Italy's Scariest Hike

  • Well, that was terrifying.
    Piazzetta Piz Boe in the Italian Dolomities is consistently rated as an extremely difficult via ferrata. That's accurate - mostly because the majority of the hike is just a vertical climb up slick rock face, with few holds and insane amounts of exposure. But you know we love a good challenge!
    This was one of our favorite hikes in the Dolomites, and definitely one we will never forget!
    DISCLAIMER: We do not recommend attempting this via ferrata without plenty of experience and proper gear. As always, hike and climb at your own risk.

    What's next, everest? You guys are killing me, I can barely watch. What I find incredibly awesome is that you have each other to share this with. Of all your incredible experiences, I find that to be the most incredible. There are only a handful of people willing to take on these challenges, but that you found each other is really amazing. I love that.

      Haha Gary we were hoping the same thing! There is no freaking way that we would have wanted to climb back down that beast! Fortunately, the path down was the typical hiking path that most people take up, and was very pretty and comfortable to descend thanks to some nice switchbacks. ❤️

      Haha ya these hard via ferratas can play with your mind a bit. On the one hand, there's this miraculous metal cable 3000 feet of the ground that makes you feel grateful and safe. On the other hand, if the cable breaks you're falling 3000 feet. One thing for sure -- it's a heck of a rush! ❤️

      Haha yes! For me, standing at the bottom looking up was actually the scariest part. It didn't look quite as steep on camera, but when I looked up I honestly didn't quite see how it was climb-able. I actually felt better once we got up a couple hundred feet up on the wall because then I knew we could do it, but then Elise got more scared because she worried her arms might give out! Overall, though, the nervousness ultimately made it even more fun and unique! --A

    Well done you two! Tomasselli and Piazetta are great, classical routes for via feratta. There are so many more though, in the circle with a 20 miles radius from where you've done those two there are around 70 of them. Only looking straight back from the wall you have the Padon ridge , VF delle Trincee on volcanic rock, which has some interesting galleries along the way and then, Marmolada with VF Punta Pena and VF Eterna Carote which are ascending on different ridges to the highest peak in the Dolomites. Next time visit Cortina, there are some great routes in Tofana and one very difficult in Faloria, I dare to say more technical than Piazetta (VF Sci Club 18). Congratulations, this was a very finely documented adventure. You two are fun to watch, very genuine and great with camera work. Wished I was that good. Anyway, wish me good weather because I am off for two weeks starting next week, in the Dolomites. Piazetta is on the list, that would be my 3rd ascent of this particular one. I absolutely love it!

    Hi guys. Awsome video again. I'm here in the dolomites at my house every summer and ski season. I have a top tip for via ferrata. If you take with you a static loop and two karabiners you are then able to clip in and take a well earned rest , hands free. I do this a lot. Try a sports ferrata , if you have time. They are short and have a variety of demanding climbing situations. I can recommend Clap Varmost and Villa Sentina my local ones. Enjoy and keep posting. Darren 🇬🇧

    • @LiveHardxLoveHard
      @LiveHardxLoveHard  Před rokem +1

      You're right about that, Will! When I looked at how vertical and slick that thing was, the first thing I told myself was just be safe. And in a lot of places, that meant using those cables without remorse 🤣. Love that you're planning to work up to this kind of climb with gradual exposure training, because that's the part that gets people. If you did every move on this climb close to the ground it would be a very hard workout, but you could probably do it today. However, the high exposure makes people severely over-grip and, as you say, get shaky and exhausted and that's where the trouble starts. So just doing normal training while also gradually getting used to big-drop exposure will have you in perfect condition for all of these hikes -- and we can't wait to hear about it when you do them! --A

      @@LiveHardxLoveHard Before planning a vacation to Cuba I suggest checking with the Department of State for the most updated USA “Travel to Cuba” info. I think it shouldn’t be too difficult to get the proper authorization given that Adam is an educator. That much said, Cuba is a very beautiful island that for the most part is stuck in the 50’s. Travel to the inner parts requires lots of time & patience. You’ll find Cuban’s are very friendly, warm spirited and all around hospitable. The music & food is fantastic!
      Based on what I’ve seen in your travels I suggest staying in Havana where there’s plenty to see & not as difficult to get around.

