  • Is it worth fixing? What's involved? It may not be as bad as you might imagine! The sticky substance can be plasticizer or a breakdown of the components of bioplastics, which could also be regarded as a plasticizer. Whichever it is, you can always test with various solutions to see which attacks and removes the buildup. A wide variety of solutions can be used to test: alkaline cleaners, citrus cleaners, naphtha etc.

    Nice job Rick! I run into these pretty often, I'll have to get some of that plastic primer and try refinishing some of them. Of course some have major cracks, gouges etc.. and just are not worth trying to repair. Thanks for posting this!

    Nice work! I really learned something here. Thanks for sharing. Personally, never been asked to correct the condition. That was a bad one and it was beautiful when done. Guess I’m kinda spoiled in my business cuz I’d tend to run the other direction if asked to work on that. I’m curious what dye system you’re using? We sprayed Special -T for many years, then Classic Dye products, but now my new found friend Polycril. Absolutely love it.

    Wow u have skills for sure. My 2010 is250 is starting to get sticky but its a beige color not black. It only gets a bit sticky in the sun then goes a way after in garage or at night so its not shining or super sticky or dirty like most but im wondering what i can do to stop it from going down hill. Any suggestions anyone?

    can i do everything without removing the side pillar trim as they very easily broken and they have sensitive components under them like airbag

    • @a.r.t.srealrepairsforrealc8247
      @a.r.t.srealrepairsforrealc8247  Před rokem +1

      Yes you can try to mask off the a-pillar trim but it's such a messy job you are better off removing it. Removal is not a problem.

    What percentage of plastic primer do you add pigment to the color to create the texture?

    • @a.r.t.srealrepairsforrealc8247
      @a.r.t.srealrepairsforrealc8247  Před 2 lety

      I use 80% plastic primer and 20% pigment. So 4:1. Same ratio as for any other base. I don't measure exactly, just eyeball.

      The water base products are extremely low in VOCs so there are no fumes. Check this with your supplier.

      @@a.r.t.srealrepairsforrealc8247 -- Awesome; thanks! I just discovered your channel -- addicted to watching your repair transformations now. How can I learn more about the supplies used? Particularly in this video: What drew me to the channel is the consideration of buying a Lexus product with a potential sticky dash. To the lay person, the supplies you referred to are ambiguous. If I get a used lexus, I may want to try this myself. And if I can't how would I find someone like you in my area? Thanks again!

      Isopropanol is widely known for best results. But of course each model of dash is made differently. Experimenting with various solvents is not going to hurt anything at this point. Thanks for the question!

      There's nothing to wipe off. It's not just something sticky on top of the dash, its the actual plastic of the dash melting / deteriorating.
