  • As you get your boat ready for the season, is it time to ax the wax? You may have heard about marine ceramic coatings -- they've made their way from the automotive industry to boats. There are two types -- commercially-applied ceramic coatings and ceramic products for consumer application. BoatUS Magazine contributing editor Lenny Rudow applied a consumer-grade marine ceramic product, Gtechniq Ceramic Fast Coat, to his boat last spring. So how did it hold up after 9 months of heavy use for fishing? We'll give you our honest opinion on what we loved ... and what we didn't. Is it worth giving it a try on your boat? Watch the video and decide for yourself!

    Lenny & all... this relatively new ceramic coating / waxing stuff is interesting.
    But, there has been a wax that I have been using and it performs the same & MAYBE EVEN BETTER than liquid ceramic coating wax! It has been around ever since I was introduced to it in the early 70's! It is a wax product company called "Colinite". Made of pure carnuba wax. It is a paste specifically made for aeronautic & marine applications. It is made in Utica New York. And, I have found it to be absolutely phenominal! And, it is as durable as armor... & extremely easy to apply! Similar to ceramic, it is best applied IN A SHADED AREA to a clean hull. In small sections at a time... BEST DONE WITHOUT LETTING IT DRY TO A HAZE! (This is critical, but not an absolute must.) As soon as it is applied... it must be buffed by hand or machine BEFORE IT DRIES! That's all there is to it! I have used it on all my aluminum & fiberglass boats! In addition, I use nothing but that on ALL my automobiles! It has continued to bead water, repell dirt & water stains seemingly forever! Just do an occasional wash! I think the cost may even be the same as ceramic. Even if the cost may be more (?) the extremely long lasting performance is more than worth it. They also have it in a liquid formulation but, I haven't had experience using it. The paste is so good... I just don't bother with anything else. I recommend this product stricktly by my own experience. I am not in any way paid advertising this or connected in any way to the Colinite company. Just passing this along to others... as you are doing with the modern ceramic technology! 😊

      Collinite is one of our faves, fastwin! In fact, you'll see it used/mentioned in all of our gelcoat repair and gelcoat restore vids. Excellent product! (And we're not sponsored either.) I do like that there are some alternatives to wax though. Have you seen the results of the commercially applied ceramic coatings?! Like a mirror! Pricey but supposedly lasts a long time. I'd like to know more about the stripping process after a few coats -- probably need deep pockets to maintain. We go into more detail here about the differences between consumer ceramics and commercially applied coatings if you are interested: www.boatus.com/expert-advice/expert-advice-archive/2024/february/ceramic-coatings. Thanks so much for sharing your experience -- no doubt our waxers will find your recommendations and techniques very useful! (And maybe @Collinite will advertise with us 😂)

      The stuff works great and performs well against Lovebugs in Florida that want to stick to the front of your car

    I started using this last year on a black hull, and it has lasted so much longer than wax. The boat sat all winter and still looks great.

      That's great to hear, Paul! A black hull is so hard to keep looking good -- this must be a game-changer! Thanks for watching

    Hi, the boat that you are testing it on is that boat in a salt water environment or fresh water? I have a black hull and always in saltwater. Thanks for the info.

      Thanks for the question, Michael. Lenny's boat is in saltwater. No doubt you have a lot of upkeep on your black hull to keep the spots at bay!

    Seems like you are not concerned about applying over previously waxed surfaces or about waxing over ceramic surfaces?

    • @boatus
      @boatus  Před 2 měsíci

      That's half right, Paul. There isn't really any concern over putting wax on top (although on a professionally applied ceramic it shouldn't be necessary). But there is (a lot) of concern over applying ceramic coatings over a previously waxed surface. The fiberglass needs thorough prep before any ceramic is applied, and part of that process is eliminating all previous coatings/surface contaminants, including waxes. Thanks for watching and for the question! If you want to learn more about professional applications, visit the article linked in the description.

    What would you recommend for a pontoon boat. My pontoons look bad for only one year old boat.

    • @gerard143
      @gerard143 Před 2 měsíci +1

      if you clean them up well you can apply shark hide. People use acid to clean them, however I feel it gives the toons a bit too much of a white look. Vanguard makes a vinyl product that you can have applied above the waterline and it keeps it looking better for years and years. Any exposed metal will be regular work to keep it looking close to new. It's just nature of the beast.

      Thanks for the question, Edward. This product is formulated for fiberglass, however, there are several cleaners out there that can get your pontoons looking good. tar Brite and Mary Kate are two brands of marine maintenance products that have a long history of making reliable products, and both offer dedicated pontoon cleaner/shiners. Hope this helps getting your 'toons looking like new again!

    Your boat looked shiny before you applied the product. Would have been more informative to show a boat that needed waxing.

    • @boatus
      @boatus  Před 2 měsíci

      True, Eric. But we work with what we have. Lenny's boat is quite new and he takes excellent care of it in between waxing and/or coating. However, if you want to see some pretty crazy before/afters, check out the article we did on ceramic coatings for the magazine. The difference is significant. The person who supplied the pics used a glossmeter to show the improvement! We're talking mirror shine. www.boatus.com/expert-advice/expert-advice-archive/2024/february/ceramic-coatings

      Nope. Not at all, actually, M. This came out of an article we did for BoatUS Magazine looking at the new technology and comparing the consumer and commercial products as well as pros and cons of each.There's a lot of interest in ceramic coatings, so we thought we'd offer our own experience.
