  • We ride the new BMW scooter and also compare it to another new scooter, the Aprilia SRV and then compare both to the maxi scooter veteran, the Yamaha T-Max.
    We also put the head to head on a track to see which posts the fastest lap time.

    Personnaly, I have the BMW C600 sport and it's a very good scooter and a reliable machine, maintenance is not expensive because it is performed every 20000 km.

    I test-rode Aprilia on a highway and small curly slopes. It vibrates a lot, being a V-twin (L-twin to be exact). My hands were numb. You have to park it backwards, because you will not be able to push it back even on a slightest slope. Heavy, and weight seems high - feels heavier than my 1.8L Victory cruiser. SRV is so powerful, it made me smile a lot but I recognized that due to its weight it is a beast of the highway, not so much an urban commuter I need. There is also the exposed chain to lubricate every 1000km and adjust every 5000km. As much as I wanted it, I had to change my thinking. It is a high-speed tourer, not an urban line-splitter. Also noticed the suspension was not as great as on my Downtown 300i (back then), was feeling any ridge and bump, I actually think this was road and engine vibration you feel in your hands. Also very small storage, not enough for my helmet. Legs felt the wind, which was not expected. I did not like Kymco AK550 for its silly Noodoe dash which made my eyes sore (i think it pulses at high speed). I did not try a beemer, from my understanding it is an interesting combo - there is chain (that sounds bad, I did not like the YT videos I saw) but it is not exposed, there is casing. BMW are also expensive. Though power is there and higher than T-Max (lower than SRV but only tourers/highway crazies care). However for practical reasons I ended buying IronMax T-Max 530 for its nice style and limited edition options (Akra, colors, windshield). I wanted a Kymco MyRoad 700 but they are not coming to Australia. Even if they do, Noodoe is a no-deal for me (because PWM).

    Thanks for the info. Quick question, from a few reviews they mentioned that the suspension is not that good on the SRV. What is your experience on the scooter?
    Some have called the SRV a unfinished product due to the suspension.

    I have to admit I have not ridden any of these machines. I do own and love riding a Suzuki Burgman 650 which I consider to be the benchmark for maxi scooters. I realise this video is made in South Africa and so some things will be different than my experience in Australia. In Australia small scooters under about 250cc are the ideal commuter bike. they're lightweight and nimble around the city, purchase prices are low and registration (the cost to put your bike on the road) are low. Above 250cc that all changes and the cost to put the bike on the road can be quite high. With this in mind you don't buy a maxi scooter just to commute or to deliver pizza. You buy it because you want to tour on the open road. This brings us back to the Burgman (the 650 is no longer available in Australia only the 200 and 400) as indicated it is a 650 engine with a CVT (like all scooters) with a manual option. The manual option allows access to a 6th gear that acts as an overdrive - very handy when cruising the highways and back roads at 110km/h (the national speed limit in Australia). The Burgman has twin front discs and a single disc on the rear and ABS meaning stopping is no more trouble than getting going. There is also a parking brake. Storage wise there are cubby holes in the dash one of which is lockable and includes a cigarette lighter charging socket. Under the seat 2 full face helmets will fine fine if stacked as directed. Add a top box if necessary. The windscreen is electrically adjustable so that at low speed you have plenty of air flow but out on the highway you can keep the wind off your chest thus reducing pressure on your arms. The Burgman has a 14 litre tank which in my experience give you about 200kms between fills or about 2 hours good riding which it time for a stop. I feel the TMax whilst a good option might be a tad small in the engine department (at least for me) my other bike is Kawasaki Voyager 1700. Whilst I'm sure it would do a good job I like something a bit bigger. The other two are no doubt equally good machines 560 TMax/ 600 BMW not much difference the Aprillia at 800 is a good size engine with plenty of grunt but in Australia they don't sell many so I wonder about parts and service and all those things you have to consider once you've taken your new toy home. I know this review is meant to be a bit of fun but the track is not where people ride - they do that on the road. I'd love to see another video comparing all three in the city and on the open road. For me I don't care too much about the speed off the mark (I'm always going to beat the cars if I need to), and I don't care too much about the top speed because I'm never going to ride that fast. Braking is always interesting and the absence of ABS is a deal breaker (why would you make a bike without it). Thanks for the review - I'm off to take spin on my Burgman.

