I bought a 2008 Aprilia Mana with 1900km on it for $3800CDN for my wife to learn to ride. I have two other bikes VStrom 650 and a Triumph Trophy, the Aprilia is an absolute blast to ride around town great build quality. I love being sat at lights when the cruiser guys show up and rev their engines and the light goes green and I leave them in the dust. This bike is a blast to ride around the city.

Did you get the GT version or the non-GT version? How did your wife do on it? I learned how to ride on a grom but I don’t want to mess with shifting either and I’m looking at a mana 850 (non-gt) as well. The only thing that worries me about this bike is will I be able to flat foot it and it’s weight. Those are the two things that are gonna do me in.

  • @herbertvonsauerkrautunterh2513

clutches and manual gear changes are for suckers..... After years of driving trucks with 18 speed road ranger transmissions in city traffic all my vehicles are automatic. The main reason why I like scooters.... And of course the storage options, ease of use and ability to smash through traffic...

To date, I've owned 14 motorcycles (motocross, adventure, and street) and 5 scooters with nearly 600000 miles on the roads. Currently, I own a Honda NC700X DCT. So for those of you that think this DCT model is for people that don't or can't "man up" I have news for you; You have FULL control of shifting if you want. The DCT shifts so fast, you don't need to take your hand off the throttle. in Drive mode, I will never get tired in heavy traffic. I personally don't care that it's a 50hp bike, I've had the 150hp ones and HP and 0-60 are not the only equations of fun. Being able to use the full spectrum of an engines power is more challenging, which is why I also enjoy scooters. I've had everything from Yamaha YZ-80, RD400, Seca750, FJR 1300, Kawasaki KZ550, GPZ's, Suzuki Vstrom 650 Honda Interceptor, Hurricane 1000, Sabre 750, and many more, but the NC700X is one of the best bikes I've owned. I won't win any drag races, and I can't wheelie, but it's fun and nimble and the freakin thing gets a constant 65mpg so range is killer.
The BMW scooter is a nice scooter, but personally, I don't care for scooters over about 450 lbs., and that little thing is about 50lbs more than the 500lbs Honda.

you will enjoy the New Africa twin adventure DCT more than the tame NC700X. it's a 100 HP it does everything the NC can better plus it goes offroad and it's a Legend the NC is isn't and will never be.

      IMO, I'd buy a DCT on a lighter/smaller bike for city/town traffic.
If honda ever put out a DCT CRF300/450 or cbr300.. maybe something a little bigger but with weight in mind. That new hornet with a DCT would be cool but it's over 400 lbs..

  • @herbertvonsauerkrautunterh2513

Two wheels, regardless of whether it's a scooter or not is a motorcycle.. I ride big scooters and and do not want a clutch. All my cars are auto too. I dive trucks for a living and want it as easy as possible when not at work. Plus, I can out hammer the traffic on my scoot better than a big geared bike.

I own and owned several different bikes, from supersport to touring to naked to enduro. On every bike i rode, i often found myself in the wrong gear, or not nowing in what gear i was. I'm not the only one apparently, because every new bike today is sold with a gear indicator. Bikes without a gear indicator get shamed for not having one these days. Not to mention the numerous of aftermarket installed gear indicators. But when you refer to an automatic motorcycle, you always get the same response "shifting gears is half the fun" or "no shifting? Why would you want that?" Or "if you don't shift, your not a reall biker (of even a real man....). Well i test ride a Aprilia mana, liked the looks and went for a ride. Man was i sold.... the seating is comfortable, the riding position is upright, and the scooter like automatic, what a dream! Ideal in the real word, in and around town and for commuting. They compare it in this video with dct from Honda, a complete different setup. The dct really shifts, so during the shift you have no traction (tension on de chain) i want that when i'm in a corner, especially when it's wet. The Honda shifts in the middle of the corner, when you throttle up (too keep tension on your chain) very scary and dangerous when that happens. I've got my mind set on a Mana. I have my Tuono 1000 R, on sale and i'm buying a Mana. I'm 38 now, riding for almost 20 years now. Bikes used to shift with a leaver on the side of a tank (like a car), then they moved it to clutch by hand and shifting by foot, i believe automatic is the next logical step in evolution (why is Honda's DCT available on every bike the make, and the make it better every year, they do that with a reason). It's like cars, they used to be all manuel shifting, then they become automatic, now they are duall clutch. Why? It's more economical, more relaxed and you can focus more on the road. I rest my case.

