- Checking out some Federal Fusion ammo in 10mm and .357 Mag. Are shorter barrels enough to get these to perform? Are they good hunting or self-defense options? Heavy clothing ballistic gel test using a Glock 20 and Ruger GP100!

Glad you mentioned the fact the semi autos are not the actual barrel lengths. No body ever says that .. a 3 inch barrel is really around a 2 inch .. we get cheated 😂
158gr is heavyweight for .357. 125gr is the Magic Bullet man stopper for the Magnum. This was known back in the 70’s when wheelguns were duty weapons.

I do think that either round is sufficient to take a white tail with a good hit - not too far away.. like 50 yards. Now, put the .357 in a carbine and it's a whole new cartridge that's good out to 125 yards. Wow... the 10mm is really loaded down.. it should be 1300 fps and .357 Mag as well - the manufacturers used to load them more like 1450 or more with 158 gr. loads... There's always handloading...

Great tests Tools. Hunting bullets have a different desired effect than self defense. Penetration is what's everyone wants. Two blood leaks versus one.

I'd love to see a video with your favorite ammo for each caliber. 9mm, 10mm, 357 Magnum, etc. Or maybe a video compilation of the best ammo tested in the last year.
Since they're for hunting, maybe shoot both into bare gel to see if they would expand at all?
Fusion in .308 and 6.5 CR get fantastic expansion. I am surprised the 357 didn't expand with the velocity. However I can say for handgun hunting all I use anymore is underwood hardcast. 10mm and 357. The underwood packs the punch for penetration . You will pick up some more speed with a G40 but It doesn't look like it would be enough to do anything. Great info!

for 357mag ii get more consistent expansion out of Remington sjhp 125 and 158 gr. i think it shows hst on the boxes. but for dangerous game i would reload 180 gr gc fp like buffalo bore. reloading 45acp +p ,45super, 44mag i get wonderful expansion with xtp. papa enjoyed the video. 😊

Alaskan Ballistics shot the 10mm Fusion through several handgun barrel lengths into a cut of meat and wet newspaper. They all experienced mangled expansion (manglespansion?), which limited penetration tremendously.
