  • Yamaha X-Max 300 meets the new C400GT - the first mid-size BMW maxi-scooter and the Sym Cruisym 300i. The cool and stylish Vespa GTS 300 HPE joins the show and the nimble and big-wheeled Piaggio Beverly 300 S tries to overtake all of them. We picked some of the most wanted scooters on the market for this review.

    I've got a Xmax 300 and I'm absolutely happy with it. We all know Yamaha is one of the most reliable brands on the market and as you guys say it's sporty, comfy and the space it's got under the seat is huge. I tried Honda Kymco and Paggio before buying it but in my personal opinion the Xmax is the best one.

    As someone who started out on Lambretta's and Vespa's, moved onto big bikes and now after getting board of them just love my Vespa GTS, I feel the others aren't true scooters. I have hired Sym, Beverly and Yamaha when overseas and although competent machines they just don't cut it for me. You may as well have a bike, they are plug ugly too. I have just done a 450 mile "lockdown" tour on my GTS and I loved it. The aim was to take photo's and document empty towns in the British South West.

    Based on this review I bought the Xmax, although before buying it I hired a Vespa for two days while I was in Rome (Aug 2021). I loved the Vespa in almost every way except lack of storage and small fuel tank. In style and character the Vespa wins hands down, but in real world terms the Yamaha can’t be beaten

    Test drove the XMAX 300 and the Beverly 350. Ended up buying the BV350 as it handled better, felt nimbler in urban traffic, and the best part, it literally destroyed the XMAX in acceleration. The Yamaha engine is way smoother though, and it comes with more amenities.

    I have an Xmax 300, and talking about the storage, if you have the Yamaha Comfort Seat installed (which is stock on European markets), the front part of the seat will only fit a half faced helmet, it will not fit a full faced helmet because of the Comfort Seats seat height (which is built too low for short riders). If you have the ordinary Xmax seats (which comes stock in Asian markets) Which the seat sits taller, you can fit 2 full faced helmets at the front and back part of the seat.

If you want yet another scooter test, would be worth xmax 300 vs xmax 400 - I'm doubting the 400 has much to offer for its price. And as others suggest - a kymco. Suzuki do a Burgman 200cc. It's a cracking scooter that can cruise at 75 Mph and has better fuel consumption than all of those reviewed, and lots of underseat storage. It won't out accelerate the reviewed scooters but it will easily keep up on most roads. Its only downside is the floorboards are a bit too high and with the low seat your knees are too high unless you are short. The Beverly 300 is the most stable and compliant round twisties and poor surfaces, and also has tons of underseat storage. It is also the best value of all these scooters. The BMW and Tmax are grossly over-priced.

    For the price of the BMW you will get the Yamaha X-Max 400 and that leaves the BMW in the dust. Or even better a Sym TL500 and enjoy the power of a 2-cylinder engine.
    The Sym is a scooter that you need to ride for some weeks. Then you will detect, that is not the most fancy, but a trusty friend. For the price difference it is easy to add a top wind deflector or even changing the screen.
    The Beverly is the cheapest, and if you invest a 200 or 300 Euro every seat maker can upgrade the seat to a luxury sofa. The 16 inch wheels are invaluable on not well maintained city roads.

    The Vespa should be as big as a scooter gets, otherwise it defeats the purpose of a scooter. The rest weigh a ton and you'd be better off with a light motorcycle. If you only buy these maxi scooters for their convenient twist and go transmissions, consider adding a quick shifter to a motorcycle and a good luggage rack. A low maintenance Moto Guzzi V7 would not only be lighter but a whole lot more fun, useful and rewarding to own. :)

      @nikitis13 Před 5 lety +8

      @@ge-8135 Don't get me wrong, I love scooters but getting into maxi size doesn't quite make same sense to me... Granted, storage is better only if a motorcycle isn't equipped with a luggage rack or panniers but comfort is subjective. You'll find that maxi scooters misalign your spine, legs out in front with all ones weight placed onto the pelvis (like a cruise style motorcycle) places extra stress on the vertebrae, as opposed to a neutral seating position on a standard motorcycle. Suspension is often longer in travel and more compliant with room for greater adjustments. This type of alignment with addition of foot pegs that are generally directly under the hips allows the rider to stand or lift their bottom off the seat easily when riding over potholes, bumps and rough surfaces without having to absorb the impact through the pelvic region. Smaller step through scooter frames with flat floor boards are just as good in that respect. True, no shifting in stop and start traffic is a nice convenience however some recent advances in automatic motorcycle transmissions makes this argument redundant (Honda's brilliant NC700X?) MPG... Hmmm... not really. There are plenty of sub 650cc motorcycles that are miserly fuel users. It's not uncommon to expect under 5 litres for smaller capacity motorcycles. I'm sure we all have personal biases when choosing transport, exploring all possibilities and experiencing each contraption with an open mind is the main thing.

    I have the xmax 300 for one year now and tried all the others in this test (either in the shop or with the help of friends). The xmax is xcellent if you have money to spend on service and parts. Bmw no way too expensive but very nice on the road. The Italians = usual reliability problems after 1/2 years. The Honda forza 300 = same as xmax. So the middle solution = sym but you really have to compromise. The sym will accompany you for many cheap and reliable years with a good money to value rate but no equal to yamaha/bmw/beverly quality and styling.

    Hi guys. Too bad you didn't include the Kymco Downtown 350i in the test. I have one and I wouldn't change it with the BMW C400GT (for example). The price / quality ratio is much higher than BMW, which requires too much money just to show the BMW logo!
    Downtown 350i has power (29 PS), just 195 kg weight, large storage space, perfectly comfortable saddle and a price ... extraordinary. In all tourist destinations, the workhorse for scooter rentals is ... Kymco; I'm wodering why?! I am a Romanian living in Germany (Stuttgart) and it is very popular here.

    I bought the BV. It gives you the best value for the price. I aggree, that the sitting position for taller people is not the best. What I would more mention is the suspension. I bought Bitubo on the back, which is extraordinairy good now. Second Imwould choose the Sym, because it has the best sitting position, third would be the Yamaha. It has a fine engine but a higher price and the sitting position is not as good as on the Sym. Third would be the Vespa, because of its easy handling, but the price is much too high for the thing you get. Last is the BMW, because of its horrible price and its low storage capacity.

I dare you to try and squeez between cars and traffic lines in Bucharest, at rush hour with anything else but Vespa, you'll notice the difference! Ans one more thing, the price difference between them, even without options, it is very consistent, you should mention it!
