Gordon started his professional racing career in the Busch Series with Hugh Connerty Racing, followed by Bill Davis Racing, winning three races, and began racing full-time in the NASCAR Winston Cup Series for Hendrick Motorsports in 1993. He is a four-time Cup Series champion, having won the title in 1995, 1997, 1998, and 2001. He was the youngest driver to win a NASCAR title, being 24 years old by the end of the 1995 season. He also won the Daytona 500 three times in 1997, 1999, and 2005. Gordon has completed three career Grand Slams and has won a total of sixteen Crown Jewel races (three Daytona 500s, four Talladega 500s, three Coca-Cola 600s, and six Southern 500s), both of which are all-time records.
He is third on the all-time Cup wins list with 93 career wins, while having the record for the most wins in NASCAR's modern era (1972-present) and the most wins in one modern era season, with 13 during the 1998 NASCAR Winston Cup Series. Gordon's 81 pole positions led all active drivers and is third all-time, and also a modern era record; Gordon won at least one pole in 23 consecutive seasons, making this a NASCAR record. Other records include the most restrictor plate track wins with 12 and the most road course wins with 9,[4] and he was the active "iron man" leader for consecutive races participated in with 797 through the 2015 season.[5]
In 1998, NASCAR named Gordon to its 50 Greatest Drivers list. Ten years later in a 2008 article, ESPN's Terry Blount ranked him 10th in the 25 Greatest Drivers of All-Time.[6] Foxsports.com named him as the fifth best NASCAR driver of all time.[7] He was inducted into the NASCAR Hall of Fame in 2019. As of 2016, Gordon was considered the highest-paid NASCAR driver ever and the 18th highest-paid athlete of all-time with $515 million in career earnings, per Forbes.[8]
Gordon, along with Rick Hendrick, co-owns the No. 48 Chevrolet driven by Jimmie Johnson, who won seven Cup championships from 2006 to 2010, 2013, and in 2016. Gordon also has an equity stake in the No. 24 team.[9] Gordon also owned a Busch Series team between 1999 and 2000, Gordon/Evernham Motorsports (co-owned with Ray Evernham; later solely owned as JG Motorsports), winning twice.

Hey a lot of fans like Jeff Gordon more than Joey Logano and Kyle Busch alright!
The fact that Dale Sr openly admitted that he got beat shows the amount of respect he had for Jeff Gordon.
For all the "rivalry" that was manufactured between them, there was much more of mentor-mentee relationship going on between them. Earnhardt was savvy in the business side of Nascar and played a huge role in getting it presented that way.

If you really think about it, days of thunder may have been based on tim richmond and dale earnhardt, but jeff gordon in many ways personified cole trickle.
Jeff was an outsider, much like cole was. Jeff kept to his own team much like cole, and both were young and unstoppable who gave the crowd favorite a run for his money.

Yep, I stopped watching nascar after being such a fan I named my kids after drivers, it just sucks today with its new rules, and drivers no one’s ever heard of. I watched the 500 this yr, and only knew a 1/4 of the field by name..
Jeff Gordon was hated in the beginning, but in the end, fans now appreciated him because he never did anything wrong to make fans angry, all he did is what he did best, race and not be a showboat. Jeff Gordon will always be my all time favorite NASCAR driver ever. Well made video.

Yep, there was only that one thing with the titanium spindles but that was Evernhams fault. I was at #93 in martinsville, and the WHOLE crowd cheered when he won and stayed behind to watch his celebration. Awesome dude.
He was hated cause here came this new kid which was pretty much handed everything, from being in one of the best teams at the time to having the best cars and best engines and a lot of people hated him for that. But he was still a great driver that didn’t do anything wrong or dishonest and in the end he proved himself and became one of the best.

I was a die hard Jeff Gordon fan from the beginning of his career to his final victory in Martinsville. I never lost faith in him and his abilities and he will always be one of the greatest NASCAR drivers of all time no matter who says otherwise.

@@j9vlikz683 the only time I have pulled for Newman after he dumped Larson at Phoenix in 2014 was when we didn’t know if he was alive or dead in last year’s 500. Glad he survived, but still cannot stand him on track. In any other form of Motorsport he would be penalized for fucking with the lead cars while being a lap down. He 100% cost Chase a win at Dover in 2017 and has consistently been a thorn in the side of better cars, seemingly out of spite alone.

