Is It OK to Hate Someone?

- What do we need to do as Catholic Christians to convey that the message of our religion is one of pure love? So often we misrepresent what it means to be Christian, causing many people to just see judgment when they see us upholding our principles. In this video, Fr. Mike emphasizes how important it is to live what we believe, and that means loving people so much that even when they harm us, we continue to love them.
Fr. Mike’s videos are now available as podcasts at www.ascensionpresents.com/podcasts. - Zábava
I've felt rage and hate in my heart over the last year towards those I feel are destroying our country. I really needed to hear this.
Me too!!!! I hate them every time I listen to their lies or how they twist reality, etc. That's how I found this video.
Wow. I'm glad I'm not the only one.
Same reason I’m here!
Same here. I have shared this with my bestie because she's the one I vent out on. Oh gosh, this is real tough for me. I'm going to need a lot of prayers.
Joni Michell wrote that great song you don’t know what you have until it’s all gone .yellow cab .
I have a really hard time with this one. Truly traumatic events inflicted on you by another person ... it takes a lot of time to let that hate go
Forgiveness does not benefit the person you're forgiving. It benefits YOU. You cannot move on fully from a destructive relationship or encounter unless you forgive the offense. Even secular psychiatrists will advise you of this.
yes, it takes a loooooong time to forgive, but then to love...... very difficult.
I’m nowhere near forgiving my enemy, but there was something I read that said “god makes certain things happen to put you on the path you are suppose to be on, Jesus had to be betrayed to fulfill his destiny and we too must recieve a Judas kiss before glory” , and man it makes so much sense , I’m still going through my own struggles but if I never went through that pain I experienced I never would’ve changed my ways, I don’t smoke weed anymore after smoking everyday nonstop for the past decade , I’m loving my wife more and spending more time with my kids now and even working out more, I can truly say that I became a better man and I got so much more to go, I can’t forgive right now but I know I have to try , I hope this helped someone who needed it please don’t do anything explosive , we have to try and trust that god has a plan for all our pain
I hear that. But, when you forgive them and let it go, God feels your heart with love... it is in both your enemy and your best interest to let it go. It's hard - the devil plays on us not doing it, but when you do - it is beautiful and amazing. And easier for the next one.
@@nrodofficial3729 When I have something happen and know it's too much, I come to the cross and ask Jesus "I can't deal with this.. I NEED You" and give it to Him. And suddenly its not that big a thing, and your heart feels His love to help. All my life screaming at God when overwhelmed, cursing, and to learn - just give it to Christ, on the cross. He'll walk with you carrying yours and its sooo much easier. God bless.
I had a series of doctors who made errors in my treatment, almost killed me, and left me with ongoing pain & the loss of my profession. I was a healthy mom and had a career, then they botched my treatment & lied about it. Not hating them feels like a mighty tall order most days. But I know I’m called to not hate them and to forgive. It’s a work in progress. God didn’t hurt me & humans are flawed. I try to use my experiences in pain to discern the hurt in others & reach out to them.
You are so kind ma'am, really respect you, i wish i can be like you too 🙏🏻
Father Mike, you have a nice way of putting things in neat little packages of wisdom. Thank you.
Holy Spirit speaking through him. A feel Fr Schmitz is a saint in the making .. as we all are.
"Hate the sin, love the sinner."
Monique Ocampo
yep ♡
love the sin, hate the sinner
I was just joking haha
AMEN
T.J. read the full context. Read the whole chaoter.
One of my favorite "church songs" growing up:
We are one in the Spirit, we are one in the Lord
We are one in the Spirit, we are one in the Lord
And we pray that our unity will one day be restored
And they'll know we are Christians by our love, by our love
Yeah they'll know we are Christians by our love
We will work with each other, we will work side by side
We will work with each other, we will work side by side
And we'll guard each man's dignity and save each man's pride
And they'll know we are Christians by our love, by our love
Yeah, they'll know we are Christians by our love.
"The world will never believe that we actually love people and love God unless we actually start to love people and to love God." -Fr. Mike. Love it!
