In my childhood I always thought that Arsenal was named after Arsene Wenger
The Emirates is named after Unai Emery
The Armoury is named after Mikel Arteta
You are not alone my brother! There are thousands, who feel the same as us😂😂😂
That would make sense seeing as how Arsene Wenger was their first manager.
Same here
My sister tricked me into supporting Arsenal when I was 6. She thought it would be funny when I get bullied at school when most are Man Utd or Liverpool fans. I'm glad she did that, life is something when you go through so many emotions as an Arsenal fan.
Arsenal is best .
Lewis Hamilton quote
@@joelsiju2005 liverpool is the best

It’ll teach you to temper expectations… show you the ups and downs of life. Gotta work for what you get
Everybody knows “Arsenal” was a name given to the team, after Arsene Wenger came into power
that's the reason they made this vid
Around a decade ago i remember someone made a joke about two of the best English League managers, Arsene Wenger and Manchene Wenger... Its amazing how time flies.
as a kid born in the 90s i genuinely thought that was the reason.

Arsenal are called Arsenal in honour if Arsene Wenger.
Their next manager should be Ole GUNNER Solskjaer.
Brentford otw to sign Cardi B
@@ojasdighe991 wait I don't get it 🤔😂
No thanks
@@Ze_Moose their nickname is the bees
@@pando2333 The fog is clearing up 👍
That's cool. However, I never really saw it as a mystery: They're called Arsenal, which is a store or collection of weapons, and they have a gun on their badge. "Gunners" seems an appropriate nickname. But learning the history is interesting :)
Same here. Love their content but the title could be different this time
Lies again? NTB NAB
I'm from Germany and figured this out when I was in primary school since Arsenal means the same thing in German and Gun was one of the few English words that I knew at that time and since we have Teams like Bayer Leverkusen and Wolfsburg, I was sure it must have had something to do with workers at an arsenal. I'm very proud of you, childhood me :)
What do Bayer Leverkusen and Wolfsburg mean?
@@mjmulenga3 they're both works teams, Wolfsburg is the city which is home to VW and i think Leverkusen is actually still owned by the pharmaceutical company Bayer despite the 50+1 rule
@@mjmulenga3 the "bayer" in bayer leverkusen is a pharmaceutical company. "wolfsburg" is just a small city where the club is from, but the club is also a factory workers club for the people that worked at the Volkswagen factory in the city

Although Ian has done a great job so far, I just missed Joe's narrations. They're something else 😎👍
I was badly missing him,so much so that I couldn't watch the previous 2 or3 videos till the end. His voice is very addictive.
I live in Woolwich, I’m like 5 minutes away from the plaque which commemorates the founding of Arsenal. This is so cool!
Bruh I'm from Tottenham. Take them back

We’ve actually never won promotion either. We asked politely and got elected to the 1st division.
Now that Ive grown so accustomed to the organized chaos and dry humor of Tifo IRL and the podcast, it’s funny seeing these polished videos. Great content as always of course
I’m glad you’ve covered all names in great detail! A lot of people didn’t know our first ever name. Good video 🤝
Please make this a series! Covering all teams!
Why is Manchester City called Manchester City hmmmm
@@nicolasmarkham9656 I wonder. Hmmm.
@@nicolasmarkham9656 Because G.K. Chesterton was a man that lived in a city and they were fans of his work, so Manchesterton City was born. Some years later was reduced to Manchester City as we know today
My grandfather was born in north London but moved over to the US when he was in his twenties but he would always come over and watch Arsenal games with me when I was younger he definitely made me an Arsenal fan. Especially because it was the 2003-2004 season so I got to experience the invincibles and I’ve never looked back.
You got to experience a team more focused on not losing, than winning. Congrats 👍
You never looked back? All I do is look back to pre 2004 🤣
Great detail… there is a section in the stadium called Dial Square but never knew that was the original, original name
Royal Arsenal sounds dope!
With Prince Wenger as the resident Jimmy
Love to see you do this sort of history video for some more clubs!
Sheffield Wednesday will take about 20 seconds... LOL
I knew the Arsenal and Wednesday histories, but would be interested in learning about, say, Plymouth, Crewe, Hamilton, Tottenham, Villa, ……. probably one or two other uniquely suffixed sides who aren’t springing to mind. Accrington!
Welcome back Joe. We missed you.
You should do for all the prem teams and Famous relegated teams Portsmouth, Charlton and of course The Massive Hammers
You can named Blackburn or Nottingham but you chose Charlton
Just glad to have the orginal voiceover back..🤙
Yes! Joe is back! Talk about anything, we've missed you

Thank you, Tifo, for answering the most pertinent questions in football.
Could you do barnsley's run to the fa cup semi finals in 2008
My niece has been a friend of Steve Sidwell's wife since school and was visiting from Spain when Barnsley hosted Chelsea in the 6th round. Her boyfriend was allowed to play with Sidwell and other players that weren't going to Barnsley. On the morning of the game, she asked me if I'd pull the photos off of her camera and the sight of her boyfriend with Sidwell, Lampard & Drogba nearly sent me running straight to the betting shop! He told me Drogba was tough as a brick wall.
Barnsley won 1-0. :)
Also worth a mention that the video is great!
Legend is back!

there we go. the normal narrator is back and i can watch videos again
Dial square my favorite team!🥰

Welcome back Joe, hope you enjoyed your vacation ❤
Welcome back posh voice over man!
As a kid I thought that the arsenal logo was a prop plane with weird wings, the wheel of the cannon being a propeller. I only put it together when I was a lot older 😂
HE IS BAAACK❤️😭
It's not Arsenal 1986 it's Arsene 1996, just for @Mr DT lol
His back!!!
Ah boys you missed the boat on this one one of my favourite history channels history with Hilbert just made a video breaking down the nicknames of every pl team last week haha
🤣👍
Reminds me of their Barcelona Femení video. It was a month after creator made a vid about the women's football section. 😳
Arsenal is my team and will always be, maybe it’s the “guns” they consistently use to breakdown their fans with these disturbing inconsistencies.
JOE IS BACK! YAY
Highbury we miss you.

