Today is the day, Theorists! The day that I, once and for all, prove that Ash's Pikachu is WEAK! That's right! There is no Level 100 here. Throughout the anime, Pikachu has proved to not be as strong of a contender as we were led to believe. Let's get into the evidence!

Theory: Pikachu is smart enough to know how to pretend faint so other trainers can learn and feel better about themselves
"That's the only way it makes sense, and it probably isn't true."
Or he just fakes faint cuz he's lazy AF
I mean, Pikachu did faint on purpose with Paras. Maybe this time, it was a pity-faint, but with better acting
True matpat should do this one
It would make sense for pikachu to throw the match as this trainer was just starting out on their journey so pikachu threw the match trying to not crush the trainers dreams right out the gate. Honestly ash may have known too and played along as those 2 seem to have a near phychic relationship. Though ash is a pretty big idiot sooo….

This only comment with no youtube link. Thank god.
Not only is it possible that Pikachu went into the fight with low HP, but also it's perfectly possible that the anime 'verse works with a slightly more realistic logic in terms of health, namely that Pikachu could have simply had a serious off day with an unusually competent Snivy.
but didn't pikachu attacked first? So even his normal atk damage should have one shot a lvl 5 pokemon
I would follow this logic with if it was an off day and Pikachu knows he is way stronger then it's very probable that Pikachu held back and threw the fight because we have seen pike be very compassionate as counter to ashs competitive nature so I am gonna say pika simply threw the fight because it didn't wana actually hurt a baby compared to it.
Like I used to go to pokemon card game tournaments and even took first place a few times but when I play against my 9 year old I hold super back and don't use any actual strategy. So she can learn and build confidence in desicion making. Pokemon constantly display that level intellect and compassion.
@@mystrknwital9146 focus sash
@@A-Random_Pakistani how tf would a guy who just walked out of the lab with a starter have a focus sash? Also it isn't holding anything.
You're slightly correct about following real world logic just miss 2 points
1 that snivy knew leaf storm there is no way for a normal snivy to knew that
2 it has been explained multiple times that if the trainer got confused than so does the pokemon they were completely shocked why Pikachu is unable to use any electric attack and was not focused in battle
After re-watching this one year later I think I’ve realized that Matt didn’t put in perspective the power boost that Pikachu gets throughout the series as well an example of this would be when Brock’s father uses the electric water generator to power a Pikachu that had to of accounted for some extra levels
And if pikachu kept going until present day then he would of fought legendarys aswell
I mean those extra levels aren't able to be put numerically so i doubt they can be held accountable as a form of bonus levels which already was an overkill on snivy
@@phuahzixuan2077How about we put those boosts as Rare Candy equivalents.

*falls into pit full of sandiles* WRONG LEVER!
Wow, that Snivys power exceeds it's evolutionary level!
Black and white was a reboot.
Why do we even have that lever?
Ash is a hacker and somehow still manages to goof up battling a level 5 Snivy.
Answer: Trained is hacking
That's the funniest part of the whole entire thing. Beating a legendary and then losing to a snivy a few episodes later.
Just to remind you he watch more episodes in a month than you have watched in a year pls don’t make wtf moments weekly
It always bothers me when people say “Pikachu was beaten by a level 5 Snivy.” Snivy doesn’t learn Leaf Tornado until level 16 in Gen 5, meaning that Pikachu was actually beaten by a Level 16 Snivy. It’s still pathetic but it’s not AS bad as a level 61 losing to a level 5.
Maybe he accidently hacked Pikachu's stats too high and they had an integer overflow. When he fought Snivy his stat's were so high that they reset back to 0.
I got the answer thanks your calculations Mat. What you neglect to calculate is that Snivy is actually level 16 because it cannot learn Leaf Tornado at level 5. Meaning Ash's level 59 Pikachu was battling a level 16 Snivy. And here's the direct damage calculations:
Lvl 59 0 Atk Pikachu Quick Attack vs. Lvl 16 0 HP / 252 Def Snivy: 41-49 (91.1 - 108.8%) -- 56.3% chance to OHKO
This means that Snivy will not be guaranteed okoed by a neutral nature pikachu using quick attack. As for the return hit Snivy does very low damage back.
Lvl 16 0- Atk Snivy Tackle vs. Lvl 59 0 HP / 0 Def Pikachu: 2-3 (1.5 - 2.3%)
Lvl 16 252+ SpA Snivy Leaf Tornado vs. Lvl 59 0 HP / 0- SpD Pikachu: 7-10 (5.4 - 7.8%)
Which shows that the maximum damage Snivy could do was 10% back. However Ash's pikachu had been injured and could have not fully recovered, or rather not recovered at all from the encounter with Zekrom. Thus it is entirely possible that Pikachu just has 10% of it's hp or 20% if both of Snivy's attacks were crits and so he was defeated. Now it makes perfect sense. Thanks for watching 600+ episodes of pokemon.
I was wondering if a Lvl 5 Snivy could actually know Leaf Tornado, but now the question is: if the guy is a new trainer and just got that Snivy: why is it Lvl 16?
Every starter starts at level 5 tho

