Probably, though that may be that his sponsors also didn't like Coke products on a Pepsi car. I think Johnson was also a Pepsi car, but they didn't push it as much as Gordon. For all we know, Pepsi was willing to pay the fines.

Best part is... This was at the height of the controversy around the Gatorade (Pepsi) drivers blatantly knocking the Powerade bottles off of their cars in victory lane. (I think there's a compilation video of them doing it somewhere.) I remember NASCAR putting the drivers in a tough spot by putting Coke (Powerade) products on their Pepsi sponsored cars and it didn't sit well. It all came to a head when NASCAR demanded the drivers leave the Powerade bottles on their cars or face fines for knocking them off... So at Jimmie Johnson's next win, he didn't touch the bottles.. But he did place a large cardboard Lowe's sign in front of the bottles to obscure the camera's vision of them... It was hilarious, because he obeyed NASCAR and never touched the bottles... But that didn't stop NASCAR from fining him 10,000 for "improper use of cardboard." So it's subtle, but poetic that in this video, you also get a small nod to the other sponsor war going on at the same time... It was such a great time to be a fan of the sport.

Gordon won the plate race prior to this at Talladega & then won the 500 at the next Daytona Cup race in 05. He would go on to win the Spring Dega race again in 05 & then both races at Talladega in 2006 so it's safe to say that he would have won no matter what sponsor was on the car, having Pepsi on there on a night when Coke had such a huge presence was just the icing on the cake for Hendrick Motorsports & the Pepsi execs...

Iconic race, but not even Gordon's best plate race. I recall one of the 2004 or 2005 Talladega races where the 24 was by far the fastest car and Jeff ended up pulling away from the pack on every restart. Hendrick, especially the 24 garage, was cooking up some wild stuff in the mid 2000s.

There's a cardboard cutout of Jeff Gordon holding a Pepsi bottle behind me. I felt obligated to click on this video and watch it because of that