      1. Old Havana (Habana Vieja)

    This is very well filmed. Congrats on the amazing footage! A few comments: this is not a hike, any via ferrata is a climbing! I have just returned from the Dolomites, where I did six ferratas in the Passubio region (south Dolomites, bordering Veneto) and one further north in Parcines. I always carried my hiking poles in the backpack because they were very useful on the hiking down, which is so punishing on the knees. I notice that you did not, any reason why?? Also, my local guide taught me how to “ski” down the huge scree chutes. That technique was such a blessing on the way down, as it saved so much time and effort! Did you guys do that?? Another unforgettable and amazing thing about the Dolomites are the rifugios!! It never ceased to amaze me that almost everywhere, high up the mountains there was a cosy rifugio with excellent homemade food, cold beer and flawless italian espresso!!

We generally didn't feel like we needed ours, but when we were descending Tomaselli they sure would have been nice. We love "skiiing" on scree as long as there is no one below us, but on most of our Dolomites descents it seemed like there were people below hiking up, and of course we wouldn't want to kick a rock down toward them. Gradually, over the years, I just started adding a little bit more exposure here and there, and pretty soon things that used to scare me seemed totally ok, and things that seemed way out of reach seemed potentially doable. Of course I'll probably never be sitting and eating snacks over 3000 foot drops like Adam does, but gradual exposure training really has helped a lot to overcome my fear of heights. Maybe you could just start with things that are a little bit scary, like crawling (so you know you won't fall even if you get vertigo) to look over the edge of cliff on a hike, and then take it gradually from there? ❤️ --E

      Thanks so much, Lynn -- it definitely helps that we make all of our own music, because if we don't already have the right song for the mood we can just write it! ❤

      Thanks Susan! Really glad this crazy climb came through on film. In person those vertical drops were so freaking scary! But also, of course, what made it so fun! ❤️

      So true, Joseph! Can you imagine the effort it must have taken to set the cable in that crazy vertical rock face? Couldn't be more grateful to the badasses who did that for all the rest of us to enjoy! ❤️

    You guys keep upping your game each time. I keep wondering how you'll top the previous one and you seem to keep doing it and this time with bonus llamas!

      OMG so glad you saw the llamas! We were worried everyone would click off before the very end, and those llamas were one of the awesomest parts of the whole day!! ❤️

    What a great hike ! In such a beautiful place, great video (it is so wonderful crystal clear and steady ) did you guys move there ? Trad climbing needs to be next I would say you guys are ready , thanks for sharing !

      @LiveHardxLoveHard  Před rokem

      Thanks Larry! We totally agree about the trad climbing -- Adam is getting a couple of experienced mentors to take him out on some climbs, and hopefully by next spring we'll be ready to go it alone on a few epic hike and climbs!! ❤️

    Very impressive upper body strength. Had to have had jelly arms at the end of that. Beautiful views and that soup looked delicious.

      @LiveHardxLoveHard  Před rokem +1

      You're totally right, Angela. My arms were completely cooked by the time we got to the top, and even Adam said his arms were tired and he can do like 30 pull ups. But the soup and cappuccino made it all worthwhile! ❤️

    I just wish I was out there climbing mountains with you guys instead of here dealing with every single person. It's just one of those days at work office workers by the way love the video

      Haha that's ok, if it's any consolation we're both back at work now too 🥲 We still have one more video to edit and post from Europe, but geographically we're here in LA and both finishing the end of our first very long week of work appointments since the trip. We all gotta retire already and adventure full time!! ❤️

    After all these wonderful adventures and extreme climbing, California hiking is going to be too easy and unexciting for you two. You will have to do Everest next or some of the big hikes in Alaska. :)

