  • thought you'd seen it all when it comes to influencers and celebrities editing their bodies for social media? think again! enter 'lens distortion', the sneaky new photographic technique that influencers are using to manipulate their bodily proportions for social media - and they cant even be caught out for it. because technically theyre not editing their body, the camera is doing it for them!
    this is just a mini video, but its something to be aware of when you're scrolling social media. be mindful of the content you're consuming and be aware of digital manipulation so that you dont fall into the trap of comparing your own beautiful body in its reality, to the fakery online.

In fact I always check when someone takes a picture of me that I don't look like an ugly skeleton with huge hands and feet. Maybe their not trying to look like that. Seeing some pictures of Ariana I totally look like that sometimes without actively trying 😢😢 I hope she doesn't feel ugly when she looks at those pictures....

      Why would Stephanie be mad at them for being thin? Stephanie herself is thin and a lot of the time as thin as the women she is talking about. She is simply trying to get the message out that worshipping these skinny women bc they are skinny and pretty is unhealthy. Learning to love and accept yourself is healthy. No one looks like this in reality. The photo style makes them look like real-life Bratz dolls. It isn't artistic, it's a lame attempt at looking super skinny. I am sure it looks normal or cool to young ppl, but it just looks ridiculous and sad.

    As a photographer I have to say lens distortion can be a very fun and creative thing to play around with. If a celebrity uses it all the time and in a way that is not super obvious to their young fans though then you are absolutely right. But also if you like your face in the mirror but not anymore when you try to take a good selfie then that is lens distortion working against you. A selfie stick or a tripod and a bluetooth remote shutter can help in those situations to get more distance between you and the lens to create a more realistic image of your face. And a lot of CZcamsrs too probably just don't know enough about the cameras they are using. I've seen a lot of too big heads here too.

    • @Cayliente
      @Cayliente Před 7 měsíci +18

      @@perturb-arte1577 focal length and distance are the two big factors here! 35mm is considered to be what our eyes see and lower numbers like that are “wide” and result in distortion like she’s showing here. A telephoto lens is going to be more like 50mm+ and is more “zoomed in.” This creates a more compressed image that is considered more flattering. Distance is also going to be important because the distortion is more spread out in the frame and less concentrated on your face the farther away the lens. So yes, keep lens farther away and zoom in more!

    • @MegaGasek
      @MegaGasek Před 7 měsíci +12

      @@perturb-arte1577 In my experience doing headshots, 80mm/88m, a bit more a bit less, depends on the person, is ideal for taking photos of one's face. 50mm also works wonders. It is very hard to make a person look good with a wide angle, 12mm for example. You have to compose the shot where the face is far away from the camera, that's why we get these crazy composed shots of legs and arms with their heads/faces almost always on the background.

I have had to unfollow so many accounts that I tried to use as motivation or inspiration because I've realized almost every single photo has been altered. Most use some sort of "bubble lens" on it to make the models bum bigger and waist smaller (or straight up BBLS that they are trying to pass off as "hard work" or results from a training regime they're promoting). Its honestly very toxic when it comes to a community that's based on pure and healthy morals that are being corrupted with a ton of fakeness (especially when it comes to standing out so you can promote products). I know my approach won't work for everyone, but IMO folks should go to a nude beach at least once. It will remind you of what real bodies look like and show that we all more or less have the same collections of "flaws." Also skinny dipping in the ocean is instant dopamine. :)

    Thank you for talking about this!! In photography, it can be fun to play with distortion for artistic reasons. BUT it’s also so important imo to take photos without it too. Because of the things you talked about here. I actually love taking photos on my lens that doesn’t use distortion, because I get a much more realistic view of mine and others bodies. It helps with a more full acceptance, of things like having short (or just average length) legs.
    Anyway, even as a photographer, and knowing about lens distortion, I still fall prey to comparison. It’s SO helpful to see the celebrity photos without it, so thank you again for talking about this!!

