Sandstone Peak Ridge Traverse: Be Very Afraid

  • Well, that was intense. Sandstone Peak is one of the most popular hikes in Southern California. But that's far from the insane climb that this was. We wanted to create our own ridge traverse between Tri Peaks and Sandstone Peak, so we set out on the Mishe Mokwa trail to see what kind of scrambling we could get up to. After a short trail run to Tri Peaks, we found ourselves on one simply epic ridgeline, scrambling, bushwhacking and climbing our way across with unparalleled coastal views along the entire traverse. The name "Sandstone Peak" now has a whole new meaning in our book!
DISCLAIMER: This ridge traverse is NOT the standard easy hike to Sandstone Peak. It requires extensive third and sometimes fourth class (or higher, depending on the route) climbing skills and should not be attempted without the proper climbing experience. As always, hike and climb at your own risk.

The shorts were a questionable decision, but the approach shoes were definitely a good decision! ❤️

I find if you know you're in for bushwhacking, industrial cotton trousers work a treat, forget shorts, if your pack is sturdy enough, you can lean backwards into the bush, then climb over the flattened mass., This works particularly well for black berries, and bauera rubioides.
Outdoors is my happy place, full of fond memories, like bushwhacking up the back ridge behind cube rock, seeing the rock orchids, the freedom to go where you want, something you don't get in the city

Great day to be out there doing your guy's thing!
Just a quick correction:(sorry, not trying to be a 'fact check fascist')
The peak (Mt Allen) and the surrounding surrounding rocks are not Sandstone. They are the same rocks that are found at Malibu Creek State Park: volcanic breccia.
Malibu Creek seems to be the dividing line in the S.M mountains. Everything south and east of MCSP IS sandstone and everything north and west is Breccia.
Love that you two are out and about.
Also, just watched your Santa Paula waterhole video last weekend and was reminded of going down the waterslide and getting channeled into the far right slot and dislocating two of my right toes on the part of the rockwall that dives down into to slide/pool interface. Circa 1995.

Adam and Elise---you have done it again! You have managed to crystallize into one 20 minute video why I go out to sandstone to scrambling. And the infectious joyous celebrating after a well-deserved adventure, I love it. Well done! I've missed your most recent vids because I've been busy scouting some new bushwhacks + gorge scrambles for my group. When I hit the N Malibu area I will have to take that summit block climb at 5:31.
Adam, the camera flattens it out a bit---was that up to Class 4, maybe bordering on short Class 5 higher up the crack?

You have it exactly, Patrick. Almost everything challenging was class 3 or class 4, except for a couple of short class 5 moves on that summit block and in one or two other places. But honestly nothing too scary -- a perfect warm up for some of the dicier Sierra stuff we're hoping to do once the snow melts a bit more. And if you do the ridge traverse like we did, you'll have the whole place to yourself even on a day when the regular Sandstone hike might be crowded. I hike that area regularly. There is a route up Boney from the TO side which is a lot of fun. It's called the Mountaineer's route. The only other route up from TO side is Chamberlain Trail. The rock in this area is a combination of sandstone, volcanic and conglomerate. Only the volcanic can be trusted. Gotta be careful with the other stuff. Would have been surreal to run into you two....in my backyard.

That is so cool that you're up there a lot, and thanks much for the tip on Mountaineer's route! We will for sure try that, because there are some big rock faces at Tri Peaks that Adam wants to go back and climb with climbing shoes, and Mountaineer's route will be a fun way to get up there! And will for sure be careful on the sandstone -- that stuff is super crumbly. We also do training trail runs up there sometimes, so hopefully we will run into you! ❤️

Awesome adventure as always. I was wondering, do you carry anything like a Garmin Inreach in case you have an emergency? Getting into such remote spots is awesome, but it can quickly become a problem with a slip or fall. I had a friend slip on a icy slope last month. We were able to call for help almost immediately and had her airlifted off the mountain in about an hour which was amazing. It would not have been possible had I not had the Garmin with me that day. Be safe and keep the adventures coming!

    • @LiveHardxLoveHard

That's a good and important question, Stephen, and the answer is yes. We always have a Garmin mini with us on these adventures. We do try always to stay well within the limits of our capabilities to minimize the chance of accidents, but realize that it's always still possible for something unexpected like what happened to your friend (so glad she's ok, by the way!). We've never had to use the Garmin, but will always keep it with us just in case.

Thanks Liam! And yes, on every challenging hike like this we bring a Garmin mini, so that if any emergency occurred we would be able to call for help immediately from basically anywhere. But with that said, we want to reassure you that we train really hard on our climbing skills and never try anything that's above our skill level. Of course accidents can still always happen, but we really try to be vigilant about avoiding the pitfalls that lead to them.