My dad was a Jeff Gordon fan so, naturally, I became one too. That number 24 car brings back a lot of good childhood memories.

I really don't think it had that much to do with Jeff's perceived intelligence, or even the fact he wasn't a Southerner. It didn't do him any favors, but it wasn't the core reason why I didn't care for seeing him win, or anyone else I knew at the time. It was the fact that when a guy--any guy--wins roughly one out of every four races, and sometimes four or five in a row, things get boring in a hurry. It's the same problem you see right now in NCAAF and Alabama. I had a friend who used to say, "Nobody likes a winner," but even that makes it sound like people are jealous of his success, and that's just not it. It's the effect it has on one's desire to watch an event. You either expect that person will win, or you start to pull for anyone else to win instead. I always liked Jeff as a person, especially back at the turn of the century. It's just that after awhile, I wanted anyone else to step up. And for what it's worth, I think maybe that had an effect on the popularity of the era...guys like my own favorite driver, Bobby Labonte, Jeff Burton, Rusty Wallace, Dale Jarrett, Tony Stewart, Jeremy Mayfield...any driver that was winning races during this era whose name wasn't Jeff Gordon, I would pull for. Had the same general feelings about Earnhardt, though, so maybe I'm atypical in this regard.
Was always a Jeff Gordon fan, his early 2000's pepsi cars with the bright yellow fender and spoilers are still some of my favorite cars he ever raced with on superspedways.
I liked him growing up because of the colorful colors on the car. but as i aged i genuinely loved him and rooted for him every race. he is the reason i got into racing

Thanks for this. I never could make up my mind if I was more of a Jeff Gordon or a Dale Earnhardt Jr. fan. So when Jeff retired it wasn't that hard for me, as I didnt have to split my cheers anymore. I've been a NASCAR fan since I was a kid, which is unusual for a Eurpean, but I never liked The Chase system, it is increasingly inconvenient to watch NASCAR in Europe and when Dale Jr. retired, i stopped watching. Thanks for this blast from the past.

I am proud to say that Jeff Gordon brought me into the sport in the mid-nineties (him and the Papyrus Nascar Racing sim, lol) and I pulled hard for him in EVERY single race from about 97 till he retired. "Nascar fan" hated Jeff and this pleased me because honestly, despite the fact I was born and raised in that environment, I didn't see eye to eye with those good ol boys. I was quite confident there was simply no reason to hate Gordon except that he wasn't one of them and that he dethroned their champion Dale Sr. and then he went on to dominate the sport in the face of all those haters. For a young, well-spoken kid to do all that in such fine style was something I identified with very strongly. I absolutely KNEW I was going to be on the right side of history and that the hate was petty. Thank you Jeff! I'm glad the haters eventually came around for the most part but you didn't need them.

It’s hard to argue. Jeff Gordon went down swinging at the end of his career, broke barriers, and never lost his abilities to drive, give feedback, or be a team player.

One pattern I noticed about Gordon's restrictor plate wins is that he tended to take the lead while the TV camera (and commentators) were focused on something else on the track. The master of distraction!
That ending was legit. That final few minutes says everything about what Jeff meant to the sport. The Jeff/Dale rivalry might have been the greatest rivalry in nascar. But the guys loved and respected each other, even after one of them left us. Gordon is the man, Dale was THE MAN, but they both MADE the modern era of Nascar what it was, and if you cant get over that... just go away.
As you can tell, I was a diehard Dale Earnhardt fan. I followed him from 1979-2001 and was drawn to his style of racing. If they didn’t want you to bump, rub and bang, they wouldn’t have left the fenders and bumpers on the cars.

I remember Gordonmania well in the mid 90’s. You couldn’t turn on the tv or go to any store without seeing someone sporting the rainbow DuPont colors. He was never my favorite but Jeff is a great dude and a hell of a driver.

same use to be a labonte fan and hated gordon. idk what it was but i went to a race in atlanta and had the chance to meet him (someone i knews friend was a higher up for one of his big sponsors so i got to go to one of those lunch things) super nice guy and when i met him and he talked to me, gave me a bunch or merchandise all signed like die cats cars, shirts ect..

