  • Today is 2 years No Beers for me, so we'll make a halfhearted attempt at going over the basket case Raleigh to see where we stand. Check the frame to see if it's bent, clean a few parts, and lay out what we have, and completely forget to make a list of what's missing. Oh well. Might have a donor bike lined up, so we can follow up on that later in the week.

    Congratulations on the 2 years no beers! Recently stumbled upon this channel as a returning cyclist myself after being off the bike for 18 years since i was a kid. Videos are great especially the 'saved from trash' bikes and built from bits you have lying around. Keep up the great content. Your friend Stu, from South Australia

    Love old lugged frames. My old Scwhinn Traveler road bike and Schwinn High Sierra (one of the first commercial mountain bikes) had sweet lugs on them. The steel frames were heavy as hell but fun to ride.

    Hi Josh, absolutely loving the bike build videos. You cannot go wrong with a bike called the "Su...perb"! (one of my favourite words😂).
    Raleigh was the brand I grew up with in the 60s & 70s and I remember my dad singing their praises back then. Like you, he would do bike builds in his garage from all the stuff he had lying around or was given, but sadly his engineering skills skipped a generation and didn't get handed down to me. If it's beyond changing a chain or fixing a puncture I tend to use my local bike shop (helps to keep them in business I suppose).
    I particularly enjoyed your explanation of the frame alignment tool, and great videography skills there as well...👏🏻
    I had a look at Raleigh on Wiki, and in the historic models tab there's a photo of a green Superbe complete with a massive front dynamo light. Maybe you could hang one of your big lanterns on the light holder instead...😂
    All the best, Dave

    • @EriebyCycle
      @EriebyCycle  Před 5 měsíci +1

      Hi Dave!!! I absolutely read that first part in your voice. You have some sort of magic charm that makes me smile every time you say that (Su...perb.)
      Thanks so much for the kind words. Interesting story about your father. While you may not have received his mechanical skills, you did seem to pick up his love of bicycles.
      I do have a kerosene bicycle lamp... but I do not have the clamp to attach it to the bike. My intentions are to eventually build a wheel set with a modern (or vintage if I can find it) dynamo hub to have a vintage bike with a modern lighting system.
      Thanks always, Dave! All the best from Lake Erie.

    • @billywood9717
      @billywood9717 Před 5 měsíci

      @EriebyCycle yeah, but you have all the original parts for a full restore. Hopefully it goes well and there's no hiccups.
      At first glance, I said to myself, I'd make that fixie, but then you dug through the box and then I knew it has to be a full restore. Should be fun to do!!

    • @EriebyCycle
      @EriebyCycle  Před 5 měsíci +1

      Well, I have parts to make it a mish mash of off colored Raleigh parts... so I don't think I'd call it a restore. (maybe I'm just thinking of the word "restore" differently?) I definitely want to keep it as close to original Raleigh parts as possible. Going to see about that step through donor bike tomorrow. We shall see how it goes.

    Hey hey. Clamp on your crescent wrench to the bearing cup, then clamp the wrench in your table vice, turn the frame to undo the bearing cup. Hope that helps. Worked for me.

    • @EriebyCycle
      @EriebyCycle  Před 5 měsíci

      Hey James… that’s a great idea! My problem is mostly that these cups turn into the frame far enough that it’s tough to get a solid bite on it. That and I’d have 6 tons of shit falling off my bench that isn’t bolted to the floor. I work at a local bike shop on Saturdays (seasonally.) I’ll head over there and see if they have the correct tool.
      Still… a great idea! I’m going to keep that one in my back pocket. Thank you for sharing it!!!

    just watched the yesterday video.. start got me worked up with that expensive bike... oh yeah this is better.
    I have crackheads down the street who steal and abandon bikes.. cops often let me keep parts so they don't have to deal with them. I have a 930 with a 99 XT-deore LX build and a Manitou fork I think I'm about $137 in on it but I'm not posting about...
    I got a Nishiki rockhound with a stuck BB and a mismatched freewheel 7 speed a golden arrow 105 and luckily a SAKAE RINGYO mts-101 and MT mini bar
    I use a steak knife on crown races. they come off super easy..