Father Mike, WHY....WHY does God use you to speak truth into my heart JUST when I need it?
I was just grappling with someone who has come into my life and has been very much unlovable in their actions and words-to me and those around them. To say I feel some kind of anger towards them is an understatement. My husband has been trying to explain that it's not my job to hate, or be bitter or anything towards this person, but dang it, as you said, it's HARD when all I want to do is claw their eyes out!
But....BUT....God has been convicting me of my internal feelings and your video hit the nail right on the proverbial head. We can justify(i.e. excuse) our human, fleshy reaction towards others....but God calls us to be better than that, to love them as HE loved our sinful, rebellious selves even when we didn't deserve it.
Thank you so much for this message, posted just when I needed it.
If you'll excuse me, I'm going to pick my jaw up off the ground and go get some repenting done😉.
Blessings to you!
Mama Jenn / If you haven't seen 'War Room' yet, then think about putting it on your list. You'll be blessed, I was.
Praying for one's perceived enemies is the most difficult but powerful prayer 🙏
Please never stop doing these. They are such a blessing
Father Mike please make a video on how to stop hating someone 🙏
The bestest sound bites of WISDOM of Catholic Faith/Doctrine always comes from the voice of Fr.Mike Schmitz
The hardest people to love are those with big egos, self-center, huge self-pride, liars that see you like a dumb and have the strongest conviction that misleading you and destroying you is not only their right, but their duty, and no matter how hard I try to seek peace and reconciliation, they keep fighting to keep me submissive. It is really hard to love that kind of people.
Preach. Experiencing the same, these people are I’ll and work for the kingdom of darkness when I’m not busy trying not to hate them, I remember that people sow what they reap now or after and it makes me scared for their soul. Stay strong 🙏
Another amazing message! Thank you, Father Mike! So often the person to whom hatred is directed doesn't even know that someone hates them. Hatred erodes the soul of the one who hates. I struggle with this almost daily, and God give me His grace to not hate one day at a time.
Another one out of the park. And man o man do we need this message now.
This is such an important message to hear in our day and age. We're so politically and culturally divided that some of us fall into the trap of hating others. As Christians, as Catholics, we have to walk in truth, but we can do so with love, mercy, compassion, and charity. Thank you, Fr. Mike!
Thank you Father Mike, my heart is full of hate for someone who hurt me. I will try to stop. I needed to hear this.🕊
Hating takes up alot of our time and energy. Not worth it.
What might help is to think of their wickedness and understand that it separates them from God. That’s why it’s necessary to pray for them. That’s why they need your love.
@One Who Loves God, Thank you for your comment. You have given me something to think about. I no longer feel the hate I once did and I think I have forgiven them but love is a long way off. Maybe someday? Thank you so much🙋♀️💕🙏🦋
@@Missmarti77 you’re welcome. I know it’s easier said than done.
Love your enemies. Its hard to do.
“you can’t go to heaven hating somebody”
-Mother Angelica
It takes time to actually forgive somebody who hurt you physically or mentally (or both).
Usually, people never forgive somebody that hurt them.
I love you Fr. Mike. Thank you.
Father im in a battle alright! One of hatred in my heart & I don't want it! I was hurt so badly & it was so unjust & I still suffer the losses today. My life was ruined. I'll never be the same again. I'm trying to forgive I promise. Im so stuck. I choose forgiveness. I choose to forgive them. It burns & stings & hurts & aches. I'm sorry I'm such a baby lord. Help me stay in a place of forgiveness lord. Amen. Friends ... please pray for me. I'll pray for you.
And Jesus is right there with you in it...and as you continue to surrender that pain and ache and hurt and weakness to Him, he will continue to heal it and heal you and in some way that we may or may not know in this life, He will bring good from it. God can make beautiful things with our broken pieces.
@@JenniNJeff just checking my email. I can't believe i wrote that comment! Just getting real i guess. I know you're correct. You're very kind. Thank you so much. God bless you. Peace be with you.
Wow...that popped up on my notifications right when I needed to hear all of that, so thank you! And God sure is good with his timing!

Amen!!