He started to like Jeff gordon because I did. He's always thought highly of Jeff and said that kid will be great one day and enjoyed watching him

Jeff got his "hate" mostly from his dominance post '95. He took off and got three championships quickly and was winning constantly. In 1998 he had 13 wins in one season--Mark Martin got 2nd in pts with 7... When you combine the two they won about 75% of the races that year. So it was mostly people getting tired of him winning rather than "hating."
You'll notice that in the 2010s he was cheered a lot more in the stands--where it was boos at his height. I don't actually believe he was disliked for being from the north.

I was a diehard Earnhardt fan when Gordon came along BUT I rooted for Jeff whenever Dale had a bad day because he was a Chevy driver & used to get on Rusty's nerves & I HATED Rusty Wallace... At the end of his career though I was super sad just like everyone else, it was truly the end of an era. There won't be another Jeff Gordon for a long time if ever again...
I loved this video! This did a decent job of explaining why he got so much hate from fans. Some key moments in the early years of his career were glossed over but that was probably because you didn't want to make the video really long and just focus on him and Dale Sr.
Amusingly, Gordon won a million for a diehard anti-Gordon, Dale Earnhardt fan at the 1999 Daytona 500. The fan's loyalties switched for those last few laps.
If they didn't change the format to the"chase". If they went by the old way they collected points jeff would be a 9x champion.. yes he collected the most points 9 different years.
Actually, he would've only had 7. 1996 and 2009 were both good seasons for Jeff Gordon, but ultimately, what cost Gordon those years was in 1996, he had just one too many DNF's, and in 2009, he fell victim to a combination of the Chase and Jimmie Johnson just showing up at the right time of the year.
@Nate Hubbard That's the thing, though: I don't think the math was right. He definitely had 2004 by 47 points over Jimmie Johnson and 247 over the actual champion, Kurt Busch. In 2007, he would've had it by 353 over Jimmie Johnson, and would've had the title clinched after Texas. In 2014, he would've won the championship over Joey Logano.
However, IDK where he gets the other 2. The only other truly good season that Jeff had ever since the Chase started was 2009, and that year, he would've lost the title by 67 points to Jimmie Johnson. While Jeff had the best average finish and only one DNF, where he got beat was from the number of races JJ won. (Jimmie had 7 wins to Jeff's single win at Texas) Not to mention, JJ led more laps, and most of his wins came in the last 10 races of the year. As far as any other post-Winston Cup era seasons that have been argued that Jeff should've been champion, there's not much of an argument.
2005- Jeff would've finished 11th in the standings regardless of the format.
2006- Jeff actually mathematically did better in the standings with the Chase than he would've w/o.
2011- Jeff was too inconsistent.
2013- Jeff would've finished outside the top-10 in points without the Chase. And in fact, if it wasn't for NASCAR just adding Jeff to the Chase, he wouldn't have had a chance.
2015- He was the best overall driver during the Chase, but his regular season wasn't so great. He only would've finished 9th in points overall w/o the Chase.
1996, however, could've been argued as a Championship year had NASCAR scored more points for wins. Jeff only lost the title by 37 points, but he had 8 more wins than Terry Labonte. Where Jeff lost the title is by having 2 more DNF's than Labonte, ultimately. And considering how many points he lost from crashes alone in the Daytona 500 and the Winston 500 at Talladega, that ultimately could've made a difference under the standard format from that year. And Jeff would've become the first driver to win 4 consecutive championships.

I saw Gordon race a USAC sprint car when he was 15 years old and completely destroy a field twice his age. I knew immediately, that's my guy. He was my favorite driver from them until the day he retired. As good as Gordon was in NASCAR, he was an even better open wheel driver.

Well put together video my man. Gordon was soo dominant back In the 90s and early 200s mainly but once his career started to taper down you took every victory and cherished it like it was his last. I hated to see him retire. Racing hasn't been the same since he left.

I honestly became a Jeff Gordon fan because when I was real real little my mom used to watch Nascar and I wanted to be able to see my driver on TV and Jeff Gordon's car stood out from the rest. I was Jeff Gordon fan and a house where my mom was a huge Bill Elliott fan, and my stepdad was a huge Dale Earnhardt fan. I was a Jeff Gordon fan through the time when everybody hated him, I actually remember finally going to a NASCAR race, and listening to the people boo him when he was introduced. Yet none of them could ever doubt that he was one of the most talented men on the track. Right now I really don't know who to root for anymore, so I just go with Hendrick Motorsports in general. This is a great video loved watching it.

