Yes, I know I misspoke about the Leaf Stone bit at the end, but the whole "level up in a mossy area" way to get a Leafeon still works with epigenetics. The environment of "mossy" or special areas are acting as the environment triggers to UNLOCK the genetic code. Fighting in a mossy area is forcing the Eevee to evolve in that direction to improve their battle prowess specifically in those environments, hence the genes becoming unlocked.

I watched this video more than 2 years ago and it inspired me to learn more about epigenetics. I was already enrolled in a biotechnology degree in college but I hadn't decided what I was going to specialize in yet (I'm Brazil we don't have majors and minors). After watching this episode of game theory I decided to enroll in an epigenetic course that was facultative for me and later I started working at a lab that did epigenetic research.
Tomorrow I'll be presenting my final project to get my bachelor's degree. The theme of my thesis? EPIGENETIC! All because of a "silly CZcams video about pokemon".
this deserves 40000 more likes, a guy watches a video and inspires him to get a epigenetics degree

Hey guys, did you know that in terms of human companionship, Flareon is objectively the most huggable Pokémon? While their maximum temperature is likely too much for most, they are capable of controlling it, so they can set themselves to the perfect temperature for you. Along with that, they have a lot of fluff, making them undeniably incredibly soft to touch. But that’s not all, they have a very respectable special defense stat of 110, which means that they are likely very calm and resistant to emotional damage. Because of this, if you have a bad day, you can vent to it while hugging it, and it won’t mind. It can make itself even more endearing with moves like Charm and Baby Doll Eyes, ensuring that you never have a prolonged bout of depression again.

Probably because he gets paid more than a teacher...😒😏
Game theory has thorght me more than school ever has
My father, Yi Zhang, who is a Harvard professor who works on epigenetic, just watched your explaination on epigenetics, and he has two things to say.
1.) You did a good job on making the basis of epigenetics understandable by someone who isn’t familiar with it.
2.) But, you simplified to a point where a.) DNA is not locked, it is more whether or not it is accessible by proteins b.) The environment factor does not directly turn genes “on” or “off”, but to affect cofactors that are needed for the enzymatic activities of epigenetic enzymes.
Overall, he said that you did a good job, and I agree that without your explaination, I, nor about a million other people, wouldn’t understand epigenetics at all.
*Weird gloat but understandable*
He isn’t gloating though, I think this person is on to something...
Viking ZeroOne i mean nobody starts off a sentence with describing the specific, high profile job that their father has, and giving their name(hey, just case you know a thing or two about Harvard professors, this one helped birth me), without intending to gloat. Lol. Like dude about me said. Kind of a weird gloat but i get it
My father is unemployed. I still know this though because I have a biochemistry/molecular biology degree, and actually paid attention in class.

Fun fact: I learned more about genes here than during biology classes. I love genetics. And now I have more questions and fun facts to annoy my teacher with :D Thanks MatPat ;)

MatPad: *explains and solves every mystery of pokemon evolution*
Professors: Well I will pretend I didn't saw that and say that evolution happens because of friendship bonds between pokemon and trainer just for a kid to catch a legendary pokemon and beat the league
In Pokémon Master journeys they give a brief explanation to how Eevee evolves, they said Eevee has unique genetics that are broken up with different DNA allowing it to adapt to any stone and be able to have that part of their DNA be activated. Also their was one Eevee who couldn’t evolve because they said that Eevee’s DNA was “too broken” and it wasn’t able to react to any stones.
I come from the future: eevee now evolves to leafeon with a leaf stone, so congrats for the prediction :3