Finally he is back.

Arsenal as a football club are still London’s best football clubs. I’ve been to Emirates Stadium twice and it’s a incredible stadium.

Alfreton Town: Just you wait..
"This could be the beginning of a beautiful series", never said, Humphrey Bogart
Anyone else have a sense of pride watching this?
Can you make a video on Aston Villa, their transfer activity over the past 4 seasons is quite unbelievable. Given they spent 3 years in the championship before getting promoted I was expecting modest spending but they seem to have a bottomless pit of money. How are they not breaching fair play rules? I honestly have no idea
They just got 100m from grealish?
@@damianstarr1696 that’s the only notable incoming they’ve had but they spent that at the beginning of last season. They signed; Buendia (£40m), Ings (£25m) and Bailey (£30m). That’s before signing Digne (£25m) & Coutunho (£200k+ p/w I’m wages) in January. As far as I can tell they’ve spent three years in the Championship and haven’t exactly balanced the books before coming back to the prem and spending avg. £80m per season. If the Carlos deal goes through they will have spent £44m already and added somewhere in the region of £450k p/w to the wage bill
@@chelseatillidie69 It does seem a bit excessive. Villa are tiny
The Woolwich Wanderers is more fitting
I can’t believe you made a video on this ffs. I swear this channel just puts out content for the sake of it now. Used to be quality, now it’s just quantity
I do miss Highbury
and now, over 100 years later Dial Square FC has been founded, rebelling against arsenal's American ownership.
interesting how these things go
Do people take issue with the owners being American or because they aren't good anymore under American ownership? If they were winning the Prem and Champions League every year with the same American owners would people still be bothered? Genuinely curious.
@@cappyjones It’s crybaby fans who like to pretend the Americans aren’t putting any money in - yet have spent £450m since 2018.
@@cappyjones It's more to do with how the American owner has run the club, after all Stan Kroenke isn't particularly loved by fans of his American teams, either.
Really i had no idea really?
@@cappyjones very true, i mis phrased it - it's the incompetence of ownership which happens to be american
Band Agent: “You’re gonna be huge but you have to change the name from “Dial Square” to something more catchy.”
I want your voice Joe
The sweet baritone voice returns
If a true supporter cannot answer this simple question then he is not a true Gunner.
Man used to kick ball in Plumstead! 😂

An arsenal is a place where guns are stored, the teams name is arsenal, thus they are called the gunners
Next video - Why does Nottingham Forest have the nickname the Trees ?
I love My Arsenal
I thought Arsene Wenger owns the club and I also called him Arsenal Wenger when I was young.
I called him Jimmy
I was seriously just thinking about this the other day. Does Joe Devine have a computer chip in my brain?
Actually, they used to be called Nal, but after their recent performances, they were renamed Arsenal.
The Arsenal. 🔥🔥🔥
1:16 suggest that’s a great place to finish the video
Must be a typo, they're actually called "Runners".
Because it rhymes with runner, which they all are.
Make a video on milan
I live in Woolwich it's only right I support Arsenal
Football Heritage
COYG 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Arsenal is one of a few words from Venetian to come into English. one of only a couple interesting things i learned at University
I don't want to have a dig at Arsenal, but I remember a point in 2009 when my brother decided he supported Arsenal for about 3 days, before he then decided he didn't like football. I've always joked about it with him since saying he must have had some foresight as to how the next decade would pan out for them 🤦♂😂
Why CSKA MOSCOW is CSKA ?
Well it doesn't matter what they call themselves; right now, they are the "before" of a Numan ED advert
Pretty sure History With Hilbert already covered this a few days ago
OMG no one cares about hiblert.
@@justicedemocrat9357 by ''no one'' you mean 388k people
That is a history lesson. Who actually coined the nickname?
Being an Arsenal fan is both the most captivating and most irritating experience one could have as a sports fan.
gunners are runners
ins't it gonners ? the official twitter handle just said gonners,
Woolwich wanderers.
Next one on, why Chelsea are known as the plastics
wait so why are they called the gunners?
🙄
Because it was started by workers of an arms factory
3:20
An Arsenal is where guns are stored . Club started by munitions workers.
Woolwich Arsenal, the munitions depot in North London...
Come on you gunners
Good to see Joe Devine back. The other fellow had a boring voice

‘The move saw them lead any alphabetised list of football league clubs’.
That’s the only time arsenal is leading in anything 😭
...and it'll end when Aldershot or Accrington Stanley reach the prem.
Fam they literally in first of every PL season at matchday 0
My guess: in French, Arsenal means "stockpile of guns"; hence, the gunners.
Over 100 years after the change fans still use The Arsenal. Well, I do anyway.
Can we get a "What happened to Nottingham Forest" ?
Why wouldn't they be called Gunners? England has an Arsenal of Gunners gunning and running running and gunning.
Before watching: I dunno... is it something to do with the... cannon on its crest?
OR THE NAME "ARSENAL"
