"in 1998 I was racing at Daytona." Bro, I remember this race. I feel like the 90's was THE decade that NASCAR was at its absolute peak. It's probably become more popular technically... but that era was just such an amazing time to be alive through. A massive part of the sport died the day this mans father passed away on the race track. You could feel it in the air even if you weren't at the track. It changed the sport forever. I had a childhood friend who's parents had their ENTIRE house decked out in Dale Earnhardt stuff... thinking back I bet they made a LOT of money on some of that stuff. But yea Jr. and Gordon were new on the scene and were soo good.. Senior was a veteran along with countless others that were still racing at the time. It was just an amazing time for the sport and as a kid growing up I can't thank these people enough for just making that such a special time for SO many people. Hopefully one day the sport gets that "passion" back. After Gordon and Jr. retired that was just the nail in the coffin for so many people. I still enjoy the sport but just not like I use to. I know some people will be squeamish regarding the part about Dale Sr being strict and 'whipping out the belt', but I'm positive that played a major role in Dale Jr's attitude and disposition today.. Yeah gripping the shoulder belt with both hands, I really felt secure, relatively speaking. The car ran off the road in a curve, and the driver overcompensated, so we started sliding sideways to the inside of the curve, and I had a second or two so that's when I grabbed the belt and shrunk down a bit in my seat. (Just naturally or accidentally, not sure why I grabbed like that) We did two rolls with the passenger side hitting the ground first (I vaguly remember seeing the grass in the window beside me)
The driver had no seatbelt and was bouncing off the roof. When we stopped, I asked if he was ok, and when he said yes, I burst out laughing. He thought I was laughing at him, and remarked it was messed up I was laughing, but then he started laughing, too. Really I was just laughing at the experience, because I was just flipping but I wasn't hurt, like I had cheated death, and I was relieved.

Imagine the Intimidator being your father. Dude was larger than life. Seeing Dale carry on his fathers legacy is just incredible. We can’t forget about the historic moment Dale Jr won the first Talledaga race after losing his father. Incredible life story this family holds.
