The Scariest Hike We've Ever Done: Cloudripper via Cutthroat Chute

- We were looking for a challenging hike in the Eastern Sierras, and boy did we find that and more with Cloudripper via Cutthroat Chute! The climb to Cloudripper summit is supposed to be a class 3 climb - IF you can find the correct chute. However, the beta is tricky and GPX is only so accurate, and we quickly found ourselves in a class 4/class 5 chute to the peak. Definitely not what we had planned for, definitely the scariest hike we've ever done, and DEFINITELY awesome!
We can safely say that, in our opinion, the Cloudripper to Vagabond Peak loop is one of the best hikes in the Sierras - the summit offers views from Big Pine Lakes to the Palisade Glacier, Chocolate Peak and the Chocolate Lakes, to Basin Mountain, White Mountain Peak, and beyond into the Sierra Nevada range. This is California hiking at its finest!

Hey guys, we've had a couple of comments asking about our gear and preparation for this hike, so we want to be totally clear. We ALWAYS bring a rope anytime we do scrambling and off trail adventures, just in case. We were both wearing approach shoes for this hike, which was the absolutely perfect shoe for climbing granite like this. We religiously check weather forecasts leading up to and even during a hike when possible. The brief cloudburst we experienced was not forecast anywhere, but fortunately it passed quickly. We also always have extra layers and an emergency bivy in case we need to hunker down for any reason. Sometimes people wrongly assume that because we travel light and cultivate a fun tone in our videos, that we don't take our precautions seriously. But we absolutely do, and hope that you will too. ✌️

Good words. Having led other hikers up an unpredictable mountain and/or into a bad weather situation, I can echo those sentiments from experience. Just a little bit of prep and packing beforehand can not only make your hike day/night more comfortable, it can sometimes save a life. Have fun but take calculated risks!

It has been a real joy watching your adventures. I was wondering if you guys ever did Mt Brewer, if not would you guys be interested in tackling it? It would be really fun to share and extend an experience to bag Mt Brewer to you guys. I have day hiked and overnight it several times. A fast pack one night would be perfect since the two additional peaks along the ridge should be a must climb (North Guard and South Guard). Hike can be done from west side or east side. West side being faster with less gain going in and out.

never doubted this for a second! In my day, the emergency gear we carried was a tad bulkier. It's so nice to see how lightweight things have become - my UL gear now (just for hiking) is unbelievable compared to yesteryear!

That was nuts! That boulder shute was the worst you can never tell if a car size boulder just needs a little push to tumble!

Aw thanks William. Yes, you are right, we were pushing the limits with this one. Honestly, though, that was just about our love of climbing and exploring and challenging ourselves on hard terrain. This is not a well known hike, so it wasn't at all about getting video views. We assume YT probably won't even show this to people outside of our subscribers. However, given that we were going to do this hike no matter what, we definitely wanted to take you guys along... because it was EPIC! But we really are careful and definitely try to minimize death risk while still getting where we want to go. ♥️

Haha thank you Steven! And yes, I was pretty scared, but mostly because I usually take my cues from Adam, and when HE admitted he was getting nervous then I knew this could get dicey. But, thankfully, we've been working really hard on our climbing skills and it really paid off. The scariest part was just the level of uncertainty once we realized we were not in the chute of our beta. Buuuut, so worth it for those summit views!

Hiking out through the back door with rope in hand I find myself in my backyard facing the scary high back wall of the house 🏡 With tent pegs, D shacks and rope in hand I stay climbing the big wall !! Reaching the top I anchor I'm safe safely to the roof and finish watching your video. GOD I LOVE THE OUTDOORS !!!

