  • Unwillingness to compromise, and time constraints put me over budget for the #cheapbikebuildoff - BUT - can this basket case Raleigh Superbe save the day?
    I think not.

    I’m blushing. Thanks so much for the kind shout out! Yeah Cheap Bikes is my middle name lol. Smart move not compromising on the Schwinn. I know it’s easy to get caught up in what others are doing and want to play along even if not in our best interest. As for the Raleigh I’m looking forward to seeing that built… whenever you get around to it. As I mentioned on IG I’ve had a few of those but never kept them. Can’t even recall how they came into my possession but I never bought any of them. At the time I was more into fat tired American cruisers. I should have kept one. You going through the Raleigh parts box reminded me of some of the stuff I kept and used on other bikes. Yes that bracket is for a headlight. The headlight had a handle that you’d use to pull it off the bracket and carry the light around like a lantern. That’s one of the parts I scavenged. Had it on my John Deere themed Schwinn. Anyway thanks again and congrats on your grades.

      Absolutely. I think the way you approach bikes is the spirit of the cheap bike build off. And that is super important for people who want to get into building bikes to see since the cost of entry can be a huge deterrent. Plus the sheer amount of time you have been doing this and filming it shouldn’t go unnoticed in my book.
      I’m too fussy to compromise. I notice every single thing that isn’t functioning perfectly… I think because I’ve spent my life as some sort of mechanic, and that’s my job to notice.
      Thanks a bunch! It should be interesting to see where this school stuff will take me.
      All the best from Lake Erie! Looking forward to your next adventure.

    The Raleigh (sp?) will be amazing! Too bad about having the time, but I get it. Good job with your grades!

      Hi Jason. Thanks for the kind words. I’m pretty hot to get it going… so maybe I’ll be able to find a donor bike to get this rolling quickly, and make the upgrades later. I’m sure my time isn’t as crunched as I make it out to be. We’ll see what happens.

    My whole bike thing is a cheap bike build off. That Raleigh looks the same colour as my Triumph from the 70's. I like to rub my frames with a Scotch Brite pad and linseed oil to protect and keep the rusty patina. Well done on school n words n shit. Don't get too hung up on the price. If it's over 6 months old then value is halved at least 😀

      @EriebyCycle  Před 5 měsíci +1

      You know… I used to use a mix of linseed oil and kerosene to preserve the kerosene lanterns I restored… and it worked extremely well.
      And I never seem to understand how to price anything correctly.

    Building a bike from the frame up can get pricy ....when I get a frame I like I usually look for a donor bike and strip it down and build up the frame set

    • @EriebyCycle
      @EriebyCycle  Před 5 měsíci +1

      Dang good idea. I typically use whatever junk I get for free. I seem to be a magnet for it.

    • @yardsalecycles
      @yardsalecycles Před 5 měsíci +1

      @EriebyCycle ya once people found out I worked on bikes, I started getting tons of broken-down bikes and bike parts they didn't want anymore I build a schwinn cruiser for the challenge under $100 but didn't want to use my parts bin but might build another bike with the remaining amount

    • @EriebyCycle
      @EriebyCycle  Před 5 měsíci +1

      @@yardsalecycles two for the price of one! I love it! I’ll have to have a look first chance I get.

    You can build a cheap bike - I have bikes I have salvaged from Skips ! This is an extreme case - there is a place in the industry for somebody to do this on a commercial scale !
    Bring all your crap to me and I can build a super bike for somebody out of it !!!
    Now you need to be a person who is happy with a good cheap sturdy workhorse bike - not a super fancy bike that's a different thing of course !

      A good cheap sturdy workhorse is my favorite kind of workhorse.
