In soccer the size of the goal changes depending on angle of attack. At extremes the goal is less wide than the ball

My mom told me this when I was a kid. But the reason it's hard to get the ball through the hoop comes down to the number of possible positions in space that the ball could occupy vs. how many of those positions don't involve the ball touching the rim. Anyone who's ever tried throwing a small rock through a chain link fence can understand the concept. You'd think, oh, this rock is so small and the gaps on the fence are so much larger, it'll go right through. But you're actually more likely to hit the fence than not, because of this ratio. Depending on the size of the rock (and a rock worth throwing at all is going to be bigger than a pebble...), there are more possible ways for the rock to hit the fence than there are ways for the rock to completely avoid touching the fence at all.

When you watch Basketball on TV you don't realise the size of the hoop........
But standing under one you know the hoop is a lot bigger than the ball

I just realized American hoops are much larger than European at least where I live. The diameter of the hoop is about 1.5 that of a ball

What makes it easier to score is, being able to grip the ball with one hand, & your leg muscles ability to get your bodies weight up high enough, to get that gripped ball high enough, that you can put the ball through the rim. At least with dunking the ball that is.

4x the area... the important thing is that 50% of a ball diameter off perfect centre and you hit the rim (but probably still go through) and 1 ball diameter off centre and it's pretty much a guaranteed miss. So your accuracy needs to be better than the diameter of the ball.