Yes yes yes Marcus!!! This is definitely a core part of our life philosophy. Of course we don't ever want to take foolish or unreasonable risks, but we also refuse to let fear of what MIGHT happen stop us from living an epic and exciting life. The endorphin rush from this adventure was totally insane, and we rode that feeling not just for the rest of the day but the whole next day as well!
You two are incredible! In my 40s I entertained doing Cloudripper, but NOT the face! I would have attempted it via the Class 1-2 route from 7th Lake on the other side! You guys have a lot of guts to attempt a route like the one you did!
That view of the Palisades.from the summit (L to R) Gayley, Sill, Polemonium, North Palisade, Thunderbolt, Winchell and Agassiz was awesome!
I surely believe your skills would be more than a match for The Black Kaweah now! Much of the difficulty of that climb is the approach. The Kaweah Peaks are higher than the Great Western Divide peaks, but the view perspective is not often experienced and those views are breathtaking!

Wow Michael we're both hoping that others are reading this comment as well, because you make such an important point of life philosophy here: when it comes to potential epic experiences, it is SO important to have a "go for it now" attitude rather than just assuming you'll be back one day, because so often other life events get in the way and that day never comes. We deeply appreciate that you share your wisdom with us, and we're thinking that at some point (maybe this winter when the hiking season slows down) we'd like to do a video dedicated to highlighting thoughtful comments like this that we and also others can learn from.

Wow! Loved the video! I hiked Cloudripper twice, 1980 and 1987. The "normal way". I remember the tiring climb back up Vagabond and the long boulder field back to Green Lake really beat me up. Unlikely to do this again so I enjoy seeing you two do it....certainly the hard way! All the best! PS loved the song
Hal that is awesome!! You're the first one who has commented so far that has actually done this bad boy. And yeah, that hike back up to Vagabond was way rougher than we had expected - not so much the technical difficulty as just the exhaustion and cardio strain that we were feeling at that point, and we got pretty beat up by the scree descent to Green Lake as well. So stoked that you loved the song. We're really feeling encouraged about our musical creativity, and will keep trying to create new songs to go with the videos!
I climbed up Cloudripper in 2004! via Green Lake. We decided to downclimb a different way and it was a mistake.
This kind of class 4-5 is definitely where most would want to rope up, bring some pro to place. Just free soloing it, definitely mad balls and props to you. Hopefully anyone else trying this ropes up.
Ya this one was right on the line between rope or not rope. The climbing was well within our capabilities, but it could have gotten harder at any time especially if we had to turn back. We did bring a light static rope and some gear just in case things got really gnarly and we had to descend back down the way we came up. ❤️

Great videos. Brings back memories from the 70s when my wife and I were of you guys’ age now and were going off trail all over SEKI. Got into some frightening situations at times but the memories are priceless. Keep on scrambling those boulders as long as you can.

I'll never do this now. With my messed up right shoulder and knees, I stick to nothing tougher than Class 2/2+. Thanks fo the well done video of your trip to the top of Cloudripper and back down (Ithink everyone agrees that down is much more difficult than up).

Thank you so much David! We really do have "staying within our abilities" top of mind lately. It's so tempting for us to try new and difficult things, but we've foregone several hikes already this summer because they just seemed a little bit beyond our current capabilities. However, that just gives us more impetus to keep working on our skills so we can go back and get them next year. Truly delighted that you're enjoying the videos!

Thanks Jeffrey! We had a similar experience: first saw Cloudripper from the South Lake side as well, and absolutely knew we had to climb it. That's so often the way with the scarier climbs we do -- we'll see them from a more established trail and wonder if they're possible, then start doing research and often find out that they are!

Yes Harry! The prospect of a 50 or 100 FT vertical fall definitely tends to focus the mind. This one was especially nice because even though the vertical drops were scary, the granite was very solid, so we were able to climb without too much fear of a hold breaking off. Overall, one of our all time favorite climbing adventures.

Wow, thank you so much! We DEFINITELY had insane amounts of adrenaline pumping getting up that chute, which totally led to a major adrenaline crash later trying to get up to Vagabond haha. But always worth it. So glad you could enjoy those summit feels with us!

Used to be, I led a Sierra Club trip to the top of Cloudripper, me also bagging Vagabond, and the day before, I led a few others to the top of Mt. Emerson. Posted at my website, I was a peak bagger. I enjoy seeing the sights and views by your videos, and in my time, I shot Kodachrome film with my Nikon SLR.