They rewrote the rule book around him. They reconfigured the points system around him. Hell the France family literally told him to slow down to make "The Show" better.... without a doubt an all time great!
From my Dad (I never was a fan, but always respected his driving):
1. California vs Southern
2. He was really young and given the best team in NASCAR.
3. He was a cry baby, especially when he first started.
I think it was really hard for old school fans because he was the start of clean cut, clean racing, beating and banging is bad thing. I don't think he was the reason for that shift, but he was most successful driver when that shift happened in the 90s.
Also, Earnhardt Sr. Was not universally beloved before his death, and dealt with a lot haters when he was constantly winning.
I think the biggest standing ovation Jeff got was for his last win at Martinsville
I always gave my brother a hard time as kids for liking Jeff Gordon. I'm 32 now and I have to say Jeff is among my favorite drivers of all-time, plus he seems like a decent guy to boot.

I’ll be honest, Gordan is the 2nd best nascar driver of all time, ahead of Jimmie, ahead of Pearson, ahead of Dale. For a decade it was Jeff Gordan over and over, 6 consecutive road course wins, 4 consecutive Darlington Wins just nutty

One of the funniest things I ever saw at a race track. At a race at Pocono in the mid-90's, when they still had their 500 mile races. We were sitting a couple of rows behind this guy. He stood up for the entire race. Every time Jeff Gordon's car came down the front stretch, he'd hold out his arm and give Gordon the finger the whole way down the front stretch until Gordon got into the first turn. He did it every lap, 200 times. The guy was wearing a Dale Jarrett T-shirt and ball cap, and Jarrett ended up winning the race, just ahead of Gordon, so that guy's finger work must have been effective. The hate was real, not just from Earnhardt fans. I always liked Gordon. He wasn't my favorite driver (I was a Harry Gant, then Ward Burton fan and also liked the Labontes), but when my guy wasn't in contention, I rooted for Gordon because I enjoyed how much he'd piss everyone off when he won.
Son I was there in 04!!! That was without a doubt one of the greatest races... the fights in the stands were Unbelievable. The cameras could not catch the action that was going on.
My mom was a big fan of Jeff I wasn't till about 6 years ago I respected him as a driver he was loyal to Hendricks and all his fans I miss him on the track can't watch it anymore the generation I watched is gone and retired and can't bare it
Jeff was the reason why I got involved in nascar to being with and has always been my favorite driver since then.
Gordon was my favorite before Chase and I used to not like Kenseth, now I do though. But he looked terrified when Gordon pushed him at Bristol. I just wish he had took his helmet off first, still I think he just couldn't believe that Gordon did that.
In short: Too many victories too early in his career.
The "hate" for Gordon faded as the years went on because his "victories/champions" balanced out over career length. But at first it was "too much too quick" giving Gordon the feeling that he "had everything handed to him", especially by NASCAR officials.
First off, very nice video! I was always one that complained about seeing Gordon win, but you gotta respect what the man did, amazing race car driver and towards the end of his career I don’t think anyone would have minded seeing him win just one more.