I've owned my NC700XD for about a year and a half/12,000+ miles. Love it. Owned a Suzuki V-Strom 650 prior. I do not miss not having a clutch. Regarding the comment in the video about wondering if you'd want a bike with a clutch in a year, all I can say is, why? The dual clutch gives me quicker shifts in manual mode, the ability to control the gear selection as I would with a clutch, and it's more comfortable in city and highway traffic.

I haven't had much riding on a motorcycle but I often do touch and go traffic which might be a pain when shifting (up, down, up, down up down...). And there is the also the question of why use a clutch? One of the best things about scooters is how easy they are to ride. Unless you are racing, having a clutch doesn't add much but more difficulty. You might as well wear a sandbag to make turning more difficult while you're at it.

I still think people are missing the boat when talking about these new DCTs. It's not just about making it easier for "beginners and returning riders." Every time I hear that I cringe because it gives it a negative, "training-wheels" kind of feel. It's not a baby bike, or maxi-scooter. It's truly about creating a better riding experience. Better comfort and control in traffic and better performance because of faster smoother shifts. Most race cars and high-performance cars are moving to DCT because it's faster, not because it's easier. I'd like to see someone do an actually side-by-side 0-60 with the same bike with DCT and Manual transmissions.

Not a problem for my cross country travels. The longer distance, the more joy. I hardly go beyond 140kms/hr. If HD is going to come out in electric then why not auto shifters first ? Good vid. Thanks.

I agree. it’s too bad. they came out with the livewire which was a flop. $30,000 for an electric bike is crazy especially one zero motorcycles best bike cost $20,000 new and zero has been making electric bikes longer than Harley has and they know what they’re doing. I don’t know why harley can’t come out with an auto shifter especially for beginner riders. why not come out with an automatic sportster or a automatic xg 500? That’s what I would do if I was harley.

People that like autos seem like actual riders who use their machines or have ridden many bikes and can appreciate autos for what they and are not noobs like the tough talking "manual or die" people think. How can you not like riding anything on two wheels? You'll have a big grin on your face no matter what kind of bike you ride. To rip on something that has two wheels is amazing to me. I'd rock a pink barbi electric, automatic moped if it was that or nothing and I'd thrash the heck out of it. Both have their uses and an auto is flat out better in congested city, rush hour relaxed riding and grocery getting. I'm sure you can wick it up if you want on back roads. I'll take both.

I'm with you. Anything that gets you "in the wind" is a fun ride. Heck, I even tested a CanAm and was kind of impressed. Might look at Polaris Slingshot next. :)

  • @TrNdke
    @TrNdke Před 6 lety +3

I like manual cars and automatic bikes for the same reason: attentional allocation. It's so easy to space out in a cage, that working the gearbox keeps me alert and engaged. Maybe this is part of why manual cars are generally cheaper to insure. You have to pay a minimal amount of attention to drive one. In an automatic, you can just daydream from A to B
On a motorcycle, the demands on your attention are so high, that eliminating the clutch leaves more bandwidth for paying attention to traffic hazards and road surfaces. Maybe this is also why scooters are generally cheaper to insure than same displacement motorcycles.

The Mana does claim 70+ hp but the published dyno curve shows low 50's to the rear wheel. In exchange for a few less rear wheel hp the Honda easily keeps up and gives approximately 50% better fuel efficiency. The Mana also requires expensive CVT belt replacements around 9 or 10K miles whereas the Honda will not.

That said banging out a bunch of upshifts or getting a downshift just right is pretty damn satisfying for me. I think making motorcycling more accessible is fine just as long as it doesn't come at the expense of anything else.

Due to illness, and circulation issues that they have to ride a bike without a clutch.
Due to exercise, I am feeling left top of foot again and am looking for a bike to ride from West Coast to East Coast, lotions help too.
Sport bike, Honda is what I have now and will flat out move with the GL1500 Goldwings of my friends.

I have automatic scooters and a few motorcycles. Yes the shifting is preferred but for "ease of use" and short distance in town errand running which I find enjoyable by two wheels the automatic is better and easier. I just moved to a congested area to so sometimes shifting with all the freakin stoplights is a pain in the ass. Rush hour stop n go sucks for commuting too. Of course manuals have the fanboys but these don't have to be your only bike and if you had one to compliment your regular bike you might even grab the keys more for the auto for most of your riding if it's not purely for recreation.

