Pedri is one of the most exciting young players in world football. He plays for a giant of a club in Barcelona, and already there’s little he can’t do on the pitch.
So surely, one day, he’ll be in the reckoning for the Ballon d’Or award. But is it that easy?
Seb Stafford-Bloor looks at the previous winners to find out. Illustrated by Philippe Fenner.

I’ll argue that we understate how exceptional the duopoly of Messi Ronaldo has been, which means in my opinion the ballon d’or will be waaaay more open to other players, even midfielders like pedri. Also If you guys could come up with a video “why stats aren’t everything” that’d be great 👍

I think it is important to note that whenever discussions about the Ballon D’Or take place that prior to the Ronaldo-Messi era, the FIFA World Player of the Year was in fact the “higher” award and that was the one that really players wanted to win. Eg in 2004 Shevchenko won the Ballon D’Or but Ronaldinho won the FIFA WPY and clearly everyone knew Ronaldinho was the “best player” at the time and then did go on and win both awards the following year in 2005.

I don't know why you have so many upvotes but that is completly wrong, the Ballon d'Or has always been the most prestigious individual award in football. You can certainly argue that it has been wrongly awarded at times, I'm no arguing that, but to say that FIFA World Player of the Year is the most prestigious is absolutely wrong. The Ballon d'Or has been awarded since 1956, the FIFA World Player of the Year started in 1991, and the former has always been the most prestigious one.

@@eduardc1058 the FIFA WPY as it was awarded by FIFA became the most prestigious once it started. The fact that the Ballon D’Or is older does not mean that when FIFA started their awards it did not become the top awards in the game. The best was when the two awards merged and were called the FIFA Ballon D’Or. Then after they split I agree that this so called FIFA Best awards are pointless and the Ballon D’Or is back to being the best. However for the period of the FIFA WPY it did overtake the Ballon D’Or.

      Imran M is correct.
For a long time only European players - playing in Europe - were eligible to win the Ballon d'Or until 1995 that's why it was commonly known as the "European best player" there wasn't any "World's best player" till FIFA introduced it in 1991. It was only after 95 that both awards were in competition with each other when France Football made non Europeans eligible.
FIFA World Best Player was considered "authentic" and thus more popular cause The FIFA award was decided by your Football peers around the world via captains and coaches of international teams voting who was the best player, unlike what would be seen as the privilege of touch journalists like France Football.
Ballon d'Or only became more popular when it merged with FIFA WPY award in 2010.
Look at the winners of the awards between 91 and 09 when they weren't won by the same player and you can see which was way more popular.
The current "UEFA Men's Best Player" is basically what the Ballon D'or was seen as until it merged with FIFA

Modric is an important piece of croatia's team, sure, but that team really didn't deserve to be in the final. If anything, rakitic was more important in the knockout stages and croatia were given an easy bracket thanks to things like spain choking against russia. On the Modric part, not sure I agree that Messi suffered a "disruptive and disappointing year at Barcelona." Messi won a domestic double (La Liga and Copa del Rey), whilst not losing a single game (the only game Barcelona lost in the league that season was a 5-4 loss to Levante after mathematically winning the league with Messi not even in the match-day squad). He finished the year top scorer, top assist provider, most goals from outside the box, most free-kicks scored, most touches in the opposition box, most passes completed in the opposition third, most dribbles completed. It was, quite frankly, an outstanding year for Messi. Yet, somehow, he finished 5th. If any other player put up the stats that Messi put that year, I think they'd comfortably win the award. People were just getting sick of Messi winning every single year and so his own standards let him down. Obviously, the shock of him coming 5th in 2018 meant he won it in 2019. The only reason Messi didn't win the Ballon d'Or in 2018, or even come in the top 3, was because Barcelona lost to Roma in the Champions League quarter-final (which was hardly Messi's fault) and Argentina had a 'disappointing' World Cup (i.e. getting knocked out narrowly in a 4-3 game against eventual winners France - goodness knows how Argentina losing to France is a bad World Cup run, whilst Croatia scraping their way to the final against Russia and Denmark on penalties, then beating an overperforming (at the time) England team only to also lose to France is somehow impressive and Ballon d'Or worthy). It actually astonishes me how people just write Messi off as 'having a bad year' in 2018 when he was astonishing. Literally 2 games, the 2 I mentioned, defined everyone's perception of him that season.

I could care less who wins the Balon D’or. The fact it’s weighted so heavily towards attackers is a massive problem. VVD should’ve won one as should Sneijder, Ribery, Xavi, Iniesta and Neuer. The award should be broken up into the best central midfielder, center forward, winger, fullback, goalkeeper and centerback. Liverpool would never have won the UCL without VVD. Bayern wouldn’t have had a treble without Ribery, inter wouldn’t have won the UCL without Sneijder, a double for Bayern without Neur’s heroics or Messi bagging most goals in a season without Xavi or Iniesta. Those are the most recent examples I can think of.

As we know, the Ballon d'Or has basically become an award given to the stand-out player on the team that wins the Champion's League and/or World Cup unless there's someone as good as Messi of course. The awards should be voted on solely by managers of all clubs (not even by players), otherwise its quite literally a farce. Maybe what the journalists can do is just consolidate a list of 100 top players in Europe, so managers don't have to spend hours and hours of unbilled time searching for them.

What up and coming player is likely to ensnare the Balon d’or for the generation? (I thought it was gonna be Pedri)

2003 was a bloody robbery. Henry should have won it by a mile😩

I’d said Haaland has a pretty good chance at winning the ballon d’or because of his national team. Not him actually winning a international cup, but if he could ever get his team to a semi final and is the one standing out, basically just scoring or assisting that would give him pretty good luck to win it. Since if your Mbappe or pedri, with Spain or France you should basically always get to the semi final of a major international trophy to have a good chance at winning.

Tchouameni, Camavinga, Valverde just in the midfield but also Vinicius and Rodrygo are young and have showed so far more than Pedri. Who controls this youtube channel? Laporta?

that's why ballon dor should be split in best gk, def, mid and forward.

Please give an editorial cartoonist a chance. Not only does Pedri look like he’s 600 years old, he also doesn’t look like Pedri.

There are so many players ahead of pedri who are likely to win it ahead of Pedri besides Mbappe & Haaland. Vinicius, Foden etc. Pedri is great but he most a times when people are arguing about how good he is, it is mostly in relation to how many games he played in his breakout season.

    • @osk8509
      @osk8509 Před 2 lety

idk bro yes he had them games in brakeout season but after that season? gotta say he turn his game jets on and started playing crazy good for a 19 year old plus from all the names u said pedris the youngest one so times on his side like when mbappe gonna be 30 and probably out of his prime pedri will be around 26 years old in the peak of his prime if no injuries or other things happen

Thats not true. Most people talk about how great he is because of what he does on the pitch. Watch him and you will see his brillaince. Compare the team of Foden with that of pedri

They just changed the way they choose the ballon d'Or. I doubt that you can predict if a world class player will or will not have this trophie in the next 12 -15 years he has to shine on the pitch without even 1 edition of the new ballon d'Or even Messi and Ronaldo fans were kind of bored to see them win at the end and i hope that the new way of choosing Ballon d'Or will not lead to giving like 5 Ballon d'Or to Mbappé, 5 to Haalland in the 10 next years , Pedri have his chance he will have many euro, many world cups and many UCL runs to get it
