    In this Sensible Transfers series, In this series, we will analyse teams, identify problem areas, and suggest solutions in the form of incoming players.
    Newcastle United are wealthy beyond their wildest dreams, and now dream of having stars like Coutinho or Dembele in their side. But would they be the most sensible signings? Firstly they need to lift themselves from the relegation zone. So who could they convince to join the relegation battle, and then push on next season?
    Alex Stewart suggests solutions for a centre-back, defensive midfielder, and attacking midfielder. Illustrated by Henry Cooke.

Sure, they're not scoring a lot right now, but if the team has a couple of better defenders, both Wilson and Saint-Maximin wouldn't have to run back and support the defensive duties as much, and could go to create and score more often.

    Think the player choices are very good, if Botman goes through it will do us a wonder of good, and we're crying out for a defensive midfielder. i wasnt too keen on the final team though, Darlow is not our starting keeper, Dubravka is, and is a very good player for us (even if our shocking defence ruins him statistically). Secondly, in a more midfield role, Joelinton has been immense under Howe, specifically dominating the game against united. I think he is definitely worth talking about when discussing our team set up, he's hugely popular at the club, and if he continues to perform like this, also a guaranteed starter.

    Surprised they didn’t suggest Nat Phillips at Liverpool. Coming through at Liverpool has made him competent on the ball and he’s a big, strapping old school centre back. Plus he’s about 5th choice for Liverpool who have Sepp Van Den Berg out on loan too (and playing well at Preston North End) so they have a ready made replacement and would likely be open to offers. Plus he’s got Premier League experience (albeit one season) so he’d likely need less time to adjust to the premier league than most signings which is crucial when you’re signing a player to repair a dismal defence fighting relegation.
    Only downsides are his lack of game time this season (is he match fit?) and his lack of experience at the bottom end of the table.

    I do think that they might have more success getting players whose contracts will expire this summer for a small fee. If rumors are believed, they've had a bit of a challenge in trying to get Botman and perhaps tossing a bit of a extra money at a club for a player they're gonna lose anyway. Teams know they're rich, but also the "PL tax" will probably come into effect as well. Hopefully they can stay up and put together a good squad. Not sure Howe is the guy to go forward with it though....

    Bringing in Trippier will do a lot in terms of quality (to me he is england's 3 best right back behind arnold and james) but to have a player who started a european final, will do wonders to boost the reputation and pick up the levels of quality in training and matches. They sign a midfielder and a winger and i think you have enough to stay in the league.

    • @HarryG98
      @HarryG98 Před 2 lety

      They need far more than a “midfielder” and a winger. They need a CB, DM, AM winger like you said and could even do with another striker or GK. They are very likely to go down imo

    I think the defense really needs to be transformed. I do agree with Botman but I think Lazio's Luiz Felipe who is out of contract next summer is also a player Newcastle should look at. He sometimes looks a bit clumsy but I think that he is a really strong and good defender.

    I would love to see this Newcastle side. Frankly, this would be an epic relegation escape if they can pull it off (I am still dubious unless they make several more moves in the January window). 11 points is tough especially since Burnley still has 2 games in hand still and will likely push Watford into relegation territory soon.
    Right now it looks like the bottom of the table will be where all the drama is this season.

    All that work, but you still leave Ritchie out of position at left-back? Good grief. Decent choices in the positions you've chosen, but I'd prioritise a left back (even allowing for our recent acquisition of Trippier) over an attacking central midfielder.
    Edit: You also drop Joelinton despite him having been easily our best player in the Howe era.

    Newcastle supporter here- now, normally I love your illustrations on these...But, why is Eddie Howe 60 and why has ASM been boozing like John Bonham for a year before his drawing?
    Looks like we'll be getting the Bot-Man. Which is exciting. Personally, on FM, I went for Grillitsch who was extremely successful. I can't see us ever getting Tchouameni or Tolisso!! Though if it happens I'll be delighted.
    *Just seen your final team. Darlow?! Ahead of Dubravka?! Dubravka can make some errors but he is a far superior keeper. I'm also glad that we've already sorted Trippier because to not put either full back on your list is madness- it's possibly our weakest areas pre-January.