There can be a very legitimate reason that people might need an automatic on a bike. The Bergman is fun in its own way. its the best around town daily grocery getter.

I like changing gear and blipping down through the gears for me this is part of the riding experience but I test rode a Nc750DCT Honda and it’s a great bike ,i don’t see why bikers out there make such a big deal out of gear shifting ,it’s not exactly hard and can be learnt by anyone, these bikes are built for commuting and touring and still have paddle shift so the only thing your not doing is pulling in a clutch and pushing up and down with the gear shifter ,takes the strain off of your clutch hand ,bikings bout the freedom of being on two wheels and these bikes would be great for people who may have had injuries in the past or may have arthritis so stop being a biker snob and go and give one ago before making a judgement.safe riding to you all.

For all you with little peckers there is nothing wrong with a automatic bike. I have owned scooter, maxi scooters, the POS Honda, and the Aprilia Mana. I have also had a sh!t ton of manual bikes. I suffered a motorcycle injury that makes some days hard to work the gears. Even If I did not have this problem I must say I am glad I was introduced to these machines. I have fun on any bit of two wheels and I do not suffer the ego of big power, big motor, and only a manual will do. I have a Aprilia Mana and it is by far my favourite in the shoot out. I have owned the Honda and the DCT was abysmal. The normal mode would dump you in 6th gear at 40 miles per hour. This would lug that POS lack luster 700 in a big way. The Honda had to be ridden in the sport mode or the gas mileage Nazi's would come and bugger you. The Aprilia is really an amazing bike that I love. I do get pocked fun at because this bike is a auto and most don't understand it. I could care less this bike is a great deal of fun to ride. My Honda was just a washing machine on two wheels. The BMW in this shootout is also a nice ride. I would not hesitate to own one. I have had Berger’s, and the fun Tmax maxi scooters. Ride what you like. If you have the mentality of a twelve year old, bar hopping, homo's of anarchy, then auto's are not for you. If you think that you are only a motorcyclist, if you have a pink power ranger suit on and ride a Tupperware covered race bike on the street, then i feel sorry for your family. Just enjoy two wheels regardless if you are a lifestyle bar hopping pirate guy or a crotchrocketeer. Motorcycles are fun and we are all brothers and sisters on two wheels. By the way if your hands are holding the bars above your shoulders you might be a queen. Be careful out there and have fun.

The one thing that seems to get mentioned in every review of a Honda DCT is people liking it much more once they put it in sequential mode rather than automatic. Which makes me feel like it does something that makes experienced riders uncomfortable. Probably something like it isn't predictable enough.
Yet they never mention that about a CVT, there the comment is as predictable as the gearbox... twist-n-go is boring. It's always just boring, never the need for more control over it to make it better.

I have more than 7,000 miles on my C600 Sport. It is a fantastic bike full stop. There have been a few reports of some problems, but I have experienced none on mine. It has an ease of riding that I've come to really enjoy. Gobs of storage, and more power than I ever need in normal riding situations (2up at 100+ mph no prob) Sure, any Mk1 of any make will have some teething problems, hell even the new R1200GS has a recall from bmw and no one would throw it under the bus. I consider my Sport to be like a cheaper R1200RT. Considering I've just compared it to a $20,000 bike, I expected a more utilitarian machine with real touring prowess. Some bits are abs plastic, just like most full bodied bikes are. But I find it unfair to read so many negative opinions from people who have not even ridden one and are just repeating something they read in an article or from a CZcams review.

Timothy McKean I would differ, only reason to have a manual is for the track, but if you look at f1 in cars, dct is still faster than manual. So performance is better with dct, I think it’s just matter of time till everything goes to dct... or electric then no gears

    • @narrator-timothymckean
      @narrator-timothymckean Před 5 lety

@@saleenr6 I agree that the DCT performs better (see my other comment on this video) But it still costs more, is heavy, and requires more maintenance... - or, maybe just more expensive maintenance when it needs it. :)
I'm looking at an NC700x now myself. The DCTs I'm finding in my area are all about 1500 - 2K more that the manuals. That's a big difference in my budget.

Timothy McKean msrp between the dct and manual is very marginal, couple hundred more if I remember correctly. Weight wise all these bikes are heavy, couple more pounds doesn’t change the charactics, I think at the end of the day, it’s just that people don’t like change, it takes them away from what they’re comfortable with.
