      Yes and No. Nintendo isn't brilliant at backwards compatibility and there's been consoles where there's been no support NES-SNES-N64-Gamecube but from Gamecube to Wii, yes, Wii to Wii U, yes but Switch was a different beast. Same with the handhelds. So it all depends on how Nintendo is going to play this going forward. Personally I think at least one gen of backwards compatibility would be ideal. But at that point, unless Nintendo has new successful ideas like Splatoon in Japan, it's selling another Mario Kart, Animal Crossing, Zelda, Mario so it's more iterative than revolutionary and finding the right balance between new, fun idea, classic gameplay and avoiding gimmick-only gameplay. For their style of game, Switch is still decent enough especially with older 1080p TVs so as long OG Switch is still selling, I dunno, maybe it's just best to keep on keeping on.

      “ Nintendo isn’t brilliant at backwards compatibility “ except there the ones who invented it. With the Gameboy. Which only lost access since the early DS. Nintendo is good at coming up with an idea. But bad at taking that idea across all their consoles. Basically i we might not even get a switch next time around, they end up holding patents on it and won’t introduce it again for like 20 years after they finally start collapsing then they give all games and ideas back again acting like it is the next big thing just so people will come back to buying. But after all i just said i hope they change.

    My FAVORITE selling point of the Wii was the ability of backwards compatibility for GameCube games. I also enjoyed that the Gameboy Color, Advance, DS, 2DS, and 3DS had backwards compatibility for the previous system. I'm with Bob on the backwards compatibility, the Series X and PS5 have huge libraries from previous generations and it's basically the bulk of the library. People will want to have the latest and greatest and see the games they know they love in a better experience. It running better, maybe better textures or something, is more than enough to get people onto a new generation. There's also something to be said that day one you have a library to play with, a lot of people wait for next gen until there are more games out so they aren't stuck on the same 3 games for 6 - 8 months. I haven't seen a time where backwards compatibility made a game system sell less, and only outrage when it was left out.

    • @DMGamanda
      @DMGamanda Před rokem +2

      Well you just said exactly what my comment said only 10x better. 😅 I totally agree, if it wasn’t backwards compatible i think that would be a thing that would seriously negatively impact me buying a new console. The backwards compatibility on my ps5 was a major factor in upgrading to me cos as you say it isn’t just being able to play your old games but being able to play them on better hardware. Also quite a few devs actually did upgrades - paid not like full price - so still money to be made from that and new people buying the old games upgraded or not at full price too. And again i agree with what you said about wanting to add to your library with the new games. I think it would be insane to not do that now esp when the two other major players have. 😊

      @ThomastheDankEngine8900 Před rokem +1

      @@xXZombieHunter0802Xx “we want backwards compatibility, but we just don’t want to pay for it”.
      The PlayStation 2 chip in the PlayStation 3 is the reason the cost was $600.
      The sales for PS3 didn’t pop off until the slim model which had zero PS2 backwards compatibility to speak of, because gamers only care about new games.
      Had the PlayStation 3 launched at $400 with zero BC besides the PS1 backwards compatibility included in all models, it would have destroyed the 360, since again, gamers don’t give a damn about backwards compatibility/old games.
      Want proof?
      The Switch and PlayStation 4 have sold gangbusters and have zero backwards compatibility on the physical side, and digitally you could only buy a few legacy games on PS4 (which you can’t even do on Switch).
      The Wii, PlayStation, and DS sold gangbusters and either didn’t have BC or it was so irrelevant to its success that it was later removed.
      If gamers genuinely cared about backwards compatibility and old games, consoles like the PlayStation 3, Wii U, and Xbox Series X/S would be smash hits, rather than flops.
      Any gamer who cares about backwards compatibility/old games is an anomaly and sales figures prove this time and time again.

      The only way it wouldn't be backwards compatible is of it completely changed like from N64 to GameCube. I could see that if they launched a VR system it would not have backwards compatibility because it's so much different that the previous games wouldn't have been designed with that in mind. So it works make sense for it to not be backwards compatible in that case.

    The only thing stopping me from modding my Switch, was the feeling that Nintendo was going to make this current account system the new standard and forward compatible with what ever comes next. I have bought over 350 games on the current Switch digitally. I have never bought so many games for any platform or console (including Steam) ever. Nintendo combining their handheld and console division as one; not only was brilliant for them, but also for the industry. It is probably the only console; in which I feel has sense of ownership of my purchases (with the exception of NSO). Whether it will be "challenging" to implement or not; with the kind of money and records the current Switch is setting, as well as 1. their boldness that will still be able to sell current gen Switch games for at least a few more years (based on Doug Bowser's recent quotes), 2. the fact that they typically make the next iteration of a new concept console backwards compatible, as well as contradicting quotes from Miyamoto that backwards compatibility is easier than ever to implement and 3. NVIDIA IS BACKING THEM UP; then Nintendo would be arrogantly foolish not go out of their way to ensure backwards compatibility is a day one and always available feature in the next gen Switch (and yes keeping the hybrid form factor as a core feature as well making it notably more powerful). Also, your point about all these indie devs being left behind in the transition, is very valid. No reason at all for them exclude this feature; as it would hurt too many parties; including themselves. I would feel less incentive to stick with Nintendo; if they did not honor my purchases. I will spend the extra money to get what ever Steam Deck alternative that is available (which still honors the 48 games I bought in the last 20 years). Also, permanent backwards compatibility would eliminate the lame excuse of NSO; forcing them to be a subscription service that offers a rotation of current games to try out each month, rather than retro games.

