  • Testing some .380 Auto +P ammo from Precision One. Is it really the best self-defense ammo for a .380, or just another failed hollow point? Heavy clothing ballistic gel test using a Ruger LCP Max and Smith & Wesson Performance Center Shield EZ!

Extreme Defender is the best for me

Another reason you always want to see ammo do well in testing: You know somebody is carrying that ammo and depending on it for self defense, and if it comes down to it, you don't want some innocent person's ammo to fail them when their life is on the line.

I agree with your take on tiny 380 pistols. I have a Beretta Pico, it was the tiniest 380 pistol I could find. I got it because I wanted to take a very lucrative, short term job in a part of town I didn't like and with a company who would have fired and blackballed me if it was known I was carrying a gun. The Pico was my answer. Fortunately, I completed the job without anyone knowing I had it and without having to use it. I now use it as a BUG and keep FMJ in it.

PrecisionOne is fantastic ammo as Proven years ago by "Shooting the BULL". What you are missing is that the Plus P which came out later is not what you are trying to make it out to be. It is only differentiating from the standard to the Newer Pluse P. The Plus P is only about 50 FPS difference, Which does give more expansion. Even the PlusP is very MILD to shoot. PrecisionOne remains top shelf ammo for the small Pocket gun.

Another good one brother. About the only ammo I want to carry in a .380 is the Defiant Munitions TCX. That stuff is impressive. Thanks for working hard for us.

That may be what you said about the 9 over the 380,but as you get older like myself and many others sometimes the softer shooter is a better way to go. Especially when your hands and wrists have issues. Old Vietnam vet here..God bless 🇺🇸👍

I used to buy the XTP bullet for some 9mm loads. As you say, you gotta get velocity up pretty close to and beyond 1100fps. Sometimes I'd get reasonable performance at below 1100, not consistent. Tried different velocities, eventually decided to find a different bullet. I don't load any HP stuff for carry (attorney advice), too much "ammo" for lawyers to use against you. I buy factory stuff, using your videos as a benchmark.

I carry my LCP Max in my gym stuff because it’s small. It’s loaded with the Underwood Extreme Defenders (Lehigh) which work well. You came out with a video about a year ago testing it and that’s why I use it 👍.

For deep concealment, like in a suit, I'll carry a micro .380 as a get off me gun. I feel protected. Are there some .380 that expand? Sure, but like some of the other small calibers, expansion is seldom or nonexistent with HP. Nice to see tests that show the added cost is moot. Tools, again thank you for keeping great content going with these tests!

Yes, I agree, and I have a .380, but it is an effective self defense round, but the right ammo is needed like Underwood. Placement is key !

I'm glad you tested this bullet. Though the ammo had a poor result(particularly from the pocket pistol,) it is good to know how it really performs today. Sometimes ammo companies change the way they design a bullet and yet still sell it by the same name. This happened with the old 230gr Federal Hydra Shok and the 230gr Golden Saber(now bonded.) They were previously the best of the best in .45 ACP, but someone failed to heed the old saying "If it ain't broke don't fix it."

My dad bought himself the EZ 380. He's a Vietnam vet, but he was never into firearms at all in civilian life. He's got arthritis pretty bad now, and it makes sense for him to have something easy on his hands, but I know if he could handle the 9mm, he'd prefer it.

I have heard many people say they had trouble getting expansion in clear ballistics gel but when using the real fbi gel that they got reliable expansion if you get a chance could you test some of the 380 rounds that didn't expand in the fbi gel to see if you get different results perhaps Thanks!

You really have me hooked on your videos. I am a 380 fan and have been reloading my own because of what your proving. I realized this several years ago and have got to the point of some very good defensive rounds. Been using the same LCPII all this time and have come up with this. Gold Dot 90gr HP, Avg 1052, SD 19 & ES 44. No jelly tests but have a feeling they will perform OK.

I watched the test in question where the round performed good for a 380. Never tried any Precision One but grabbed some Underwood loaded with the XTP’s due the the test. Now I prefer ball and hope it tumbles. My 380 is a working outside tool mainly for 4 legged critters. Otherwise a small 9mm is my go to. Thanks for the video Tools!
