  • More than three decades since Argentinian football icon Diego Maradona played for Napoli football club, he remains a visible presence in this Italian city. His image adorns the city streets, in homes, cafés and even a cemetery.
Italian photojournalist Sergio Siano journeys through Naples meeting Maradona fans, who believe that the footballer’s success elevated Naples to previously unseen greatness - as a club and a city.
This film charts the long-lasting love story between Maradona and the city of Naples.
But it is more than the story of a famous footballer: it documents how Neapolitans elevated the Argentinian hero into their own Saint Diego.

There is a popular phrase, 'Legends are born not made'. I don't know how far it's true.
But a True Legend is always a 'Revolutionary', who inspires, transforms a society, a generation not only present but many future generations as well.
At the time of peak in his career, Maradona decided to go and play for an Italian football club Napoli in Naples. The poor club never won the Italian Football League(Serie A League) ever before. Maradona transformed the club, the city and people of Naples. He makes them believe, they have courage, they can defeat and they can also 'WIN'.....
Many Thanks to Al Jazeera & Domino Film for making this documentary.

He was a man from the poorest part of the planet, from the slums, who made it because of his will. For millions of people he has been a symbol, the symbol of the social redemption that everyone has the right to pursue, the symbol of the chance of making it counting on his own tenacity. Furthermore, he has never allowed himself to be engulfed by the world of the privileged and wealthy classes, he has always remained a man of the people. He fought a lot of battles against the corrupt power of the FIFA and for the poorest and the most forlorn people of the world. Only those who followed him knows all this, because only seldom the main stream media, an expression of world elites, gave him the floor, they preferred to point out its shortcomings (which he also had, he was very human in this). This is why he was and he still is loved by all the poor and the good people of the world.

Maradona led Napoli to multiple wins in the Italian league and UEFA championships along with the WC win and also led a struggling side again to WC final. Both as a player and a leader he was unparalleled. And despite his stature as a footballer he wasn't driven by money otherwise he wouldn't have joined a club like Napoli ever. No one today can imagine a Mess I or a Ronaldo to play for such clubs. If only he had been better monitored as he wasn't big on self discipline, he could have not gone into a self destruction. I remember the semi final in Naples vs Italy in 1990 where the city was rooting for Maradona as one of its own. Against the national side. That says something greater about a player and the power of sporting symbols to override even national rallying cries. That in itself is a GOAT standard as none of the GOAT contenders can conjure something like this.

As a youngster in Scotland I looked forward to watching Argentina play us at Hampden. The media were in full praise of this boy starlet who was coming to play, I had never heard of him until the build up to the match. I mainly focussed on him as he was showing amazing skills for one so young. I got to see him score his 1st goal for his country and like the rest of the stadium applauded it. I have always admired the man and wished one day he would represent my team Rangers, but sadly he was well away from our grasp. What a footballer.

Thanks Very much Al Jazeera for this documentary! I really enjoyed it! I am a Mexican and I grew up watching and loving Maradona Greatness. Somehow I felt that Maradona was not only the ambassador of great Football to the world from Argentina but also from Latin-America. I must admit I was not aware of the positive impact and legacy that left in the city of Naples! Great Work!

Thank you for this extremely well-made nostalgic and emotional film about the greatest player of all time. I also appreciate the different layers (e.g., poverty, prejudice, struggle, victory and hope) of this film and the stories of some of the folks who lived through this magical experience, and what it meant to them, during Maradona’s reign. Maradona inspired countless people to love football and his second home, Napoli. 🙏

Maradona is the biggest legend of the most famous sport in the world, Diego is known from children to the aderly all around the globe!
When I read comments about people from India, Nepal and other far places about Diego it makes so proud of him and what he did here.
As Neapolitan I always like to repeat that Maradona can only be compared to Bob Marley lol.
Other biggest legend in sports or music of the past are not so actual like them still nowadays in young generation.
And yes Maradona had an immense class and he played with bolts in the ankle, don't you forget it!!

In india where there is huge fandom for Maradona and Argentina... there is a saying.. "argentinism is a religion established by Maradona and messi is the newest prophet "... and Messi too delivered atlast..😊
Late 1980's was the time when television was for the first time available
/affordable in india for public and indians who till then were used to see people playing football in harvested paddy fields or occasional club matches were for the first time exposed to the quality of world football...and they were mesmerized by Maradona, the magic he did with football, how he carried his team in his shoulders delivered them worldcup, his stand with poor and oppressed, how genuine he was while expressing his joy, anger and sorrow... He made a whole generation of Indians his fans.. and these fans told stories about maradona and argentina to their children, made them his next generation of loyal fans..and the flame is now passing on to the next generation kids...the same story goes to bangladesh too, i think.
