but it looks like each one of them has matured out of that phase as they've figured out how to race in the draft and not wreck anyone every time they touch somebody (some learning slower than others, but still learning). We don't have to worry as much anymore on lap 60 of a race at Talladega or Daytona with them near the front trying everything possible to get to the lead. Even for the stages, it's not usually them causing the problems anymore.
But Joey is still that guy, and even after Brad called him out for throwing really, really bad blocks *in the clash*, he's still going out there and doing it, regardless of what lap it is. Now, he's got Bowman and Reddick as he spent more time up front every plate race, but he's still one of the biggest offenders in the field.
Sorry for the huge rant but I just needed to get this out here

I was a Logano fan when he was racing in hooters pro cup and up until his 2nd year in cup. At some point though I realized he should have grown up by now and hadn’t. Hiding behind people immediately after pushing someone over and over whining about things people were doing and then doing those same things. He’s a child and has the level of hypocrisy of a child. He never grew up and always lets daddy and the crew fight his battles.

Joey is the brokenhearted kid who now breaks hearts, by sheer resilience no less. The guy talks about different things that got him to where he is today but quite frankly, there's no higher power involved here, maybe say for the racing gods, who likely gave the Connecticut native a chance through motorsports icon Roger Penske handpicking him for the 22 in late 2012. He might've gotten lucky but you have to realize, these situations have played out previously in the auto racing industry, so this is definitely not a one-off deal here. But after that, it's really all Joey if I'm being honest, when talking about his position in the NASCAR industry today.
Thing is, I'd be lying if I said that all of the things Logano did to get himself here were perfect, because that's not the case. Watching this video, I've begun to realize that: 2015 was a massive learning experience. There's no other person or thing to blame him for starting the war w/Kenseth than himself. While it wasn't in an acceptable way, Matt's payback showed the line Joey was searching for, in terms of aggression. He was too aggressive, and that's why he lost the 2015 title. I really do think that that played a role in the 2018 championship, as Logano didn't wreck anyone for that Homestead slot--- It was a bump-and-run instead, a blend of that 2015 aggression & much cleaner racing this time, since Truex didn't spin as a result of the contact. It seems like Joey knows what to do now since he's been in all sorts of situations throughout his career, whether self-inflicted or not. I wouldn't be happy about 2015 if I were him, hell it'd a very forgettable time for all I know. At the same time, however, it'd be nice to have the frame of mind to at least realize that those mistakes did somewhat propel you to that fight for the Cup a few years back, and seeing this video I think he has a similar conclusion.
I'm not a big fan of him, in fact he's one of the guys I dislike the most. With that being said, however, I admire the tenacity he had (and still does have) to overcome the problems of the past and make up for them. The best part is honestly, young drivers can look at his career and use it as an example, as getting rushed to Cup will result in uncomfortable situations they'd need preparation for. In other cases, said young drivers can avoid moving up too quickly and bet on themselves by staying down in the bottom divisions of the sport, thus avoiding much of the adversity Logano faced early on. I'm glad Joey has learned. He may not be very pleasing to watch sometimes, but at least you can say that he fought back, and in his way no less. Hopefully he's able to continue to form his craft as he becomes a more of a veteran in the sport.

Fontana 2013, people's view of him would've changed massively. I'm not a Logano fan but I do appreciate how talented he is and how he has won in everything he's driven. Also I think a lot of the hate is plain jealousy. A lot was made of him getting a top ride real early in his career, they weren't so quick to explain the amount of hard work he had done to get there. Let's face it, a lot of drivers may be able to/have a chance to, win a Daytona 500, but only a few will ever be good enough to win a championship. Even though there's others I would rather be champions, I wasn't mad at all seeing Logano win one and if he stays at Penske/in any top team I think he will win 1 or 2 more before he's done.

I don't have a problem with Joey's racing. I don't see anything I haven't seen before. The guy's got talent, there's no question about that. These blocking moves or turning someone as a result of being blocked are part of NASCAR racing. And throughout the years I've been enjoying NASCAR I've seen plenty of "dick" moves also made by the allegedly more respectable drivers. It just wouldn't be NASCAR if there wasn't some bumping and grinding on the track. Joey's got nothing to be ashamed of. The races he's won was because he and the team managed the car all the way through and came first. They were not fluke wins. So there's no reason to target Joey and give him heat.