The 250 single cylinder liquid cooled built proof engine would out handle all of the above. Even raced a few Harleys in the corners and waved bye bye to them. Top end is 70 and 75 with tail wind. These reviews are all about power/speed. They take nothing else into account? The ergonomics of my Xciting 500 are perfect. Can sit on it and tour all day long 2 up. Fold up foot pegs, gas fill by handle bar, not down in the tunnel where you can't see to top it off. Gear final drive/no chain etc to adjust/lube so on and so on. And it cost about 6 grand new with a 2 year warranty. Buy the way, the BMW engine are built by Kymco, and they want about 11 grand for them! F.U. BMW. I have ridden my old carbed 2007 xciting 500 accross country twice. Several 700 mile days. Longest day was 1,004 miles. Most people with goldwings/harley dressers/BMW touring bikes etc can't do that. If you want to spend 25-30 grand to look cool or to impress the neighbors, go for it. Not me!

      I heard you have to reset a computer on BMW even when you change oil, can any owner disprove? Sounded like you have to pay BMW money for maintenance all the time.
      Aprilia will cost you like the normal 850cc motorcycle. Kymco is cheapest, I have done most myself. Yamaha is more difficult because a lot of panels, need to remove before you can open the CVT on the right (partially covered by panels). There is also secondary (final) belt on the left side, in addition to small V-belt that is fully covered (on the right).
      Storage in T-Max allows 1 full-face helmet (upside-down) and gloves. Because it is wide and long, my "messenger" style laptop bag fits nicely (which it did not in a Downtown 300i that can fit TWO full-size helmets because it was more 8-shaped). Aprilia can fit a Harley Davidson rider's casque and gloves :) no space in there at all because second cylinder sticks up where scooter space was under your seat. Beemer has a clever "drop-down" hatch that fits one full-size helmet and more stuff around it - but not when riding. If you do not lift the hatch back up, electronics will disable starter because you wheel may rub against it when jumping up and down. Consumption is according to displacement, so see tanks sizes ;) T-Max has better weather protection than SRV850, I have not tried BMW C-sport.

    I bought almost new C 650GT scooter and saw in it a few problems and would like to understand if these problems just in my scooter or all scooters of the brand BMW. 1. CVT pulls scooter and trembles at the start and if you drive slowly when I slowly touched gas. 2. When turning at slow speed scooter wraps the steering wheel in the direction of rotation. Using both hands, you can cope with it but the one hand it is very difficult.
    3. Unlike other maxi scooters Tmax for example, BMW had horrible nasty sound. As if there is not only the engine of KYMCO and everything else too.
    Have you met such a problem with your scooter?

  • @GLouverd
    @GLouverd Před 11 lety

    (part 2) if driven properly it has the best fuel economy after integra, better than bmw or tmax when pussed in limit! i have calculated 4.9 lt/100 with 100km/h speed, and 5.8 with 160 km/h for a distance of 250 km.

      BMW now only available on "order". No stock at agents. Very little sales in a highly competitive market where the Yamaha T-Max has dominated for the past 10 yrs and internationally accepted and hailed as the number ONE "maxi- scooter". I don't think Yamaha will easily relinquish that spot to any of the competition.

    • @CaptHollister
      @CaptHollister Před 10 lety +1

      Charl Burger BMW's scooters have proved quite troublesome. BMW has had all sorts of quality and reliability issues of late and their maxi-scooters are no exception.

  • @WarDogTheAwesome
    @WarDogTheAwesome Před 7 lety +25

    AINT NO ONE CARES ABOUT SPEED ON THESE POINTLESS MACHINES
    People who buy scooters look for good fuel consumption, comfy seat, reliability, weather protection, storage and size.
    None of which were covered here.

    i own the srv 850 abs/atc. i have done since now 10.000 km in urban environment, highway. commuting, mountain with curves environment. its a fantastic scooter. when stationary you feel it heavy if you are small dimensions rider! me sitting on 1.80, 84 kg weight, i dont have any problem even stationned. of course its the fastest, safest scooter of them with antispin and good brakes (gold brembo 2pistons 300mm disc). you can keep 210 km and the scooter smiles!