This issue, of seeing past a person's sin/mistakenness to know a deeper identity worthy of love and forgiveness, is a prime example of how my personal sense of morality, identity, and things of importance are in alignment with Christianity. That's coming from the background of an agnostic, contemplating probable truth. It is reassuring to have come to the understanding and decision in my own thoughts, prior to accepting it in the words of others, for it's then that to hear it rings true. Thanks Fr. Mike for touching on a point of such significance. A good video, as usual.
Thank you for for your comment - that's amazing that you are contemplating truth. Our prayers are with you on your continued journey!
I hate no one, but at one time in my life I did . For yrs I couldn't move on with my life until I forgave this person . The weights dropped from my shoulders.........What I find lacking lately in my part of the world are many who do not have common sense, appreciation, respect or dignity and who will go out of their way to make one's life miserable ....
What a miserable existence they must lead . Love is just another 4 letter word to them, unfortunately .
Thank you Father Mike.
Fr Mike! You are amazing! (Just to let you know) And a special thanks to everyone at Ascension Presents!
God bless you Fr. MIKE👏🙏ITS REALLY True....in some situations, its difficult to forgive people who hurts us, but if we hate them, tht Hate inside our heart will make lots of irritations n problems! So its better to forgave those people n pray for them, and we can feel better & peace inside us, the Healing experience, telling frm my own experiences 🙏Thanks n Prayers to all of you🙏
Thanks, Fr Mike. You have a good way of teaching.
Thank you father mike for sharing your wisdom with us. You are an incredibly wise man who gives your listeners comfort. I believe that if I apply these teachings to my life, my life will be fulfilling.
Thank you. This needs to be said sooooo much more.
So guapo Father Mike! Thank you for your videos! God bless and protect you, Father Mike!
Thank you, great explanation!
thank you sooo much for your great message,God bless you Father Mike
Thank you, Father. Just to let you know there is a fan club in our group for you.
May God bless you for all the effort you do. "We have done such a bad job of portraying ourselves" and its time we change that perception as it is false and show what we truly believe in, which is to love
A prayer uncovered in a women’s prison camp: “Lord, remember not only men and women of good will, but those of ill will. But do not remember the suffering they have inflicted upon us. Remember the fruits we brought thanks to this suffering - our comradeship, our loyalty, our humility, the courage, the generosity, the greatness of heart which has grown out of this. And when they come to judgement, let all the fruits that we have borne be their forgiveness.” On a scrap of paper discovered in Ravensbruck extermination camp, 1945.
Thank You for sharing that Treasure, God Bless You !!! I"m going to write this down and share !!!
Thank you so much for your words. It is indeed a powerful message. We serve and praise an awesome GOD! Continue your videos, it is a great beacon of sympathy, truth and guidance! Many blessings!
wow I was in a need for this one.openly and shamlessly I was blamed by someone I would never thought..so harsh so hard situation. But HEY İF YOU ARE NOT PATİENT in those times than when?! I am not even catholic yet learned from Father Mike.
Well said. I especially loved the end.
Not to hate is the great challenge. I am so very outraged...by just about everything, in any direction I turn.
Thank you Father Mike. I truly thank you for sending this message. Now I am just sending these to my little sister. :) God bless you always!!
Wow, father Mike. Every time I'm watching your videos, I'm surprised. In a good sense. I absolutely love the way you talk. And the things you say are so simple, but so important. Your videos helped me a lot. Thank you so much! 😊
This is one of your bests, thank you !
Love, love, love his explanation of the difference of the two sayings. if you don't look at the sayings with the Christian meaning, you won't see it.
Do unto others, as you want done unto you sounds a lot better with the Christian act accompanying it.
thank you Father MIKE God bless you.
This is beautiful, man. Thank you.
I think most Catholics understand that just because someone may not follow their principles or Catholic doctrine means they should hate them. It's why many people say to hate the sin and not the sinner.
This is exactly what I needed to hear today. Thank you Father.
