In this Sensible Transfers series, In this series, we will analyse teams, identify problem areas, and suggest solutions in the form of incoming players.
Arsenal are, still, a team in transition. This season they have made significant progress, and at times show real cohesion. They’ve excelled when playing the teams below them, but struggled against teams above them in the league. So who could Arsenal sign that will take them to the next level?
Alex Stewart suggests solutions for centre forward, winger, and centre midfielder. Illustrated by Marco Bevilacqua.

Finding a new CF is most important, but I would put DM and RW as equally important since both are about finding new cover for our starters. Arteta seems to have no inclination of playing Pepe, and Saka can't afford to play every game. It'll tear on his body and make him prone to injury. And obviously we need a new DM to either start or cover for Xhaka/Partey/Lokonga

@@TheAquaSolution see this is where I feel that Laca and Pepe could play as the front two, with Odegaard's work rate complimenting Sambi's holding role in the central areas.
Allow White and Gab to spray the passes from the back and O8 working with ESR/Tierney/Martinelli making quick 1-2s through the midfield if that option is limited. Pepe playing through the middle as a no 10 gives him the opportunity to showcase how he can hold the ball at the final third. He also has a good record of headers, winning almost all of his headers playing on the wing. His understanding with Laca will be much better and he can always drift to the wing to support the right side, as what O8 usually does.

@CRISPNDRY Laca will stay at least untill the end of this season. Sad to say but Auba doesn't affect our performance anyway. Gabi can play as an interim striker, and there is Eddie. Whereas in midlefird, currently African players are all out , and Xhaka is recovering from Covid, we literally only have Patio and Lokonga in CM. We play Liverpool twice and Tottenham away this month. In terms of urgency CM is more important. I mean I am not denying the need for acquiring a new striker, but rather talking about which one comes first.

Either way both positions are needed, as well as backups for both right sided positions.

You can do without a good CF temporarily with a striker-less tactic like Man C, or relying other positions to score like Chelsea, but without a good CM, your midfield always get bullied. Also playmaker like Odegaard needs a good consistent physical midfielder as support. Xhaka is more temperamental than reliable, Partey is the only best DM. In fairness to Tifo, most teams’ defence starts with the attack - so it was reasonable to suggest that a CF is the most important position. A dual-fold purchase, someone who is good at attacking whilst also able to press and rotate with the wingers. It also provides cover for the central area of the pitch, which Tifo determined was an area of concern for Arsenal.

The problem with Alex isak is he has never scored or had combined goal contributions more than 20. Although he is good with link up play, dribbling and shots on goal, that doesn’t clarify he’s a good striker. The sole purpose of a striker is to receive and score. David was originally a cam/cf so has to link up play because that’s the job of a cam/cf. isak might be good in a cam/cf role but I don’t think that’s a risk they should take. @adzarsenal39 Před 2 lety +2

@@duaneswaby622 it's definitely not a foolish thing to judge him on, he's the Technical Director you melt. And it's rubbish to say that other clubs have struggled to sell players. Chelsea have sold the likes of Abraham, Giroud and Guehi and made good money. Meanwhile Edu's tactic has been either loan deadwood out with no option to buy, meaning they'll just end up back in a year (Guendouzi, Bellerin, Torreira, etc) or actually pay players to terminate their contract (Mustafi, Sokratis, Ozil, Willian). Meanwhile his failure to sell the likes of Laca and Nketiah in the summer means we're gonna lose 2 strikers for free that we could've easily made £40m from.
Also, his recruitment has gone well sure, but don't think he's handled negotiations particularly well. Remember how long he was haggling with Atletico for Partey, then on deadline day we just paid his release clause because he couldn't get them to lower the price. So yes I will judge him on all those things, his job is to handle the recruitment AND the sales of players. So for you to deliberately ignore half of his role is ridiculous pal

I think that the cm Tifo suggested was decent. Maxence is more of a destroyer but is a decent passer. For striker and winger I would pick Jonathan david and Antony resp. Because david is a versatile player who has shown in Belgium to be a good linkup player and a scorer in Lille. He could improve on his aerial duels, spg and key passes but overall he is a good player👍🏽 Antony is perfect for that right side. Good spg, dribbling per 90 and key passes all close or above 2 a game. He’s agile and can wiggle his way through players and he is decent finisher. He’s also a good presser and is comfortable with the ball (obviously he’s footballer) and occasionally knows when to dribble and when to pass. He’s also versatile and play on the left and as a striker. Him and david combined would cost close to £100 million but if arsenal want qualification to ucl I think these are better.

For center forward, I'm really not sure about Vlahovic although he seems like the biggest candidate. He can be an excellent striker, but he isn't exactly a good fit for the Premier League. Serie A's low tempo helps pivot forwards like Lukaku and Vlahovic to shine while the Premier League requires more pace and/or technical skills. Isak looks like a better fit, even though his ceiling isn't as high as Vlahovic's.

I can get behind the Isak and Kulusevski picks, but I think they are off base with the midfield picks and comments. Sangare feels like the obvious player to try to snap up, Gravenberch is class too, but I don't know if they are willing to pay the crazy money required to get Ajax to consider moving him along giving it's not the only move for a regularly starting class player they really need to make. Personally I would love to woo Pellegrini or Milinkovic-Savic over from Serie A but those are both highly unlikely and exorbitantly priced dream signing type picks. That's part of the problem, there aren't many midfielders ~25 or younger that fit the bill for us that are looking to move and/or that clubs are willing to sell for anything less than insane money. The Midfield is definitely coming together steadily but they absolutely need more talent and depth there to compete at the level the fans expect!