It does not
Where in what game ?!??!?!
11:22 I like how he says “it’s like saying if you breed two cats together you would get a sabortoothed tiger *egg* !”
As if cats lay eggs lmao
Bruh lmao
driftsu Exactly. That's the point my dude XD
RIP dreams
I mean, it's not exactly as if rodents like Pikachu is based on lay eggs either. Also, in the pokemon universe, you can get Meowth eggs, so sabertooth tiger egg makes perfect sense as a tie into a real-world example. The fact that you think you're correcting him when he made a perfectly sensible analogy to prove a point just shows how over-your-head this probably went. when there's even a small chance that you're criticizing someone smarter than you, stop, think about what you're going to say, and then don't say it.
Teaghan Shackelford dude chill I just thought it was funny. I didn’t mean it in a way to criticize him ;-;
I always thought Pokémon evolution was simply a form of metamorphosis, but this actually makes more sense since it's not tied to age.
I often enjoy the series well enough. But I rarely save a video for re-watching later. This video has been added to my favorites list for future reference. Very informative, very cool, and might finally shut up one of my friends about his theories on things. lol
Ironically in Let's Go Eevee, Eevee's pokedex entry literally states that "Eevee's genes are the key to solving the mysteries of Pokemon evolution."
what about shiny eevee its silver but when it evolves in to a vaporeon its purple
@@Sans-si1qn think of a shiny pokemon as a birth defect, just not a bad defect. Like if someone is born with a defect that affects their brain to make them think faster, or better, or changes it so that their skin color is blue.

Coincidentally I just took a college exam on epigenetics and may I say, you are spot on. Good job with your research!
His definition of epigenetics its just very very simplified. There are a few more regulation mechanism also counting into epigenetics
13:27 when you put it like that it makes me feel guilty for catching that charizard yesterday
I would love to see mega-evolution epigenetics explanation.
Maybe they have another set of epigenetics that are locked, but like the environment the mega stones with the bond of the trainer rapidly unlock and bring forth those epigenetics causing them to change form and/or type

@@greatduck5297 can't be because in its mega evolution the baby gets out of the pouch
Funny enough they did mention that the evolution stones produced low levels of radiation which triggered the evolutionary adaptation, some fan-made games even expanded on that.
Pokémon Uranium used the idea in such a way that if an Eevee was exposed to nuclear radiation it evolved in a similar way becoming Nucleon.
Pokémon Insurgence gave Eevee a Mega Evolution which blocked off the effect of the stones, but in exchanged unlocked it's ability to activate the genes and change forms at will.

Do you have a theory on the friendship evolutions? There are some Pokémon that can only evolve when you and the Pokémon max out your friendship. Like Espeon, Umbreon, and Sylveon for example if you teach your Eevee a fairy move and then max out your friendship you get a sylveon, if you want an Espeon, just let it learn psychic moves and say no to learning fairy. Umberon, same thing, but don’t let it evolve until night.
Frosmoth, also a Pokémon that evolves via friendship, but also can only evolve at night. Is that just a magic thing? or was it a magic/science thing?

Correction, Eevee does not evolve into Leafeon by using a leaf stone. It evolves into Leafeon by leveling up in a special area (like near the moss rock in Sinnoh).

Its always a mossy rock whichever region (icy rock for Glaceon), but his point doesn't change

Ok, so that explains why pokemons can evolve by leveling. Stones works like piece of enviorment so this is kind of logical, but what about others kinds of evolution like evolving pokemon while it hold an specific item, like evolution of Gligar. And I'm curious about one thing, specificly about sense of evolution of some species, like Dragonair into Dragonite, or Shelldon into Salamence. Their previous forms has no sence, becouse they often don't even look like their next ones.