Oh I SO needy to be reminded of this today! Thank you God for bringing me this video todo! Fr. Mike, thank you for your YES to God and ability to teach, love you all so much, in your prayers always, Kristy in Missouri 😃🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🙏🙏🙏
HI I'm in my final year of high school and I recently had a fight with one/many of my friends and our once big group has now split:( I don't know how this fight had started, since we were all great friends since year 7 but I am really sad that what was once good is now toxic.) Thank you for this video as it makes God's presence stronger in my life as I am going through this tough time:)
God's #1 law is to love one another. Love your enemy. No ifs, whats, buts about it. Love the bully that assaults you verbally, and/or physically. This only applies to humans. You must hate demons, and satan. But when it comes to your fellow humans, you must love your earthly adversaries. Even if a mass shooter killed multiple members of your family, or a person driving drunk did the same, or if they burned your house down. God says you still must love them. It is very difficult to do, but you must. It is very hard for me, as i have a situation i am dealing with that i cannot go into, and i am bullied daily, by complete strangers. I still have to love them. Wow!
Just in time. I need to hear this. Thank you, Fr. Mike :')
Thank you Father Mike.
thank you Fr.Mike i needed this today God Bless
I realize from this that even though I have been Christian all of my life, I have only been living up to the Confucian form of the rule. Now, that may be good so far as it goes, but it is clearly not the Golden Rule as it ought to be lived. I have rarely, if ever, lived up to that. The Confucian form allows us to ignore our fellow man altogether-a sort of live and let live policy. The Christian form demands that we actually engage with our fellow man. With Confucianism, we have no obligation to act for the good of our neighbor. With Christianity we are COMMANDED to do so. Thanks for this insight.
Beautifully said
This was very helpful Fr. Mike, much thanks! Keep it up!
Excellent, Fr. Mike!
We can't hate but we must teach others.
Best way to do that is to walk the walk and talk the talk. Don't preach but show them.
God can always show them the truth as well. The world will still turn with you not talking always.
Thankyou father for always guiding me.
I had to watch this video a few times because I strongly dislike some family members, thank you Father Mike! 🙏🙏
Inspiring as always. Thank you for creating this content for us to share with others.
Wow. You are awesome. Im grateful I've come across your videos. I'm calling myself a born again catholic (thank you Jonathan Roumie 😊). I'm learning from scratch.

I watched this and this helps me a lot!
Beautiful video father🙏🏻
Father Mike your absolutely right ..
I really appreciate these videos, you're literally doing God's work.
thanks father mike I needed this today
If you keep forgiving someone, that person will take advantage of you. So yeah forgiving is a great thing to do but don't let it backfired. Evil is not something. Evil is someone and it could be anyone. I have been forgiving someone for almost 20 years and I can't do it any longer.
Forgiveness and reconciliation are not the same. In forgiveness, you bless the person who hurt you or done wrong against you without them apologizing or taking any corrective measure. Forgiveness does not require the victim to take the relationship to the level it was before the wrongdoing ( works only with reconciliation which is different from forgiveness and requires a cooperation from the wrongdoer as well).
@ricky roach Yes, you are right. Punishment must be that which is purely meant for correction and detached from passion.
If you cannot be detached from having passion, that's called vengeance and the root is anger or hatred. This is not what Christ teaches.
Parents are allowed to punish their children, as God punish His people too. But God is always detached from passionate anger, and His hatred is only for sin not the people.
@Norbert, like Stevin Wilson said, forgiving someone does not mean you should put yourself in a vulnerable situation over and over again. You should actually avoid letting the other person take advantage of you, for both your sake. That is why the Church actually allow couples to separate, not divorce, when one is in danger of abuse or violence.
Godbless us all people father Mike.,.. amen. 🙏
Amazing man!!!!!
Beautiful! Thank you :)
Thank you Father Mike! So beautifully put. More people need to see this (especially some of the people in the ewtn scripture and catholic traditions group on Facebook! ) I have to wonder about the 39 thumbs downs though. Who could thumbs down what you said?
A very good subject!
:) thanks again, Father Mike.