The second screen attaches in handheld mode and comes with a hinge and have a top-bottom screen similar to a DS, it can be docked and 2 joy-con rails will be given and slide it onto the display similar to a Wii U. The camera module can have a rear and front facing camera with microphone, as well as allowing to be detached when docked. Their can also be a 3D screen with a 3D slider too.

The reasoning as to why they believe backwards compatibility might be difficult is because the Tegra X1 is on a different architecture than the rumored Tegra X2 with DLSS. The features of DLSS need an entirely new architecture, and if the rumors are true, then it would be difficult without also including the X1, which would make the cost go up.

The same with the wii been able to play gambecube games and the wii u been able to play wii games (even GameCube if moded ofcurse). Not only Nintendo in this matter, since the xbox series can play almost all the previous generations of games. For me, the Switch is about portability, so I don't use it as much because I mostly play PC games, but I like to have the option there for different situations. What could also happen is what we see now with the Nintendo Account Online where old games are "emulated" in the new console. However if it's under the same umbrellas as the switch, new switch but better, it will (like the DS or Gameboy).

    To everyone saying it’s not obvious the choice Nintendo could make, the switch is also a Nintendo handheld. Every Nintendo handheld since the Gameboy color except for the dsi was backwards compatible for at least 1 generation. So there’s a major sign that they would go the backwards compatibility route.

    Companies should leak stuff like this so the communities argue about whether consoles should have a feature or go a certain direction and then the company can make their decision on what would be most well received (and profitable). I.e. if most people said backwards compat would convince them to buy a console.

    You can make any switch your ‘primary’ switch and deregister it to make a different one your primary as many times as you want. I do it all the time. You deregister it on your profile in the eshop. Then sign into the eshop of the switch you want to make your primary. There is no limit to how often you can switch back and forth.
    You can deregister a console as your primary on the website but you can only do that once a year not once in a life time. That option is for if you lose your primary switch and need to replace it so you don’t have the console itself to deregister on the eshop.
    You would only have to call Nintendo if say you lost your switch, bought a new one, deregister your old one on the site so you can make your new on the primary, then lost THAT switch within a year so you can’t deregister on the website. Then you’d have to call Nintendo to do it for you.

    My theory since practically the launch of the switch has been that Nintendo should release the Switch POWER DOCK, an accessory that gives it a graphical boost. Games can be optimized foe the Power Dock, or new games be exclusive for it. Then they can release a new switch model that has the same power as the dock and the original model, but doesn't need to be docked for all of its power to be used.

    Nintendo's been good about home consoles being backwards compatible with the previous generation, starting with the Wii. Yeah, the Switch needed to change things but for better or worst, they ported a lot of the best Wii U games to it. Whatever the successor to the Switch may be, it will have to be backwards compatible because Nintendo just can't abandon the Switch cards and Joycons. I believe the next home console will be a better Switch. Not necessarily a generic Switch Pro but a more powerful and refined Switch, potentially slightly redesigned.

    I am curious why we are discussing backwards compatibility so much and how it is not a good market strategy, and not discussing how Xbox and Playstation did go with backwards compatibility from last Gen to current gen. PC gaming is backwards compatibille in this day and age, and if Nintendo does not go that route, they will piss off a huge percentage of their base. Better performance, and better future games will bring people over in time. Any company now that does not bring current gen games with them to next gen will get backlash.

    With backwards compatibility it is just a good option. Like with a normal console you spend like half a grand on a brand new console and you get it for Christmas for your kid. Do you think a normal family will buy a regular Xbox or PlayStation or spend more money for some random game their kid might not like. It lets everybody have something to play when they get their new console and it helps previous generation games still sell. Someone who skipped the switch generation and goes right to the second could grab Mario Odyssey or breath of the wild, these very great games can keep being sold to a new audience where if you have to buy it again it honestly wouldn’t sell well except for the people who missed out like with the Wii U generation. Like I own a Wii U and haven’t touched it or bought any games really for it. It’s just for HDMI for Mario party 8 really now.
    Backwards compatibility is just a nice thing. Cause everybody deserves to play their new console the day the get it.