I was about to say "what if I left my pokemon at the daycare" and how it would evolve there if it wasn't exposed to harsh battling conditions. Then I realised, they _don't_ evolve when left in a daycare (which I learnt after leaving my Magikarp there until it leveled up *past* it's evolution level and soon when I picked it up, I got a buffed up Magikarp, but no Gyarodos :c ). You can, however, pick up the pokemon from the daycare *before* leveling up to it's evolution level, and then level it up to evolve by - you guessed it - battling. Good job MatPat! Another great theory.
PS: Or is this _really_ MatPat? No cringy joke before the intro? Naaaah this can't be
Except if you get it past it's evolutionary cap and feed it a rare candy without battling. Then it'll evolve without being in battle. But that is also a really specific set of events anyway
@@kayplays1998 To be fair, it could be that Rare Candies trigger the same genes within the Pokemon that would be triggered by battling, just doing it by a chemical stimulus rather than a purely environmental one. @@DeathGodRiku Or better, with Lockstin. If they collab, that'll be the true biggest crossover.
Hahahahhaah I just saw something very hideous! I looked in the mirror! But I am the best CZcamsr of this generation so it is all good! Thanks for you attention dear tzoby
Lol
If we unlock things why haven't I unlocked my brain after trying to use it for years
lmao
Your so so so so so stupid
challenge yourself, do harder brain stuff, see what happens
maybe you just stupid and dont have a brain? jk jk
You either lie about using it for years XD jk
It may seem pretty fantastical when you use a leaf stone to turn into a Leafeon
And find out that together Leafeon, your Eevee needs to level up near Amas rock
mat pat: role intro
me: "watches"
me:what am i getting hacked
Adding to this, Pokemon don't evolve while in day care
And when certain events happen *COUGH POKEMON MYSTERY DUNGEON COUGH*, The evolution gene gets turned off.
And then the pokemon "devolves". Neatt
Well those pokemon are concerned about the sheets not the streets if you know what I'm getting at.
Actually they do, at least in the older games. I accidentally left my surskit in the day care until level 44. Evolved still into a masquerain.
@@CaptainManaFruit Bold of us to assume the day care "cares" for our pokemon
CaptainManaFruit But that surskit only evolved when you leveled up one more time while it’s in your possession. Being with you as a trainer is a stressful situation that forces it to evolve into a better battler for you.
Eevee's DNA color: Rainbow.
死神ASMR 🏳️🌈
The gayest of DNA
That's a lotta pokedex entries!
If I had MatPat as a teacher growing up I'd be on my way to being a Scientist today.
9:43 Love how it shows a Dragon City egg for a Flareon.
Now we're left to wonder how and why the genetic potential to become a Gyarados was in a Magikarp to begin with.
Cause it would constantly goten the crap beaten out of it if you used it in battle thus making its evolution all the more efective
Umm, Japanese folk legend about a fish swimming up a waterfall and becoming a dragon?
Maybe it’s pretending to be stupid so ppl won’t catch it and turn it into a dragon and have it fight till the end?
Stochasticity.
Monsuco
Chinese. But yes.
If you ask me, this means Pokemon evolution isn’t explained by earth science. It obeys the law of a different universe which has a sentient creator and several gods that directly tie to natural phenomenons.
Rat shoots beam of ice
Me: genetics
😂😂😂
EPIgenetics!
genetics it is
This still fits so well! Even in Gen IX!
evolutions for some pokemon is just growth.
charmander's growth: when it becomes a charmeleon it grows the thing that comes out of it's head, when it becomes a charizard it grows wings and grows another thing that comes out of it's head (also each time it "evolves" it gets larger, just like everything does when growing
I always looked at evolutions like the "ageing" of the Pokémon:
Charmander - Childhood
Charmelion - Adolescence
Charizard - Adulthood
They're basically growing.
same
Same but I lered that it naked no see look back to ash and the triko tree
but that doesn't make sense because a pokemon can live all their life without evolving, so it's not growing
Yet in 1 episode with treeko, there was a old treeko, while ash's grovyle was defi younger so can't make sense
Hunter Storm dude rebutted that with ash’s donphan
We had a substitute teacher back in high school when we covered punnet squares and I started talking about epigenetic and the sub had no idea what I was saying plus I think game theory helped me pass science
We should now just ask for him to make another channel for teaching
That substitute teacher probably didn't go to college to be a science teacher. Possibly another type of teacher, possibly not a teacher at all. In most states, you just need a certain number of college credits of any kind to qualify to be a substitute teacher.
I have a question for you mattpatt, have you heard of the game "Bloons Tower Defense", if so, I am going to have to ask that you do a DEEP dive video about the lore of BTD and why the monkeys have to stop the bloons from making it to the end of the track.
Hey mat can you do a theory on where poke candy's come from and how they are made