The thing with Gordon, he remained a straight edge racer, never really was in any real controversy on or off the track, and, as a racer, never changed his coolness, his calmness and never let anyone get the best of him. He was always able to come back, and make a driver pay for racing him dirty. Jeff was one of those drivers who didnt need to move you, he could straight up pass you, and, if he knew his car wasnt faster, he was content in that position, and worked to make the car drivable. I think, he'll go down as the best nascar driver of all time, and im just counting what he could do in the individual races. But, the one thing that makes me say that hes the best, is 2011 at Atlanta. Him and Johnson battled for 20 laps, while the field was a long way back behind those 2.... And we got to see who was the best driver, perfect track, rough and bumpy, with high speeds, and them, going toe to toe. That was amazing, and we'll bever really get anything like that again.
Honestly if I had the intimidator behind me and won a clean race with dale behind me OMG I'd be 10Xs more humblely proud for it theres no one else that would make it harder to win against
fun fact, jeff gordon used to race at my local dirt track kc raceway (now named atomic raceway) in chillicothe, ohio, I remember being about 6 or 7 years old and my uncle taking me there for the very first time and telling me that
I was ready to give you one of my very few dislikes on youtube until the end and that got you the like. The problem is that you missed the entire reason that Earnhardt fans "hated" Gordon. First he challenged DE when Dale was at his very best in 94. Besides crying when he won, which guy who loved a guy like Earnhardt couldn't stand, the final race of the 95 season when Jeff won his first Championship sealed the hatred until Dale died.
Memories fade and I guess I should look this up, but as I recall, Gordon had a huge points lead in 1995 (maybe 300 or more points) with 4 or 5 races to go and Dale simply dominated and closed the distance to give him a small chance to win the 8th Championship that he and his fans yearned so desperately for. It ended up that for the final race in Atlanta, Dale had to win and Jeff had to not finish last for Dale to win the Championship. Almost impossible odds, but there was a chance and Dale was Superman, so Earnhardt Nation was expecting the miracle.
What Hendrick did sealed the hatred for Gordon and HMS until Jr signed with HMS. Hendrick qualified an extra car with I think Phil Parsons driving it. On the pace laps they brought that extra car down pit road and raised the hood and "looked at it" for 4 or 5 laps and then started the race laps down to ensure the Earnhardt could not win the championship. Dale of course won the race, but ALL Earnhardt fans hated Gordon and Hendrick for the pre-race stunt that Hendrick had already said he wouldn't do. That took the race out of the hands of the drivers and that pissed off Earnhardt Nation like nothing else ever had. So Hendrick "cheated", and lied about it and that lit the already smoldering fire of hatred. The hatred grew to an inferno when Earnhardt's performance started slipping after the Talladege Race where he had the horrible accident while Gordon dominated.
At one point Gordon had the most amazing record in NASCAR with 17 straight Top 5 finishes and that streak was only ended by a rain shorted race. Plus he was always 3 moves ahead of everyone else on the track and would see wrecks happening before they happened and move his car into a position to avoid them. I think at some point the other amazing thing about Gordon incredible driving ability ended, but for the vast majority of his career, no fan ever saw the bottom of his race car. It seems like maybe he bounced up on someone's car at Texas once and showed the bottom of his car then. When you think about all those laps, all those races where he battled so hard to win and he was never in a crash that was bad enough to flip he car, is a testimony to his driving skill. He was always moving his car into a position to avoid the worst of it. I used to tape all the races on VHS and would watch them and this was not an accident. He did it consistently.
NASCAR fans don’t hate Jeff. Especially not in our home state of Indiana. Jeff was the best driver in the best era of nascar. Dudes a legend

I don't remember much of his early career since I was about 5 when he started but he was always my favorite. I had so much fan memorabilia before my house burnt down
I am finding now that I am older that I wish I would have liked Jeff more when he raced then I do now. I grew up being an Elliot and Senior fan so I did pay much attention to Jeff
Jeff was my grandpas favorite when he was racing. When Dale Jr joined Hendrick, I thought it was so cool because my favorite driver was teammates with his favorite driver.
There is a messed up logic with racing fans against someone who wins too much. Period.

I just want to thank you for making this video, I absolutely loved it. As a diehard Gordon fan this hit me in all the feels. It really makes me wish I could go back and enjoy what I feel was the peak of Nascar through the early to mid 2000s. I remember all these race like they were yesterday, like they all happened just the other year yet it’ll when the season starts here in 2021 it’ll be the 6th since Gordon hung up the wheel.

I remember driving through Watkins glen area as a 7 year old reading a sign on someone’s porch calling my favorite driver (JEFF Gordon ) a faggot. He also won that weekends race my first ever race and I’ll remember that the rest of my life thank you Jeff!

I Never Hated Jeff Gordon but he was one of the best veteran’s in last decade of the 2010s i had no hate to him i really respect him alot but he will be missed in Racing.

Always seemed like Nascar as an organization wanted people to hate Gordon more than fans wanted to hate him. Anyways, as a "young" fan for the time, he was always my favorite. The dynamic between him and Earnhardt WAS nascar to me. Light vs dark. Old guard vs new. Passing the torch to another warrior. . . None of it is the same anymore. Glad I was able to live through it, but the sport is dead lmfao.

My son favorite guy back in 90’s and 2000 I lost him at 10 years old but I kept all the stuff he bought of this guy! My guy was Dale and son we spent lots of time at the race tracks until his death in 2000 and I lost Dale next year I followed Dale Jr but no one else