    Handhelds had backwards compatibility GB GBP then GBC. GBP was like a GBSlim. On the GBC you can play GB on there. GBA you can play GB GBC and GBA on there. GBA to GBASP to GBMicro. GBMicro only did GBA and GBASP did all like the GBA. DS and DSLite had GBA backwards compatibility. DSi only did DS then when the whole line of 3DS and 2DS came it was backwards compatible with DS and there were rare DSi games where you needed a camera. There were a few games only working on New3DS so 3DS on New 3DS. You were able to transfer your digital games from the DSi to 3DS and 3DS to New 3DS. Besides that you were still able to play the physical games down the road.
    Consoles completely different only 2 consoles that had backwards compatibility are the Wii and WiiU. Play GC on Wii and play Wii on WiiU. Other consoles depended on what 3rd party product you had to play on same thing.
    With the Switch being a hybrid though, I see backwards compatibility for sure digitally. I say it depends if it’s going to be a home console or another hybrid for physical backwards compatibility. If the switch had 3DS backwards compatibility, as in the cartridges and /or the cartridge slot were different I’m sure there would’ve been a little more sales difference with a good library of 3DS games. Plus transferring data from your 3DS to the Switch making more options and not having to carry a handheld and hybrid if individuals still play DS to the 3DS titles. That could’ve made the Switch practically a DS player like the GameBoy Player for the GC.
    I overall hope the next gen is going to have some backwards compatibility for physical games in a way. Whether you attach or connect something in a way.

The new “gimmick” is the Nintendo V Switch; an extra $100, it comes with something similar to those ray ban looking vr glasses. New releases have better graphics in tv and handheld, plus vr mode. This way they could re-release the switch games with enhanced graphics and a vr mode. Then they could sell a beefier $4-500 compatible headset as an accessory that compares to the quest.

I would hope they do have the compatibility though, for people who need to save up for the new games after buying the new system. At least they would have something to play in the meantime.
    I'll have to pay attention to gaming systems again to find out what is going on with that. I stopped playing any games since the original PlayStation because of extreme vertigo with 3D games. also if you get people to buy the next system and it is BC with switch games it allows Nintendo to get more money from the new system because the person went and bought the new system to play their old games and that person might more inclined to buy new games so I think they 100% have to try to make the new system BC. Im not buying metroid dread more HD version when I have it already. They just need to make it so its a very seamless thing where all the games are already on their eshop and they just merge that over to the new system and the cart games just need maybe an update or something.

    @heathholley2605 Před rokem

    I feel like Nintendo's in a really unique position where they have a LARGE fanbase of people that like to play their older games and will hold onto older handhelds or frequently emulate them. The Switch combined that handheld audience with their home console audience. However, backwards compatibility on the Switch isn't a super realistic option for games made on the DS and 3DS, because of the lack of 2 screens. It can be worked around, but they won't do it. The Switch 2 could be their workaround for this, whether it has a second screen, some sort of Wii U setup where you can use the switch both docked and undocked, or maybe some sort of streaming situation. This could be their big backwards compatible nintendo machine that simultaneously attracts people that want the next Switch, and people that just want to retro game.
    I think the slow rollout of these Nintendo Online retro collections are maybe foreshadowing this. They can add as many Gameboy games, N64 games, even Gamecube and Wii games as they want, but once they work their way up the timeline into DS, 3DS, and even Wii U games, they won't be able to effectively emulate those on the Switch. Queue the Switch 2.

    A 3Dified Switch is not far fetched. I keep thinking they are going to implement that parallax effect that a some Android tablets and phones did unsuccessfully a couple years ago. It would kind of work on a Nintendo console. They can capitalize on the AR / VR craze without doing a full blown headset. It would also make sense for them to upgrade the controller to recognize individual fingers and add a depth sensor for body tracking when docked. This could bring over a lot of VR titles without the risk of going all in on a headset. I think developers would love it because they would have another platform to sell VR titles. If enough people were to buy those games they could build off of it and launch a headset at some point. Aside from all of that I think they'll bring a camera to the front to do in-game video chat with like Snapchat filters.

      While it's a novel idea, I don't think we'll see anything VR/AR related until the whole system could be built into a pair of light weight sunglasses that cost $300. No wires, no setup hassle, no controllers, no screen door effect, and no physical limitations like 'must be required to stand.' Basically the power of the next gen VR headsets with Windows Hololens technology all crammed into a pair of red Oakley's. Nintendo will definitely be the company to produce it but I'm thinking 2050 at least if not a lot longer. Cloud computing would definitely help relieve hardware limits now that I think about it, so maybe closer to 2040.

    I think that even though they make a lot of money on the switch rereleasing old games, they won’t make nearly as much if they ported the same games to the next console. The adoption rate of games on the switch was so high. All the people who bought skyward sword, Kirby’s return to dreamland, donkey Kong tropical freeze, etc. aren’t gonna buy it on the switch 2. It’s too soon. Maybe I’m wrong but I think starting fresh when the console that came before it was such a big success. With the Wii u being such a disaster it didn’t need backwards compatibility because not as many people had the games. All those Wii U ports feel like new games to so many people. The switch 2 will have a harder time selling games like that

  • @EchanteDante
    @EchanteDante Před rokem

    I truly hope that the Switch 2 doesn’t have a foldable screen. That is just asking for so many issues. Not only does it make the console infinitely less durable…but also just simply opening and closing the console is slowly breaking it because those screens are made to only handle opening and closing a limited number of times. Which sure may not be a problem for everyone but for someone who is constantly playing their switch on the go and going back and forth between handheld and docked gameplay…that could make it a more likely scenario.
