I agree.Ive come to the conclusion the past couple years that I often figure things out as I’m talking with someone about something.

It would be a shame not to have the "handsome layer of sophistication" on the fork crown, but whichever you choose, I'm sure it'll work out just fine.

I think I’m going to try to use the chrome one, with the plan to replace it with the correct, sophisticated one when it becomes available to me.

I fell in love with a 84' Raleigh Crested Butte, my battle is now with reverse spring breaks. M70 A1 type.
I’m just beginning my dive into these interesting machines. I’m yet to learn what that is, but now I know I have to find out!

Lol your swimming in parts down there. S-Blerps lab on the brink of destruction. Lol! I say the chrome fork because the chrome would really set off the rat look. I know the feeling of this build... so much trial an error. Fabrications. Back an forth with swapping parts. All the chaos!
I literally just went through this. I finally finished this bike and cleaned shop. Put everything away. Organized and clean. I've never felt better! A break that was much needed. Liberating type of feeling. So if you disappear for awhile, man I completely get it!

I guess this is what normal people mean when they’re throwing around buzz words and talk about how they love a challenge. This seems to be where the fun and excitement lives.

Can you take the bearing cups out and grind a couple of millimetres off the frame top and bottom? then put the cups back in and use a thinner washer on top . Might gain you about 6 -7mm 👍 just a thought.
I suppose I could, but I can guarantee that I wouldn’t be happy with the results. I have a problem with perfection. Even though it’s a pile of junk, it needs to be perfect. It’s a character flaw of mine I guess.
How's the brake reach on the newer Raleigh fork or the blue fork? Those seem like smaller problems to surmount than the reach on the chrome fork!

I can relate. You solve one problem but it creates a new one or two. You think how far down this road do I want to go or should I go back and take a different route. Good luck with the swap. We have a pretty good one here. Draws people from all 4 of our surrounding states.

Hi Erie, Why don`t you put spacers on the chrome fork instead of cutting and re-threading, or is that a stupid question?
Hiya. I don't see my original response, so... Not a stupid question at all. Actually a perfectly reasonable solution. The only risks seem to be the potential to look goofy, or raise the handlebars too high. On the other hand it could wind up looking great, and have the bars wind up just right.
I think threaded forks look trick with spacers
One of those spacer/bell mount would look nice, deliberate and unique. might need a few extra one to help position it too. @@EriebyCycle
I have this same bike in original condition and all the parts wheels with 3hub styrmey archer hub and front wheel Dynamo and lights etc..
I tried to buy one over the summer a few towns over in NY... but it was facehole market place, and the seller was a flake. I'll bet yours is a beauty!
Also the groove that you grinded on the fork tube is actually a lock-fork mechanism original fork has on the left side. Lol old school anti-theft protection ;)

Easy fix would go Retromod. Since it’s just a ratbike, Buttttt, Yeah, pre 80’s Raleigh is just a can of worms that I would not dare open, oh and peugeot’s too.
You aren't kidding! I had to cobble a bottom bracket together for a friend's POOOoooo-ZHOW! right when I was just learning about bikes. Great experience. Big pain in the ass.
fix the blue step thru up with the fattest tires you can fit ditching the fenders and get it out of there before it's sacrificed to the unholy gods of the parts bin.
I haven't touched my Chesp bike buildoff frame and have already been riding one for 5 weeks that I found and fixed to my liking for $40 and picked up another for $30 to flip nearing the same build with another $30 invested and some time.
might sacrifice the Nishiki Rockhound in the end.
The big problem is tires in 650a are pretty limited anymore. I could put standard 26” (559) wheels on it to open up the tire choices, but the brake reach problem would be worse. I do have a 3 speed coaster brake for another project though.
650a = 26 x 1-3/8
I would be tempted to make an adapter to lower the brakes.

@@EriebyCycle im a diesel mechanic for a living.. my tool boxes and work area at work are organized and clean.. but at home when im working on bikes or anything else.. if it ends up on the bench.. it lives on bench for a while.. I have to change that..

It's not a great idea to thread a steer tube beyond the absolute minimum amount. The stem wedge can crack the tube at this weakened threaded section. This happened to me. That concave round disk fork I rode a Raleigh through Europe on a bike having that fork 1977!