he specifically ignored using move names to calculate levels as move names are different due to japanese translations and there's a lot of inconsistency between the anime and game

honestly the fact that Pikachu is sometimes even crushing other pokemons that are twice or more of his level explains very well why team rocket is so obsessed with him
Yeah.
I feel like you forget that a trainer and his connection to their Pokemon affects the stats of the Pokemon. The fact that Pikachu follows Ash and doesn't sit in a ball like a captive pet makes the two very unique and should not be overlooked. This is key and perhaps you should consider it more closey in your theory. You must look deeper at an emotional level and consider the darker aspects of Pokemon that the Ash Pikachu dynamic rebels against.

You might have accurately surmised Pikachus level, what you didnt account for Snivy having is something that is very crucial. Its the sole reason why it beat Pikachu, something that is often overlooked but its THE most powerful trait anyone could hope to obtain.
Plot armor
Snivy could have had some kind of rare buffs like Pokérus had naturally ate a lot of calc/iron & other minerals where it was caught & possibly maybe endure or some other skill that either buffed def & or atk/spec, Pikachu could have been injured or sick/cursed as well before the fight, factor in a critical hit from an unexpected counter hit after the shock of a lv5 pokemon tanking a quick attack & even I would grow eyeballs 10 timers their size just to then see my lv60 Pikachu get KO'd, there is still alot in the Pokémon world world we don't know about. Battle field could factor in too maybe it was a botched quick atk where Pikachu got messed up by terrain & maybe some active nerf or buff field effects were active, OFF GAME LOGIC NO AWAY PIKACHU LOST BUT FLUKES/RNG HAPPEN.
Or it was just lazy writing. & Plot Armor... Right definitely that, don't know why I'd even give the benefit of the doubt here it's Pokémon.

Here is my very late take on how Pikachu lost against Snivy the first battle. What I think it is is how levels don't really matter in the anime. They exist sure, but they may not apply because obviously Pokemon learn moves that they wouldn't in game, like Pikachu learning Electro Web. The level could still be 5-61, but it probably wouldn't matter because in the end, Pikachu is a Pikachu. A weak statted Pokemon that has a base stat total of 320. Snivy's base stat total is 308. plus quick attack isnt stab, and stab DOES apply to the anime. I don't know for sure if low roles and high roles are in the anime, but if they are, quick attack would not do as much as killing Snivy in 3 different lives. And then to account for the possible high roles and crits for Snivy's tackle (I think its tackle) and stab Leaf Tornado, if I correctly put in the numbers, that would be just barely be enough to defeat Pikachu. Or it could just be a sympathy faint and Pikachu's acting has improved heavily
Leaves out the fact Pikachu tied with a ducking Latios at the end of the Sinnoh series
This number actually makes sense most leveling on these games come from rare candies or painstaking grinding and Pikachu has rookie numbers
czcams.com/video/Cmp1R7frXWw/video.html
.
Yeah, if you think about it, even in the first season, how many battles did pikachu actually have between gyms? Compare that to how many times you get popped in the game going between gyms from trainers and wild pokemon. And you only get experience when you win lol. Ash was getting badges after losing.
What if… Snivy was holding a focus sash and Ash didn’t heal up before that battle (leaving Pikachu with only a couple of HP)?
What about him evolving? Don’t you have to be lvl. 50 or something to evolve?
nah the last game I played, Y, I never used the rare candies. I was saving them for the later levels where the amount of exp needed is crazy. You can easily get to levels around 60 by just beating the game with normal grinding.

