      actually, terrible match up.
Comparing a weakened 5.7 x 28 to a +p+ is about as unbalanced as you can get...1700 fps is like comparing apples to -oranges- sunflower seeds.
They've slowed it way down. Why they did that? Is up for debate. There are "theories" and it has to do with the ACTUAL capability of the round. This Speer round expands out of a rifle (see video I have on channel landing page). Prior to 2022 the Gold Dot was around 1850 fps and expanded like it should out of a pistol. But even that is not "+P+"...to compare to that, one would have to get a round from Elite Ammunition and now you are talking "great match up".
Whoever it is that is forcing FN/Fiocchi to slow down the 5.7 x 28 - is the one wearing the man bun.
Put a 40 gr up around 1950 fps and then let's see what happens? (I have tests into gel what happens).

As someone who has daily carried a FN 5.7 for over a decade. I want to add that +p+ is the best the 9mm can do, max powder. The speer gold dot 5.7 is actually underloaded for its cartridge's capability. You can pick up custom 5.7 rounds doing 2.7k fps and they hit pretty hard. Almost like seeing a .45 hit in similar gel tests. So dont discount the 5.7 round. It is being fairly tame thanks to fn underloading their blue tips as the first large commercial product. I actually prefer the FN ss195LF rounds as a good all around 5.7 product. They pen, punch, and tumble making them ideal at 2k fps.
Many of these defense rounds are underloaded to penetrate at a certain distance in gel tests. Probably for legality reasons. But either way I love 9mm and 45. 10mm is great to.

The problem with the 5.7 is it takes the barrel lenght to get the speed required for it to be affective. You have several duty sized pistols available for it, but no real conceal carry sized. I also carry a Canik MC9 as my edc, but own a couple of 5.7's also. I really like the 5.7 in my Ruger LC carbine, in that lenght of barrel I think the 5.7 shines, plus it's a fun gun to shoot!

I think the whole point of 5.7 was to be, specifically for a sub machine guns, basically equivalent to 9mm ballistics but with soft armor penetration and more capacity. GREAT fit for a P90, but for a pistol or a rifle, they’re a compromise (as are all things I guess). The FN 57 pistol makes sense just because it pairs with your P90. Cool guns/round, but it gets a reputation it doesn’t deserve (and isn’t seeking) sometimes.

The problem is, nobody can get Gold Dot bullets to load anymore. I assume Speer is holding onto them. Their item 113 is another 124 +P+ but it uses a Nosler bullet. I actually tested them beside these not real long ago. They expand great and have near the same velocity/energy, but not quite as much penetration. Some people will probably like that better. I am seeing a More dramatic wound channel from the 5.7. I love the 5.7 because it is more controllable with follow-up shots, however, is less concealable than your average compact 9 mm. The 5.7 is the most efficient round on the market gram per gram which means more fire power in one magazine.

The carry benefit of the 57 would be the increased capacity. But for the size of the tool, I could carry a fullsize Canik 9mm with similar capacity. And solid 9mm defensive ammo would cost the same as 57 FMJ.
In the gel, though, the 57 rocked it pretty well for what it is. I would not like to be hit by it. I think it might fit in someones collection better if they had the 57 rifle, as well, to share the ammo across platforms.

Let’s start taking the high road 😁 - lawfully carrying any gun is better than not carrying at all. So if a 4.7’ 5.7x28 floats your boat and you can actually conceal it, all power to you.
But in this package the 5.7 loses all its upsides it was designed for. This GoldDot won’t even penetrate shitty 3a, it’s not fast enough to cause any special rifle round effects and even out of a 4.7’ barrel it has the energy of a .380. So Tools has it right. I’d go for a different 9x19 to cater for the 0.01% chance of having to deal with a 3a wearing ASshole

  • @emwaver

I've carried the Underwood 124 +p+ with a Unicore bullet for around 6 or 7 years. I get 1310 to 1320 pretty consistently from a G19 gen 3. I also have the Underwood 124 gr +p+ with what I think is Nosler JHP. It runs the same velocity but has the typical cup and core expansion. Not bad just not the Unicore / Gold Dot. Other than that its Federal 124 +p HST or Hornady Critical Duty 135gr +p+. I also do something lots don't but have never had an issue in all my years with the weapons used. Stagger my loading. Every third a Hornady 135gr +p Critical Duty as of recent. Same point of impact at 25 yards from my sidearm. This isn't everyday. Certain places I go, things I personally do. The Critical Duty doesn't expanded to wide measurement but it does penetrate very well and has a great trait of traveling straight after impact. Glass, metal, reasonably dense bone. So as a tool it has it's place in my toolbox.
Without extensive testing I don't recommend staggering.

Buffman range on yt is the king of 5.7 testing (no offense you're like my favorite ammo tester overall 😜) the speer gold dot 5.7 is anemic compared to even the factory fn green tip ammo. Solid copper jhp they perform a lot better than the gold dots, idk what speer did to that cartridge in 5.7 because they are good in any other caliber usually. I feel like expansion isn't the goal of 5.7, but it's designed to perform more like a rifle round with tumbling and fragmenting. Elite ammunition and the black dragon fang 5.7 loads are some of the best... But dang are they expensive and hard to get. Good test as always thanks for bringing this comparison!

Seriously there is nothing to choose between the permanent wound cavities or penetration. Energy is as energy does, and that extra energy from the 9mm doesn't appear to have a practical effect in the gel. An argument can be made for the 5.7 in terms of lower recoil and greater magazine capacity too, but given the expense of the ammo and proportionately greater training cost? I'll definitely be sticking with the 9mm personally.

I would carry both and trust them with my life, but I am getting more rounds off in a shorter time with 5.7.
2021-2023 there were multiple police shootings where police died in groups because they were shooting an armored individual who had soft plates and are not near their duty car mid shooting to grab the rifle. 5.7 was designed for law enforcement, it was barely used as the round was/is too pricy and the guns are limited. I can only think of 5 different guns that are chambered in 5.7. and they arent cheap.
20+1 normal capacity (30 rd extended) and roughly 30% less recoil and with mass shooters more commonly wearing soft body armor. a spicy 5.7 round out of 5inch pistol is going through LVL2A soft, no problem, 3A soft with certain rounds. a 9mm is stopping no doubt, the round is not fast enough to penetrate effectively through armor. It may break a rib, but its not puncturing an organ or spine with those soft plates.
Most 1v1 shootings/murders happen out of street life and grudges.
Most innocent victims are ones involved in mass shootings. Be ready, be prepared, and be comfortable with what you got.

I have a PS-90 I don’t own any 57 pistols. But I’d only run the fn green tip because of its velocity. In my opinion, the 57 round was designed and only causes damage when it consistently tumbles. To tumble you need that 2000fps or 2200 and up. Firing a hollow point in 57 thats going 1500 fps is no different than a .22 magnum.