I depth with a different angle on this. It is people saying
God Thank You for Answering on my question. Blessed Be God Forever! Thank you father Mike for doing The Will of Our Father and being a good son to Him. You're right, Father Mike but it's hard to do. At least for me it is. But I agree with you.
thnx fr. mikey
i love you too!
When I learned what 'hate does, much as people in general I detest, Im making effort to deal with them keeping Christ in mind. You learn alot being Catholic and it's for the better.
I love this guy
I'm not really one to comment, but i just wanted to say: thank you Father Mike Schmitz! The information that you deliver in all of your videos is clear and to the point. I like how you explain things, you give us examples, evidence, it makes sense as to why the church teaches these things. I always feel convinced that yep, Jesus is right on this one again haha.. who would have known lol? Keep doing you. Or rather, keep doing Jesus through you lol. Thanks.
Thank you.
True, but we are also allowed to defend ourselves. We should not be abused without searching for safety.
You're points are valid and well stated. Thank you.
Another awesome video by an awesome guy (:
I Love all Ethiopians and Americans and Catholics GOD! And Mike!
hi great message...
For a long time I hated this man that completely ruined my life but now all I can do is pray for him because I know he has his problems and I just pray to God that he comes to his senses
Thank you..........
Its IMPOSSIBLE to love people who have hurt you and are continuing to.
You do not need to maintain connections with that person, at least forever. You have to love them, pray for them and for yourself for some help and guidance. God is with you.
@@SlythysGaming IT IS NOT mY JOB TO PRAY for AWFUL HORRIBLE PEOPLE. Hatred keeps them AWAY FROM YOU. We have to protect ourselves from MONSTERS.
@@luvisblind hey there. my comment was from a year ago, and im sorry that it has hurt you and possibly brought back some trauma. i admit its a really, really tough job to pray for the salvation of individuals who have caused significant damage, and who are most definitely twisted and Godless inside. While you, more than anybody in this situation, deserves peace and love, that person also needs to find Jesus. I apologise that my comment came off as in support of a perpetrator of harm. they do not deserve the grace of the Lord, though whom of us DO?
I hope for you to stay protected and far from those who are submitted to sin, and do not have an ounce of love within them. I hope that you find a place of safety and peace for the rest of your life. I understand that there are people who have clearly done multiple horrible things. I don't believe it's your job to pray for that person. I guess you could say my rather pushy message of "you HAVE to pray for this person" was inconsiderate of the emotional pain and psychological trauma of victims of harm.
Again, I'm sorry for causing hurt and pushing an ideology that seems to spit in the face of victims of harm and abuse. I will try to be more considerate with my thinking, and more strategic with my words.
Have a blessed day.
Father Mike I remember that during in junior high school days that in my previous school someone who really hates me.
Hate or love are an effect of an event that happen. If someone harms you naturally you will hate them. If someones shows you kindness you will love them.
Some people will have hatred to others God is aware if our struggles he gives them to us to learn buy all I'll feelings will fade away eventually and forgiveness will ensue .
I love your videos...I submitted the Spanish translation to the CC but I can't see them yet (I got the message from CZcams saying they've been submitted, accepted and published). I hope I can translate more of your videos in the near future
We can't hate someone for what they do. Love them (& believe me, that's very hard for me who' pretty much ignored people all my life, cuz when I'd get close, I'd get heartbroken). Judging others is another thing I'm praying to God to help me stop. We are ALL broken and not perfect. All God' children.
Have you seen The Keepers on Netflix? I haven't seen it yet but my friend/roommate said this is why she "doesn't believe in organized religion bc they're corrupted and garbage, like a cult." I was upset about that comment, I just chuckled and walked away. Also, since you like superheroes, what's your take on Marvel's Daredevil (Netflix)? Would love to hear your opinions on those two. Thanks. (PS- I didn't discover your CZcams page until a few days ago and you have answered so many questions about the faith I didn't think I'd ever find the answers to - or truly understand them. Thank you for clearing it up for me. I feel like a stronger catholic because of you! God bless!!!)
Hate the sin, love the sinner!
God bless
Nope. There are a couple of people I absolutely DESPISE with all my energy. They deserve it.