To answer your question about Snivy surviving Pikachu's hit and defeating him; there are 2 things that you didn't take into account:
1. Snivy could have been wearing a Focus Sash, which is an item that enables the wearer to survive a hit (1HP) if its HP was 100% before taking the blow.
2. Pikachu had some kind of injury (reduced HP) and Ash didn't go to the Pokemon center to heal him.
Well it did get thwacked by Zekrom
If held items work like Poliwhirl holding the King's Rock, then we would've seen the focus sash wrapped around Snivy's head or something. :O The anime did start accounting for more in-game adaptation by that point such as the 4-move restriction, as well as removing elemental manipulation such as using the sprinklers on Onix and THEN using thundershock etc.
Technically I would say that the level 60ish is his minimum level because there's almost definitely some XP farming off screen.
This is all about the *onscreen* battles, but yeah, that's a minimum.
What level would he have in three more regions? (Start of Journeys)
@@joshuarobinson8529 Probably level 80-90 since he gained 30 in just Kanto then growed slowly later on. Even in regions with a lot of activity he only got like 10 levels.

I know this is two years after the episode came out, but I think there was one thing that might have been overlooked. Pikachu didn't listen to Ash when he was first given to him, so is it possible that Pikachu could have actually had another trainer before Ash, as corroborated by knowing Thunder?
something that might be possible is that the Snivy had a Focus Sash... a held item that would leave Snivy with one HP if it is hit with a an attack that would cause them to faint. something else is that maybe pikachu wasn't restored from it's prior battles and had less then 32 hp. That said in speculation, a trainer might think "oh level 5? this should be fine for Pikachu even though he is pretty beat up." but focus sash gives Snivy the opening and ash's lack of knowledge and arrogance got Pikachu fainted.

Sooo... Plot armour
@@sk4364 I'm not sure it's really plot armour since Ash lost even tho it would've been inconsequential for him to win.
Yes, but the reader/watcher base should be able to critique how certain battles play out if they fail to line up with said script writer's pre-established rules of the world.

At this point game devs can put random cool stuff into their games, sit back, relax, and let Game Theory write the lore for them.
Good Idea
that's what Scott Cawthon is doing, except Idk if it can be considered cool.

ash's pikachu has gained more than enough exp to be lvl 100 when even 1 region is enough to get you to at least 60 and he's been through multiple however apart from johto he's been reset to lvl 1 every new region he's been to, it's been stated the creator does this to give the viewers the illusion that ash's is starting from scratch in every region.
Bro this man legit gave all the battles he is 61 he literally calculated each and every battle
Assuming it had sturdy and somehow also gained rocky helmet then it might stand a chance although idk how rocky helmet calculates dmg
Theory: Pikachu didn't want to absolutely smite him, so he took the dive
The mafia had the battle rigged from the start. Pikachu had to take a dive or Ash's kneecaps were gonna get smashed in.
@@jacobg6628 That assumes that Pikachu isn't working *with* the mafia. I don't see Ash taking money from everyone he beats. That money has to come from somewhere.

That was an interesting video! I'm sorry you had to grind your way through all those episodes. I can barely get past the collective stupidity of Ash and friends in the advanced battle series. Your pain is real.
With the Snivy battle, I'm still calling shenanigans! Pikachu couldn't use his electric attacks and had only iron tail and quick attack. Snivy had leaf tornado, a move that can not be an egg move (unlike leaf storm) and can only be learned at level 16. And I know this because snivy happens to be my favorite pokemon, so I've bred a few to gain egg moves and almost always use ones in my black and white playthroughs.
I'm not a math person, though, so I'm not sure if a weakened, low 60's or 59 level pikachu with only two none STAB moves could still match up against a strong level 16 snivy. I mean, it sounds like he definitely could with his attack stats, though pikachu are not (in my experience, anyways) very defensive. They're kinda brittle, actually. Snivy can take more hits (than a pikachu, at least) because they're more on the defensive scale (adding leech seed, coil and an eviolite can greatly help with the defense, too. I can proudly say that my IV trained snivy, with those moves and item, in an online battle, took a spacial rend from a palkia, defeated it, then took a jugdement from an arceus and defeated it, too.) ....Not sure if that adds anything. I'm just a huge nerd. XD
Another thing to consider is Zekrom sapping all of pikachu's electricity, we dont know what effects that could have regardless of level so all base stats could be degraded to a lower temporary stat. So therefore Snivy could take a Quick Attack and Iron tail and have low df and hp which is why he loses to snivy.
different types of foes would also factor in. like he wouldnt take the same amount of damage from all types of pokemon. judging his level by comparing his ability to battle oponants just by their level is totally ignoring the fact that two different foes AT THE SAME LEVEL would be a DIFFERENT DIFFICULTY because of the different types! so a level 30 water pokemon would be a different difficulty than a level 30 fire or electric type depending on what advantage/disadvantage they have against pikachus type
"Drumroll!"