      There isn't one beauty standard here... everything is trendy at different times. Thin lips were and will be 'in' again. Small butts were in during the 90s. I remember a line from True Lies (1994) where Jamie Lee Curtis' character is described as having the butt of an 8-year-old boy - and it's meant as a compliment. Don't fall prey to random whims. Rock what you've got. ☺

      The most beautiful women I know have thin lips. I personally think that what you naturally have, usually, almost always, looks better on you than whatever trend is happening. Some women look great with their naturally bigger lips. A whole lot of girls look bizarre and weird with lip fillers. It ends up being unnatural and not really better-looking.
      Don't be insecure about it! 😘 No reason to change it for a trend that'll pass soon.

    Disclaimer: I am not intending to sound rude, or like a know it all..in my statements. Do not be harsh, or vulgar towards me, if you disagree. Let's just have a conversation and talk like adults, if so.
    honestly just think it's a matter of fun, and photography being mixed in most of these images. If someone/people become impacted by the distortion of the photography style, that is obviously sad and hard (not fun)...but most of the times photographers and models alike try making the images you're looking at: fun, fresh, new, odd, and interesting...overall. i think it is a bit of a stretch to say that a person can be completely fooled by these angles like (the shoes or hands looking big) because of the forced perspective. That is why "forced perspective" was invented. I digress, Hollywood can be a very toxic place to go..if you are looking for body positivity in some aspects..and that needs to change...but I wouldn't say all things in Hollywood or photography/art/self expression are negatives.
    Yes, some people try and pose in more "flattering ways" for photos and videos..but ultimately..if they feel happy that way, it would be up to them to keep or change that habit (not for a stranger to force them into changing it). Some people love enhancing their features with makeup, others go lighter with it. Its preference, personal preference. Not everything is meant to become some conspiracy, or controversy. I do agree that people should practice self love/body love and perhaps think about why they're doing things a specific way (and if those things are done fir themselvesor for other people)...but we can't force someone to pose face on , if they're struggling with a giant zit and don't feel comfortable showing it ( in a permanent image for socials). Life is a grey area, and somethings aren't meant to be harmful. This topic is meant to be put up for everyone's individual interpretation..along with the comment/paragraph I wrote. This is merely my opinion as a human person.

It was nuts!

    THANK YOU. I REALLY needed this, especially the Dua Lipa one. I always had a naturally thick muscular body and really suffered growing up under the 00's standards. I developed anorexia, bulimia and body dysmorphia trying to have a tinny waist and thin legs. I became underweight, had thin legs, flat abdomen, but I never achieved a 60cm waist. I felt so frustated when I realized that I'll never achieve my body goals due to my bone structure. Ellipsis, the recovery was LONG. My point is, one of the things that helped me a lot to finally feel good about my body was the beginning of Dua Lipa's career. It was a JOY to see a big, muscular, non-fat-but-wide-waist woman be considered hot and beautiful by everyone. But then she started "getting" thinner and thinner, and I thought: "so... she lost weight and she actually looks like this now that she's super skinny? So she wasn't just big? So she was fat? So I'm not big, I'm fat. Well, if she could, I could too, I just need to strict diet and do more cardio, I-". That last line instantly made me felt nauseous, clearly my body hated the idea but my mind was ruthless, so I reduced Dua Lipa's content on my feed for my own good. That was like 3 years ago, now that I watch this video, I realize that I almost fell into the abyss again just because of the distorted photos of someone who actually has a bigger waist than me🤯I feel so stupid rn but also very proud that it didn't make me fall into eating disorders again 🤦‍♀😂

    I find the history of beauty standards to be super fascinating. Being older, I grew up before social media. Since I was tall, skinny,long legged, toned, light skinned, blue eyes, and light haired, I fit most 80s-90s beauty standards... and then came Pam Anderson and such... I was told for 20 years how perfect I'd be IF I had a boob job. 😑
    The pressure of beauty standards existed long before photography even existed. Victorian women had to hide their cosmetics they used to enhance their looks because of basically unreal beauty standards at the time.
    Unrealistic standards have been around many millennia and its a fascinating subject to delve into. Love ya guts!! 😊