    • @LiveHardxLoveHard
      @LiveHardxLoveHard  Před rokem +2

      Haha you're not wrong about Alaska, Casey! We really want to get up there for some big hikes and hopefully even Denali. But we also have some big plans for SoCal as well -- we just need to get trad climbing certified so we can go after a few of the really crazy peaks were we'll need to be bring all our own ropes and gear. If we keep making progress on our climbing, hopefully that'll happen by next spring or summer! ❤️

      Haha that is absolutely the dream, Shirlee, along with climbing some 20k and higher mountains! Now whether we have the ability to get good enough to do those things is another question, but we're definitely going to try! ❤️

    Absolutely awesome! Thank you for sharing such incredible footage of your crazy scary hikes and climbing! I get to see things I would NEVER have been able to see!:) Also, how do they put up those cables and a bridge like that OMFH and who does it the first time?? How are they tested for saftey...?
    Have you guys ever seen a cougar or bear?
    Yeah umm no bueno for me LoL! Thanks again, you guys are super human! :)

    • @LiveHardxLoveHard
      @LiveHardxLoveHard  Před rokem +1

      Yes Lorina! We have encountered bears multiple times, and on our Sequoia Alta Peak Traverse video we actually show one that Adam practically ran straight into as he rounded a boulder! As for the via ferrata systems, they were mostly installed originally by Italian soldiers during WWI so they could climb the highest peaks for strategic purposes. That generation was crazy brave! Pretty sure there's someone who tests them for safety, but not sure who! Anyway, very glad you're enjoying the vids. ❤️

    How fantastic guys! How scary even though your clipped in that definitely has to be a adrenaline rush for sure. Adam is right he has developed the upper body strength to handle that much better than Elise. Jellybean your going to need to hit more of those chin up bars if Adam keeps doing this to you. You were amazing cutie. So brave! Thanks so much for sharing another outstanding vlog on the honeymoon of a lifetime. Love you guys! Be safe and have a great week. ❤️

    • @LiveHardxLoveHard
      @LiveHardxLoveHard  Před rokem +1

      Haha it's so true, Larry! Before we even got down from this hike, I had already made a vow to increase my pull-up abilities so we'll be able to do even longer via ferratas in the future. Right now I can do about four pull-ups, but my goal by next summer is to be up to ten!! ❤️ --E

    • @LiveHardxLoveHard
      @LiveHardxLoveHard  Před rokem

      Haha thanks Dave -- yes the good thing on this one is that the minute you get to the start you realize that, unless you're Adam Ondra, there are overhangs and slick faces where you won't even be trying to use only the rock. For me that was actually kind of nice because it let me just relax and focus on getting good shots of Elise instead of pushing myself to try hard rock climbing moves like I might have if it'd been just a little bit easier! --A

    Stumbled across your channel by accident and after the first glance I thought: Well, here's another attention-hungry social media couple which attempts hikes that are not made for them (we get too many of those here in Austria!). But boy was I wrong. You two actually are 2 very good mountaineers with the skillset to match the routes that you're picking. I also like your positive personalities. Sorry for misjudging you in the first place. ;-) Keep it up!

      Thanks very much, Peter. We totally understand how people could get that impression based on our titles and thumbnails, but of course the irony is that without provocative titles and thumbnails the videos would never even make it into the algorithm and get shown to them in the first place! So we appreciate that you gave us a chance and really watched the adventures. Hopefully many more to come as we continue to develop our skills! ❤️

    Elise at 2:10: "Wait...we're going up that? How is that even...what?...how do I do that?!"
    That's when you know it's serious.
    Great job, though! On inspiration from you two we're going to do our first Via Ferrata next week, on a beginner course in Tahoe!

      Thomas that is SO wonderful to hear! Once you guys get your confidence up and learn to trust the cables on a couple of easier ones, you'll be able to do pretty much any of these. Please let us know how it goes -- so excited for you!!! ❤️