@@stuartpratt3662 it is right next to matpat on the spreadsheet, I wasn't even looking for it and I saw it. Super obvious location.
Based on how Ash's other Pokémon evolve, there must be substantial off screen grinding going on. That kinda throws a wrench in this whole thing.
The original question and answer still stand. At this point in the anime, if pikachu is still the same pikachu, and the adventure up to this point has not been reset, there is no possible way it should have lost that fight. Giving it more levels from off screen grinding would only make that statement more true. To add on to that, if the levels are consistent with the games levels, pika would be level 100, and likely able to solo carry Ash through basically every fight. Assuming it is level 100 (+), with volt tackle, iron tail, thunder shock, and quick attack.... it can probably spam quick attack through most fights and not be touched until several badges deep into each area. So, the rule of anime applies. Pika is being nerfed for the sake of the story.
@@Gamerboi99 a factor that never gets talked about. In the show pikachu does not respect ash in the start. Badges are required for pokémon to respect and obey
Pikachu just feels bad for new trainers and throws the fight with Snyvee
Yeah this is the most obvious reason why Ash's Pikachu is most likely at level 100 by the end of the Orange islands (at least)
he said in the first episode he would only cover onscreen battles.
Maybe anime levels go way higher and every new region just have higher level pokemon. Pikachu learns thunderbolt at lvl 26 or somewhere around there and thunder at lol 40 ish in game so that would have made him a higher level in the original episodes. Also don't forget when ash powered Pikachu up before the second battle with Brock with that watermill, that stuff like that has to count I doubt the anime is all exp and levels or trainers wouldn't train their pokemon specific ways. Like episodes of fighting pokemon practicing with their trainers ect.. would be irrelevant to air or show that they gotten stronger that way, like Bruno episodes ect.. Nice theory tho
12:30 but when a player make a runtrough they catch more Pokémon and gain more exp not like ash who catches ca.5 Pokémon every region
And always need a Pokédex to make out what a Pokémon is called though they say their names try to play the games where they only squeak

Just watching that clip at the start, I'm positive that Snivy used Leaf Tornado, which it learns at level 15 or 16. I should know; I picked it almost a decade ago. It could've been Leaf Storm, but that's being extremely generous, lol. My point is that there's no way that Snivy was just level 5.
Edit: Just checked the gen 5 movepool. Snivy doesn't learn Leaf Tornado via TM, only level up. That Snivy was beefed up prior to that battle at the very least.
Ash's Pikachu: *exists*
MatPat: *_"Peace was never an option"_*
That doesn't even make sense
There are theories that Trip’s snivy was actually massively over levelled before being given to him I.e. Juniper caught a really high level snivy
@u dope ?
Snivy does learn leaf tornado at lv 16
I literally just left a long comment about just this very subject. Trip gets his first pokemon snivy and already knows leaf tornado? WTF was professor juniper feeding it. But even still Pikachu still should have won.
@@nooneimportantlol6553 He also evolves at that level but he was still a Snivy so at most he could be lvl 15.
@matpat do a theory on this
Well there's also that Pikachu would gain xp from just being in the (all of ashes battles) party if they were awake just a thought
6:51 In my personal opinion, Pokemon Emerald shouldn’t exist. The two game pairs that come with a theme of red and blue are what make Pokemon unique to me.
Theory: ash breeds a new pikachu each region so he can feel like he has a new starter
or the writers nerfed pikachu for plot convenience
Thats why he gets skinnier...
Then why would pikachu know team rocket for each region and have a close connection to ash and know his past and know the same moves and remember every person ash has been friends with and like the same food?
Why is there a link......
WHAT?!

i started watching pokemon black and white ad found out this about pikachu vs snivy battle: pikachu ost his ability to use electric type moves, meaning ash kept wasting turns. and on snivy's turn, snivy just used a basic move, but since pikachu couldn't really attack, pikachu fainted.
the above was concluded by me and my turtle.
Theory: Snivy was a higher level would be 17 when it learns leaf tornado.
Still can't imagine a supposed level 61 lose to a level 17 Snivy. Leaf tornado isn't even super effective and Pikachu's HP should've been super high
@@zera3947 yeah even matpat said that even without the team rocket exp Pikachu would still only be lvl 59 so even little things like that wouldn’t matter Pikachu would still obliterate that Snivy no matter if it was lvl 5 or lvl 17
Snivy held on so it’s trainer wouldn’t worry!

@@benjboiplays5403 it could be possible that when pikachu was overcharged by zekrom, his stat could got lowered, quite possibly temporarely reset, regaining those stat as time went on, so pikachu could have been level 61, but because he was overcharged, it had the stat of a pikachu around lvl 10-20
