I have been on this sorta retro kick lately myself ever since I built up a neo-retro road bike. It's a 1986 Specialized Allez a friend bought new right after college. It now has 2012 Tiagra/Sora mix with a set of cheap Reynolds Stratus Elite wheels. I love it so much that I am selling my carbon "wonder" bike.
I built out my old 1998 Barracuda XC URT frame into a sorta "Frankengravel" with a bunch of parts from bikes that I salvaged or stripped down to build other bikes.
I am loving the whole "get back to the reason we ride" vibe and people restoring or modifying older bikes.

Hey Johnny, that’s great. I’ve found so far the bikes I love the most are the ones I care least about when I’m building them.
I love that vibe too. I feel like I couldn’t have fallen back into bikes at a better time.
All the best from Erie town.

I can relate to the advocacy. I helped to form my town’s Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee which I served on for several years. Every meeting we just rehashed the same tropics over and over with nothing ever getting done. I eventually resigned and soon after the committee dissolved.

I wonder if bicycle advocacy was where the phrase “good intentions pave the way to hell.” came from.
      Merry new year, pal.

Yeah, First question. I'm truly honoured. I'll be honest my dislike of fancy tech is mainly down to me being too poor to buy it 🙁. If I was honest changes in tech allow the bicycle to develop and evolve, which is a good thing. Plus, with any tech, it's not compulsory. Freedom of Choice people ✊

Yeah man… I am too. I think it was a great question. One I thought a lot about before this. Thanks so much for bringing it up. I had a fun time making this episode.

Dude! Those lamps hanging off to the side are very cool. Those kerosene or oil or white gas? Those things are cool as heck! Are those the ones you did a vid on a very long time ago? Those are neat!
    Good video though. Good answers!
I say the town knew what they were doing putting that Erie sign in front of the lake there. Imagine the stories that lake has and all the history behind it. Cool stuff to me!

Kerosene dead flame lanterns formerly used for marking barricades before battery technology. Those 4 were made by Handlan Buck and are marked “City of Erie, Bureau of Water.”
      Thank you.
Yeah they did. Battle of Lake Erie and whatnot. Worth noting that is presque isle bay beyond it. The Presque Isle state park is the land on the other side of, and Lake Erie surrounds all of that.
I’ve always wanted to throw a bit of history into these. Maybe I’ll give it a shot sometime.
Thanks always my friend! Happy rainy ass Wednesday.

@EriebyCycle dang, really? How did you manage to get your hands on those? That is some very cool history behind those lanterns.
I thought that was Presque Isle. That's cool history, too!
Happy Hump Day, Wednesday, friend! I have sunshine and a shot at 50 degrees. Last day as a rainy cold front heads my way.
I dislike the rain myself but we were in severe drought all year. We desperately need it. I know you're sick of it though! I don't blame you. You get a lot of it!

I picked them up here and there at junk shops, and antique shops. I still buy them when I find them... the Erie ones.
It was overcast and in the 50's yeasterday, wet and close to 50 today. I don't mind the rain... but when it's months on end it starts to get to me. @@billywood9717

@EriebyCycle I'm sure it does. It would get to me, too. You just can't have a pleasant day of riding. A simple day. You have to change your attire. Prepare for headwinds. Clean the bike and service the bike more than normal. There is a lot more maintenance. That has to be one of the very few downsides of living in a bay city. Hopefully, it is just an anomaly that doesn't become the new norm.
Down here, fenders aren't as necessary. I myself like my bikes to be as weightless as possible and earo as possible. It's very flat and open here so you get a lot of wind here. Very dry wind. It's more wear and tear on the sinuses than it is the bike for me.
Anyhow... I hope it changes for the better for you. Looking forward to that build your working on. The gravel grinder. Like to see what you come up with on that thing. Did you find the hanger for that fender?

    • @EriebyCycle
      @EriebyCycle  Před 6 měsíci +1

@@billywood9717 the wind can be the worst part here too, especially when it’s wet. I ride home into the westerly winds… sometimes I’ll weave through the neighborhoods to get a break every block of two.
I didn’t find the hanger, but I haven’t been to the shop yet. I’m going to drill a hole in the fender and use a low profile bottle cage screw since the seat stay bridge isn’t drilled the correct way for the hanger, and the zip tie method doesn’t sit right with me. Might finish the bike later today. Before the new year for sure.
